The CW's Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow's cancelations are a major loss of LGBTQ+ representation for network TV

https://www.themarysue.com/queer-representation-takes-a-hit-as-the-cw-cancels-legends-of-tomorrow-batwoman/

"The cancellation of both series dramatically decreases the representation of queer women, and queer women of color especially, on the network," says Chelsea Steiner. "And it leaves so much unresolved, as both series ended on cliffhangers. There’s a chance we may see these characters pop up in other Arrowverse shows or crossover events, but it’s a bitter pill to lose such impactful series. Ultimately, these cancellations may be due to higher up decisions at WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS, which are currently trying to sell the CW. Depending on the outcome of the potential sale, many more series could wind up on the chopping block."

I'm amazed they let it keep on going, even though the show was garbage in just the first season!

reply

Ruby Rose has the charisma of a bowl of oatmeal. The black actress they brought in to replace her was even duller.

reply

Small wonder CW finally went under and had to be sold. Sad part is, their crappy writers went to other studios and are spreading their crap writing there!

reply

Yeah but all writers are crap now every show has some Woke in it, CW was the worst. Characters making speeches and even wearing clothing with political slogans. They aren't even trying to be subtle.

reply

It's because Hollyweird made a very self-destructive move by driving off the older, more talented writers and only bringing in a bunch of kids straight out of writing school (most notably graduates from filming schools right there in L.A. and other CA universities) who have no experience in writing at all, are not creative, have never been outside of CA and had real experiences in the real world, and only have movies/tv shows they grew up on for inspiration. Small wonder the writing has gotten so bad in film these days.

reply

They don't seem to pay these people well either, another writers strike now which is no big deal but the one that probably did damage was in the 2000's before it went totally to shit.

reply

I remember that strike in '07. Two shows we loved to watch died as a result: "The Unit," and "Vegas." Word on the street is that this strike isn't gonna have an outcome that favors the writers like it did in the mid-2000s, because now we have streaming and access to foreign entertainment, in addition to AI writing scripts.

reply

Entertainment now is spread so thin over so many different platforms I am surprised shows have as many viewers as they are getting.

Although it could be argued that writing is a trade which requires skill and training I would argue that it's not noticeable given the crap that gets pumped out. A lot of it to me seems like niche groups writing stuff that appeals to their own tastes and clique as well as spewing out as much Woke propaganda as possible.

I never watched The Unit but I did see some eps of Vegas and it was politics free, not even a story on racism. Nothing. Awesome!

reply

Yeah, now that people don't have to watch cable tv or satellite, they can watch from a huge variety of streaming services, and now you don't have a large portion of America watching any one tv show. That, and the idiots in Hollyweird have been getting their info on what to show on tv using social media and little else, which I find incredibly stupid, considering how small a portion of Americans actually use social media anymore.

There was a study done recently, using volunteers from around America watching test footage of tv shows, that revealed that the idiots in Tinseltown are mad that most people outside their bubble don't actually like the things they do, nor do they have the same values, and this pissed them off to the point that they cooked the books on their own study of what people like on tv, and only used samples from people in CA watching. That's one of many things that led to them making tv shows and movies about stuff they like, but not what the majority of tv watchers in America (or anywhere else) like at all, which has also led to low numbers of people watching their crap.

People have shown worries about using AI to write movie/tv scripts, but after what I've seen the "humans" in Hollyweird write in the past 7 years, a machine could only improve it.

And yeah, we loved "Vegas," particularly when it had really funny episodes. You can understand why we were very sad when it fell apart after the '07 writer's strike.

The Unit was about a group of elite soldiers that went on classified missions around the world (mostly the Middle East because of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars), and covered both their adventures and the lives of their wives and families at home. Like Vegas, it got really stupid after the good writers left and the show died a short time after.

I still get more enjoyment out of watching old films and TV shows rather than anything current. You couldn't even play a Woke drinking game anymore because if you had to take a shot of booze for every Woke reference you would die of alcohol poisoning before the episode finished.

Everything comes to a head sooner or later though. They do fudge their ratings and popularity levels but as Margaret Thatcher once remarked "Socialism is great until you run out of other people's money". The biggest film of recent times was Top Gun 2 Maverick a rather unWoke film that even wasn't that great to be honest but it was fun to watch. It was just entertainment and unashamedly so.

How many other potential blockbusters have failed in the last few years, the last Terminator film, Charlie's Angels (2019), Ghostbusters (2016) all flopped and all very Woke.

