can we ever return to simply enjoying movies?

Thanks to the internet stupor highway, we can all jump in with our perspectives and shred every movie ever made for having plot holes, science and physics issues, social/racial/religious offenses, political/social agends....

Every movie ever made, and that will be made from the future, will always have these issues.

There used to be a time when you watched a movie and simply enjoyed it, as is, for the fun of it. There was not some deep message about life to be learned, just some cool stuff happened to fictional people, over a two hour ride we went along with.

Can we ever get back to that? Or is this dissection of all writing, and hidden meanings all we'll get from here on out?

OH! This means THAT political agenda, or this groups female male bashing gay trans whatever pushing.... what happened to fun, fictional plots for entertainment?

Rofl. Yeah sure, there was nothing like this whatsoever in movies from decades past. Social commentary has been a part of film literally since it began. As has politics of all sorts.

reply

Sure, it's been there, but my example is "Raiders of the lost ark" style films, where they are fun and very entertaining without all the social whatevers

The John Wick trilogy was popcorn territory.

reply

Totally agree with you. We will never have this again i fear 😔

I just watched TOMORROW WAR, and once I let go of all the analysis of film, it was a pretty decent just entertainment film, I learned nothing from, and just some interesting stuff happened to a guy for a film plot. It wasn't great or game changing, just well done entertainment in the genre that it is in.

reply

Of course. I rewatched The Cabin In The Woods recently and was reminded that modern films can still be great… when they’re not just Trojan Horses for woke dogma.

We can return to that by boycotting anything woke.

reply

I feel like many woke films end up tanking most of the time anyway, so maybe a rebalance is coming?

reply

You’d hope so. It’s just weird that the market hasn’t corrected itself already - I suspect because Hollywood figures are all in the woke cult, even at he highest levels. Or it’s possible that they see the threat of cancellation as even worse than bombing financially.

I NEVER STOPPED...PHYSICAL MEDIA AND A FIRM GRASP OF WHAT I LIKE HAVE KEPT ME ENJOYING FILMS FOR THE LAST 35 YEARS....35 YEARS MORE IF I'M LUCKY.

reply

Rock on! I still enjoy them too. I wish more were aiming at the high bar of ENTERTAINMENT over social message

reply

I think so if the film is well made. There are plenty of new shows and films that I enjoy. I think if you are interested in seeing something that you should steer away from the net about that film/show prior to viewing to avoid spoilers or opinions on it.

reply

I only enjoy movies that have a social message. Preferably one where white people are portrayed as evil racists and black people the most peaceful dignified people who ever lived! And all members of the LGBTQ are courageous heroes of delicate beauty.

reply

Honestly, the one thing I hate nowadays is you mostly can't rate a film as "Just ok" anymore.

It either has to be the best thing ever or garbage. There's no middle ground. Thanks, internet. lol

I find myself being more critical of the movies that I enjoyed as a kid.

I can still watch them and enjoy them but the flaws are really obvious to me now.

Some are just unwatchable. I recently watched "Take this job and shove it" and "Gorp" - two movies that I loved as a kid. I couldn't make it through either one because they were so stupid.
