I was in my mid 20s when this came out and I definitely appreciated the 'passage of time' aspect of the story. It totally resonated with me, but then again, I've been told I'm beyond my years many times.
I don't hate the entertainment industry for being a bunch of criminals as much as I hate the entertainment industry for being a bunch of criminals who claim to be the textbook definition of positivity and open-mindedness.
Screw that, Norm MacDonald was the real hero of this movie.
I'm in the opposite boat. Missed it in the theater because I was only 16. But I now have a 3D TV and the 3D blu and it's really enjoyable!
Part 4s that I like, personally are:
Scream 4
American Reunion
Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter
jackass number two
jackass 3D
jackass forever
jackass the movie
It pains me to rank the first one last, because that movie was so iconic and perfectly captures the spirit of 2002. It's just not as entertaining as what came later.
I disagree with the reviewers' sentiment that Haneke is being contradictory with Funny Games. He says that Funny Games is the exact same type of unsettling torture that the director is trying to take a stand against. Funny Games has a legitimately saddening and sickening effect on the viewer. The stereotypical Hollywood slasher/torture movie just makes you shake your head and wonder what's wrong with whoever wrote it. But when we watch Funny Games we think "This is terrible. This could and does really happen to people."
I don't think this movie is as awful as most people say. Having said that, it definitely still has its problems. My biggest complaint was turning Godzilla into a giant iguana. I always felt like the character worked best as an unexplained phenomenon. Basically a Japanese folk legend that turns out to be real.
Saw this in the theater twice because I just had to soak it all in a second time. Hopefully the sequel comes close to the atmosphere the first one created
I agree, it is pretty satisfying to watch this around Christmas time.
The movie is so much better when you truly appreciate what it's doing and who it's making fun of. I've always loved movies that use big Hollywood dollars to shit on Hollywood. Popstar and Scream 3 are two other great examples.
Saw it in the theater in 2002 and from the moment the movie started, I was heavily invested. I was only 8 years old, so I clearly didn't understand any of the analogy or references. I think first and foremost, the animation-style fascinated me. It's the same reason I instantly fell in love with Dragon Ball Z a few years earlier. It just looked really cool. The story was great, and easy enough to follow, plus the voice acting was pretty solid. Knowing how much Japanese folklore is explored in the movie is just icing on the cake nowadays.
How in the world did George Lucas let them buy Star Wars without having at least some sort of stipulation that they make the sequels his way?? This is George Lucas we're talking about! The guy has always been notoriously protective of his franchise! Did Disney put a gun to his head and make him sign it over by force? (no pun intended)
I like this one a lot as well. Never understood why so many hate on it. However, I've always thought Full Metal Jacket was the most accessible Kubrick film.
I agree that GvK is garbage. I saw Godzilla Minus One yesterday and it makes me so angry that $200 million was spent on this piece of crap, when Toho made a movie 100x better for a 1/10th of the cost.
Yeah, as far as I know, there is no dub of this. At least not playing in theaters anyway.
Godzilla <spoiler>fights no other Kaiju. It's a solo Godzilla movie.</spoiler>
And it's perfect. I left the theater in tears.
This is precisely what I take it to mean as well
The new 'trilogy' was ruined with Scream 5. These new movies have nothing on the original 4.

Saw III
Saw II
Saw X
Saw VI
Jigsaw
Saw IV
Saw 3D