I think most TV shows get stupid after about season 3. I like what the Brits do and run a show for a few seasons and then end it. America likes to run shows into the ground.

xD ROFL!!! I'm sorry, I'm laughing over that one, because it's true!

I have a feeling I know what's gonna happen, whether it be 3 years from now, tomorrow, or 10 years from now. Someone with money is gonna get sick and tired of Hollyweird's BS and start up their own studios somewhere far away from CA, but still in the States. They're gonna take all the people who were talented and driven out of the original Hollyweird, make their own advertising agencies, their own rating system, and their own movie chains; and they're gonna make movies with all the elements the woke crowd hates. They'll get embarrassingly rich off of such films, and Hollywood's gonna be pissed off, broke, and left in the dust because nobody will watch their shit anymore.

reply

I think so too. There is such a huge market to tap into that just wants entertainment not propaganda. There are also so many great stories that just won't be heard at the moment because it will upset the precious ones.

I keep thinking a great story would be about a business man and ex reality TV show host who is tired of the way his country is governed so he runs for President and ends up beating a seasoned politician. Tell me that isn't a Frank Capra theme? I could see Jimmy Stewart playing the role of the ex reality Tv show host.

Glad you liked the drinking game joke too. I used to think it would be fun but just too dangerous!

reply

I concur with both of these assessments.

Good riddance to transgressive garbage shows.

reply

YES...no more heshes

reply

ratings are poor , superhero shows cost more than dumb teen soap for the net

reply

Oh please, you cannot watch a TV show anymore without seeing some element from the Alphabet gang. Every show incorporates it.

reply

But these ones were special! Rainbow outfits and stuff!

reply

In 1957 there actually was a story called 'The Rainbow Batman'!

That conversation doesn't appear Gay at all...

reply

What's gay about rainbows?
Besides, I'm fluid and identify as titanic - so not gay per se.

reply

I meant the conversation between Batman and Robin on the cover if that makes any difference. Unless your remark was sarcasm in which case, well done.

reply

Batwoman was utter crap from the start. Ruby Rose looked the part (comic accurate) in costume but that's all.

reply

It seemed to lack direction I agree. As someone who doesn't follow comic books the name Batwoman to me always felt like a made up Feminist stance kind of like "Batgirl is sexist, she's a Batwoman not a girl!" I was surprised to learn that Batwoman really is or was a comic book.

reply

You're not alone. She's never had as high a profile as Batgirl for non comics readers. She was originally a Silver Age character (Kathy Kane), first appearing in 1956. Eventually she retired from crime fighting and ran a circus (as you do) until she was murdered. And that was pretty much it until the character was reintroduced in 2006 following DC's reboot Infinite Crisis, (as Kate Kane). This time she was portrayed as gay and has been ever since. She's featured in a couple of DC animated movies.

The 'Ryan Wilder' version that Javicia Leslie played was created for the show.

reply

I do love how these characters have a life history, retiring from crime fighting to run a circus! Now that is a show or film I would watch!

reply

Haha! Yes!

reply

"And it leaves so much unresolved, as both series ended on cliffhangers."

Here let me resolve it for you. It would have ended with Bad acting, terrible writing, horrible casting and extremely cringy scenes of Batwoman throwing her fist in the air and screaming LGBTQ GIRL POWER!!!! as she beats everybody up. This show had zero impact and should deservedly be forgotten. It still boggles my mind that it made it past the embarrassing cringy trailer let alone the horrible pilot.

reply

lol yep.

reply

I literally LOL'd at this comment because I know it's probably the truth. I don't mind LGBTQ in shows, but it's become overdone to the point where it's not even realistic anymore. Of course, this was a CW superhero show, so no one tuned in for the realism, but these whiners don't do anything but whine about how they're not represented, and then when they are, they don't even watch the show. Oh, wait. They're only like 2% of the population, so it's kind of stupid to cater to them instead of comic books and superhero fans anyway.

I actually enjoyed this show. I've not gotten past season 1 yet, but I'm watching it on MAX right now. It's not the best in the Arrowverse (The Flash is my favorite), but it's fine for what it is...

reply

Arrow and the Flash were the best ones. Although both shows went down hill when the CW really started pushing their identity politics agenda. I felt like they got back on track with Superman and Lois but season 3 of that was horrible.

reply

So just make a new and fresh LGBTQ show. Batwoman was never successful and Legends of Tomorrow ran for 7 seasons.
