anyone here fans of Bollywood cinema?

Despite Bollywood having become one of the biggest film industries around the globe since the turn of the millennium, it seems like it's still largely seen as a laughing stock in most other parts of the world. More than any other nation perhaps, Bollywood films seem to have become memed and ridiculed most on the Internet. I myself, have yet to meet any fellow movie buffs who seem particularly fond of Indian films. The only other type of film that comes close to being mocked as much, is Ugandan cinema, but even that's seen in a more respectful light as people tend to be much more sympathetic to the technical and budgetary limitations Ugandan filmmakers have to deal with (for obvious reasons).

Perhaps I'm just uncultured and xenophobic, but I have never actually given Indian cinema much of a chance because of this. I'm usually pretty open when it comes to checking out foreign films, but Indian films have never interested me as a result of their reputation (corny musicals, shameless Hollywood rip offs, and ridiculously over-the-top action scenes that defy any and all logic). Is anyone here a fan of it, though? I'm assuming the vast majority of us here didn't grow up in India, right?

Any thoughts?

I like elephants, but the musical breaks are not my thing.

99% of Bollywood is absolute crap. They just churn out as many movies as possible that follow pretty much the same formula. Most of them are way too long and if the music's no good, then the movie just doesn't work. That said, I've enjoyed quite a few Bollywood movies. A couple of them are among my favourite movies of all time.

Yeah, I suppose the same could be said about virtually every other film industry across the globe. Japan and Korea are definitely the two places to look out for as far as world cinema is concerned from Asia, though. I've heard the Thais make some decent stuff too. Hong Kong cinema used to be great during the 80's and 90's, but ever since it fell in the hands of the CCP, it's been nothing but a constant shit show since.

Bollywood films I recommended as the mystery film in Stonekeeper's movie guessing game are listed below. None of these films had the usual musical and dancing elements. They were all thrillers involving crime or infidelity. Bollywood can be good at these (unless it involves the superhuman good guy, who destroys 10 bad guys in a fight that defies the laws of physics):

Blackmail (2018), (Indian)

Andhadhun (2018), (Indian)

Badla (2019), (Indian) Hindi – mystery, remake of film from Spain, The Invisible Guest (2016), which is available on Netflix.

I do like a lot of Bollywood films. Some are historical which are good or bad. The ones with the songs and group dancing can be okay.

Mystery and Crime are fun, thanks for the titles👍
And YES, the superhuman cop ones are pretty ridiculous unless you want a good laugh with pals

As you say, a large number of countries make really good movies but India is hard to take seriously
