There are at least 2 types of effective time travel in the movie. 1) Nebula's uplink latency. There would be no boss-fight in the end if Nebula couldn't send information faster than light. Tony uses the same type of time travel for a few times in the MCU, his relative speed towards carrier networks (for example on a launching space ship) wouldn't allow the calls he makes. 2) The writer's ego type of time travel. When you've written your story into a corner, but your ego lets you assume that you and your work are just too good to start over again. It's a kind of hybris and a common thing among artists, not their fault. It's the publisher/studio's fault to accept it. Could it be done without? Sure.
