I would say a lot has changed: - fake scripted REALITY TV has become the modern "Freak Show" that was banned in the past as entertainment - "Documentaries" have become CINEMA ENTERTAINMENT. weird, but ok - EVERYONE thinks they are arm chair directors/writers/critics when that used to be relegated only to chosen specialists who thought a lot about what they would say before committing to printed paper or magazine [IE higher quality reports verses the everyman idiot yelling as loud as possible] - demarcation of quality thanks to low camera prices, and youtube availability - proliferation of streaming services leading to a fight over content/eye views and a rush of quantity over quality - reduction of peoples attention spans much of this has permanently altered the landscape of the quality movie going experience where it is harder to even find GOOD films to see. shock and awe and CGI are the name of the game now, and the experience of enjoying films has been numbed by the silly over the top action. CGI removed "movie magic" and its just boring Yes, there were 1 sided critics that may or may not know anything, but now, the noise of it all detracts from our experience. Things do change, for the worse, unfortunately, sometimes. other movies I learned nothing from but enjoyed: TENET, Cypher, The Matrix, Twister, Ford V Ferrari etc etc I know! Let's have a deep, theoretic discussion about the art modern dissective conversationing utilizing the most modern snowflaked verbiage buzzwords found like post shifting, straw manning, gas lighting, mansplaining, capping, basing, shaft blathing, ermagazing, sniggle wiggling, fausta-plowming, and maybe we can forget the initial idea of the OP altogether. You win. I am not match for your wits. I hope day I can ascend to dissecting discussions like so well in my future. :) But, probably won't bother. (PS I didn't bother reading your post, since YOU started things with condecension of "another one that doesn't get it". not worth my time) we also live in a time where anyone can make up anything they want to believe out of anything on screen. "Did you see that actor dude in movie X wearing a dark green sweater?? That means he was part of the anti-nuke clan of podunk townville, trying to defile industrial progress!! Prove me wrong!" People make up fan theories out of nothing, NOTHING, that could fit, or rewrite everything based on what they want to see.... ....instead of simply enjoying it like it is: an entertaining movie. Raiders of the lost Ark: - about a cult of people that wear hats - about showing undernourished peoples in 3rd world country we should be helping - an ad for S&M promoting whip use in public instead of private - an anti-air flight agenda showing how easily planes can explode from gasoline - story about a peodophile "I was a child!" "You knew what you were doing" - a male gaze, mansplained movie rescuing the "helpless female" and on and on and on - one can make up anything about anything. why not just let the movies be what they are. Rock on! I still enjoy them too. I wish more were aiming at the high bar of ENTERTAINMENT over social message I feel like many woke films end up tanking most of the time anyway, so maybe a rebalance is coming? I just watched TOMORROW WAR, and once I let go of all the analysis of film, it was a pretty decent just entertainment film, I learned nothing from, and just some interesting stuff happened to a guy for a film plot. It wasn't great or game changing, just well done entertainment in the genre that it is in. Sure, it's been there, but my example is "Raiders of the lost ark" style films, where they are fun and very entertaining without all the social whatevers great reply! I agree. I guess I was hoping a movie forum was more like, "Hey wasn't it cool when the lead did THIS or THAT cool thing? Yeah that was neat. Or this part was GREAT" instead of "That actor supported pizzagate and doesnt deserve our money or to ever work again!" junk. yeah, I could prattle off a long list of popular movies that I like, and did really well at box office: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Inception, Contact, Tenet, etc etc - that I didn't LEARN anything from, was not preached to, had no deep message about life - maybe that's why I like Sci-Fi, because it is unrealistic, and does a lot of interesting (to me) "What if...." stuff. RAIDERS is probably my prime example: The lead guy had some character and personality, did a bunch of stuff it was fun to follow along, and I am never preached to about anything, no statements about society, no lesson to be learned at the end, just a decent guy resolving an action conflict. I think I understand what you are saying, and get it, but there is a point in which "SOCIETY" has to put a foot down and reline things up. And if your choice doesn't fit, they will take it out on you. It's sort of the reason for laws: keep everyone on the same page. You say, "I don't like not being able to randomly kill people..." And you do it, the majority of people will step up and take you down. Laws are supposed to let those policey people do it, but if laws or police didn't exist, the town's people would group up and take you out. Physically. Or, I don't get it at all - which means ignore my words :) There was a guy, 25 years ago, who predicted all of this and wrote it all out with scary accuracy. He's attempts to stop it were not with in the law, though. if I understand you correctly, I don't like what you are saying here. ;) naw, totally kidding. I feel there are many reasons people don't using "I don't like it" as an argument, first and foremost, because it proves nothing. Maybe I am not reading your question right? I DO agree that the "agree to disagree" should exist a LOT more these days. Feels like all the "more tolerance" thing isn't actually working. There's tons of stuff in life I PERSONALLY do not agree with, and voice my OPINION over it, but I do not force others to agree with my perspective, nor try to prove my way is the best way. Unless it is a provable physics type of thing, there is nothing to prove someone's feelings right or wrong. That's a senseless argument. THAT SAID, we should all be tolerant to allow others to think differently than us, and them allow us to, as long as no one is getting injured, and no laws are being broken. Just my take. The only justice some care about is the social warrior kind, which precludes fairness, actual justice, logic, and facts. you are right. there are so many things ladies will never admit publically, OR even to themselves. (ima guy) welp, I'm a white male, and enjoyed Tomorrow War for the empty headed, action, summer popcorn movie that it was. I didn't relate to the character, although I enjoy the lead actor. Was it because we are white males? I don't even care to think about that. I never think about that. What attracted me was empty headed, action, summer, popcorn, blockbuster, space aliens, splosions movie. That's all. They could have had a female in the lead, and if her acting was fine, I would have enjoyed it equally. I don't care, as long as it entertains. Linerearly, I really enjoyed the first wonder woman film - directed by a woman, but not all wokey about it. expected the WW84 to be equally as good, it was horrid and I looked into why: written produced and directed by the same woman. Only people I know who thought it was amazing, were some woke feminist who tell me I just didn't understand what it was saying. Really??? It was supposed to say all this woke stuff (according to them) and is totally amazing to them. Yet, it was roundly slammed in nearly all review sites. That is because "mansplaining" and "the patriachy" and some shit. Then, how do they explain the first movie getting way better reivews? And it was a way better movie. Woke wastes our time. I'm fine with people liking it, I just didn't. I worked hard to avoid the BS seen here - on purpose. If you can work to live a good life, do so. Having a bunch of personal drama issues and bad relationships does not make life NOT DULL, it makes life annoying and bothersome. My soap opera like personal life is more a high action comedy, with some minor bumps, which is why I don't relate to this film. But my ride has been far from dull. hahahaha far from it budget: $61 million worldwide box office: $242 million MATH! yeah But they try to be SOOOO serious! Big, personal drama issues, and angriness over this and that, and serious discussions, (with some very small humor).... if it's just a FUN movie, shouldn't it be more fun, less "We are a dead serious movie, in the vein of serious James Bond style" -- instead of the cartoony physics and actions? I just can't stomach this much cartoony crap anymore. Hobbs Shaw was it for me: helicopters falling off a high cliff, exploding and disintegrating at the bottom... and the occupants get up and walk away. Good grief. Done. (actually the whole film. I would have shut it off, but I wanted to finally see the level of ludicrous absurdity things have come too. Now, how do you top insane, shark jumping over the topness??)
