Completely agree, it may not have been the best but this was solidly in the middle and nowhere near the worst Marvel movie.
Thor: Love & Thunder came out in July 2022 and that was when I threw in the towel. It was a DISGRACE given the talent. In the SEVEN movies since then i would say that only GoG3 and Deadpool3 were arguably better. To the people saying this is the worst movie -- are we to believe the Marvels was better?
Also, this is the first time I felt any hope that they were returning to the days when they had some sort of a grand plan.
This is why we can't have nice things. Even here many people are just looking for a fight by turning everything political or looking to spar on the wokeness of movies. Even legitimate disagreements are often laced with personal insults... why? Such encounters are rare in real life.
But once in a while I stumble on to good discussions. I wonder if the trolls are a vocal minority, or if this is a true reflection of society as it stands today.
I also got it. More impressed though that you started a whole post just for the joke.
More than tone to me the most important thing is that whatever rules you establish for the character's power, they should be consistently followed. Also everyone else should act logically and respond realistically to the laws of nature.
When aliens or magic is involved I guess anything is possible, but if you have wings made of feathers it irks me that you can fly without flapping them as shown in many versions of Hawkman.
The She-Hulk and Kraven origins in the recent series/movie make that seem like a documentary. They didn't even try to make those remotely plausible.
Superman/Batman/Green Lantern/Flash are not so hard to go along with, I manage to suspend disbelief and roll with it with limited effort.
However when you get into Hawkgirl/man and even Mr. Terrific, that's when my brain starts asking too many questions and the spell is broken. But I suppose its all equally outlandish.
Judging from the number of things in quotes in the original post.. yes I realize expecting realism is a losing battle. However there are levels to suspending disbelief, and I am beginning to get the sense that the studios are beginning to steer to a much younger demographic and more frivolous story lines instead of exploring serious themes. Perhaps it is time to grow up and move on as some have said. However genre such as fantasy and sci-fi have managed to pull this off and endure - no one says these are just for kids.
EXACTLY!! If I saw myself, the first thing I would think is that is my new best friend. I would go out of my way to cooperate.
But I think this is the point. The original characters were bad people, and there first instinct was to harm the others, and assume the worst. This may not have been true for their counterparts in the other realities. There was a line, "what if we are the evil ones".
Clearly standards and expectations, especially for how women were treated, were different back then than they are now. Also somewhat unfair to judge someone based on the standards of a different time, even though in this case the behavior may have been wrong even for then.
All that notwithstanding, we have progressed to a point where I would say any sort of physical or verbal abuse is unprofessional and cause for a studio to fire a director. If you can't get the performance that you need, it means you should hire a different actor. However artists are complicated, some find inspiration in and even embrace suffering for their craft.
Separately, stuntmen habitually suffer injuries or even death in movies; why is that acceptable? I supposed as a minimum we should establish that everyone should have the freedom to quit at any time without retaliation, and build from there.
Looking at the replies it saddens me how people are no longer able to separate these ideas from government involvement. Of course once that enters the picture people retreat to their corners and discussion comes to a screeching halt.
To me this is about art, fairnness and historical accuracy. At the rate we are going nothing will remain as something than can be discussed independently on its own merit.
To some extent this is true, nothing new under the sun. The enduring themes and struggles we experience as humans are always the same. But exploring a theme from a different angle is still different than remaking a previous movie beat for beat just with other actors.
I completely agree HOWEVER... if you have this complaint you should have the same energy when it comes to the Equalizer movies. Sixty year olds beating down twenty year olds is standard these days whether it is Stallone, Cruise, or Liam Neeson or Denzel is just a part of Hollywood.
While it is ridiculous I am at peace with it because I would prefer a bankable movie star in the role, instead of some no name twenty year old.
Right... but what about all the soldiers, guards and other staff on the arena floor? In other fights some of these people would carry off the dead. In this case no one even glanced at him as he bled out. You would think at least the nephew would be somewhat conflicted.
He is completely forgotten as the scene goes on -- it seemed a bit weird to me.
Definitely: Amazing Stories, Tales from the Darkside, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, X-Files and most recently Black Mirror all have some amazing episodes that would really make you think. You just have to dig through them to find the gems.
That banned x-files episode, "Home" really did a number on me, just like the mutated bear in Annihilation. I still think about both of these a lot.
I am a huge fan of action however what fascinates me most in these types of movies is more so an original premise. Preferably something somewhat twisted - almost bordering on horror though not gore (EXistenZ pushed it for me). Something more cerebral that makes you think, with action just being a supporting factor. For example they way they demonstrated relative time in Interstellar, or some of the explorations of human consciousness in the Black Mirror episodes, have been really fascinating to me. I agree that Eternal Sunshine was amazing in this respect.
Anything executed well (following its own rules) that has either a wholly original idea, creature design, or even never seen-before visuals ( Abyss, Stargate, Edge of Tomorrow are a few examples) . The recent Dune probably also fits the bill (the world building I thought was amazing). Don't mind smaller movies either like "The Man from Earth" which was essentially just exposition.
Thanks for the list... will check out the ones I haven't seen.
The point I was trying to make is assuming technology marches on you wouldn't be exactly back where you started after a few decades. The population might be back to the same level but there would be significantly more resources to go around due to ongoing advances in agriculture etc.
But again no need to even get on this train because ecosystems are in balance and they naturally take care of population control with no need for an external influence.
Keep in mind that while the population has grown so have resources in a way. Technically resources are finite, but technology has a way of increasing how much we can access - this is termed total factor productivity in economics. We have gone from every family having to farm to eat, to a world where less than 2% of the population feeds everyone else.
Absolutely. Endgame is okay the first time, but once you know the story it takes FOREVER to get going. Infinity war has action scenes from the beginning.
Thank you for this. My issue was that from what we had seen of the alien, that grenade should not have had any appreciable impact on it - let alone caused its destruction. But the idea that it was now partially also Nathalie committing suicide would explain how it could allow itself to die.
From the video it seemed that the husband had achieved a cordial symbiotic relationship with the alien, their conversation didn't seem contentious at all. More like they had realized they were changing and started cooperating for the best outcome given the circumstances. This type of surrender made more sense to me and I think it would have been more impactful than the fight it had with Nathalie.
Finally, you give Hollywood too much credit. The flickering eyes was not inconsequential, that was most definitely sequel baiting. Who knows what was in their genes, their offspring could have constituted some sort of alien invasion from within.
