I get what you are saying, but I see us stopped at the "Pain" part. If you or I drop a hammer on our foot accidently, mash some nerves (maybe not actually damage anything), we register that as "Pain" and we cry out, and grab our foot. That is a lesson learned to us: this causes that pain to learn to not do it again. So, we can tell a machine "This is pain" and how to react to it... say it drops a hammer on its metal foot - it could be programmed to cry out, imitating OUR pain, but it doesn't feel the "searing HURT" that we get that identifies as pain. It just has a new dent that it must now deal with by repairing or replacing. I may have just answered my question: maybe PAIN is simply a non-existent thing in the AI world. I mean, is there any real reason for it, beyond self preservation responses to outside actions that would normally cause pain to you or I? Inanimate things can never "feel" pain, ergo, will never be alive or sentient. and now I've said too much ahahhahahaa one needs to understand the reality of gay love that is overlooked or maybe has altered our reality of love as of late. one can define LOVE as a nice feeling or wanting to be near someone, and or also physical (which means SEXUAL) attraction to someone. one can deeply love people of the same sex. In fact, I truly do deeply love my brother, my father and most of my male friends. the only thing that separates that from gay love is the sex part. yes, I'm dumbing this all down to the very basics, but that is truly it. the only part that defines it as truly gay - or even strait for that matter - is the sex of it. I've never seen one straight romance movie that left sex out. maybe it is not shown, but I dont recall one ever where sex was not expected or insinuated. same will go for gays movies as well. be it kissing, petting, sex, whatever, that is the end game. i've seen movies where they end up as friends only, and guess what? that makes it NOT a romance movie. because that part of gay life repulses me, I will never seek out gay entertainment. and that's not going to change, nor should it. I dont have to accept things I dont like in my world... AS LONG AS I am not defeating others over it, or trying to block them from whatever they like. "Not that there's anything wrong with it" - Jerry Seinfeld I also can not stand the taste of green beans in my mouth. That will never change, and it doesn't have to. gay cinema belongs in mainstream as much as mainstream belongs in niche gay cinema: it doesn't, doesn't have to, and makes no difference. :) honestly, I do not speak for any majority of straight people, but all the ones I do know pretty much feel this way. I like it. but it is still just a number. it is HOT to us, but what would a computer care? how can we be sure when a computer sees that high, hot number, it FEELS a "pain" and not just a code: \\if TEMP > 80c, then action is - yelp sound/retract/feel "pain" in that location(nebulous) essentially, your first two sentences are, indeed, correct. this is based on reality of actions, not what people might care to think is best. Have you lived here on Earth very long? you mean we CAN'T blame the caveman culture for steering us into a society of violence? we should cancel them and get restitutions from their families now! I'm still not convinced programs we create that tell us they are self aware, really are, or just designed to act like it. thus my pain/pleasure paradox: can we just create similar reactions, and not real pain pleasure? I would like to argue that organic things like amoebas are also alive without knowing it, but that's a discussion for elsewhere I think. :) nope. why? myself and many straights have zero interest in it. why? because it does not interest us. why? why should it? I'm straight. Aren't you tolerant? that has zero to do with it. yes I tolerate gay just fine, but I don't choose to be entertained by it. people butt fucking is not of my interest, and actually, it repulses me a lot. I am tolerant because I say "go do whatever you like" behind your closed doors - same for straight people fucking: keep it to yourself. That said, make as many gay movies as you want, I will NEVER stand in your way. but don't expect an audience more than who it is made for. Might as well ask people who's favorite ice cream is chocolate, WHY vanilla is not their favorite also. The answer is simply they don't like it as much, so it is not the favorite. ... ... but, why? oh FFS.... i like this story also, but wonder if it is just speculation or is there anything INSIDE THAT MOVIE'S UNIVERSE that shows this explanation as the truth, inside the movie? If not, it's just good fan theory. We are only allowed to believe what is shown inside the movie. Does one of the super mechas elbow his partner and whisper "He fell for it" ? pleasure or pain.... We FEEL pain - our brain tells us which finger we cut, because the nerves there signal brain and we FEEL it as "Pain". how would that work into a sentient AI? Would be cause wires to burn out and fail? our preception of pain is that it "Hurts" us and we wish it to stop. What would "HURT" an AI? or "FEEL GOOD"? I say nothing ...thus, it will never be "alive". just imitation of life good points its a tech thriller, based around tech. tech tech tech. tech of the company, not working when she changed conditions tech of the cell phone and answering machine tech of typing spelling errors being pivitol to the plot tech of emails tech of video communications tech of file systems, and a way forward thinking VR design we still don't have yet. all working to keep itself entertaining inside a watchable movie, that you don't have to be a nerd to understand and follow. never understood why people look at OLD movies and expect bleeding edge fx in them? Why is that 1939 King Kong film lacking good CGI?? duh While I fully agree a large sequel universe movie does well, I feel like most other theater films are really tanking. This film doesn't look fantastic, so probably deserved, for sure, but it's not surprising. I knew this was coming. Spiderman. :) from a multibillion dollar franchise...I don't really see a good comparison to an original stand alone. Why is this a shock when theaters are covid empty? I don't know if our when theaters will ever be normal again. Maybe never ....just keep watching the box office receipts.... The truth of woke interest and success is there... no im asking how we, the programmers of IA, will ever be able to program them to know pleasure? "your circuits will FEEL excitement..." right, but in what way? 1. by programming a ...... a what? I have no idea...? or 2. programming them to externally SHOW excitement as we see in others. Number two is just superficial, and I don't think there is anyway, other than #2 that we could ever program AI to feel pleasure or excitement. or sorry or greif or happiness.... see what I am saying? Just because it acts excited, doesn't mean it really is. This might be proof AI will never be alive. Ever. there is always bad films out there, yes. you don't think business ramps up the amount of production when a new open platform surfaces? like VHS or streaming? I remember seeing new/random/bad movie population growing when video rental stores started opening. streaming was slow on the uptake, but once it went mainstream, I witnessed tons more movies cropping up. Some streamers have nothing but crap on them, never a well known movie to even be found. Roku also has tons of garbage channels. Entertainment is subjective, but surely, there is a way to sort quality verses quantity. thanks for the excruciating amount of detail. in addition to all that detail, perhaps you could fill in exactly what "Looks Terrible" to you? are the effects terrible? are the sets terrible? is the lighting terrible? did the story sound terrible? is the acting terrible? perhaps the sound was terrible? could it be that a movie that is not of interest to you at all, is called terrible? if so, that is an odd way relate to movies. surely, there are many other movies in existence that don't interest you particularly, that have to be labeled terrible, and yet they are extremely good to other people. movies are totally subjective, unless, of course there are facts behind it, lets say, the film had no budget and the sets were badly spray painted cardboard because of the no budget, we could all agree that, yes, it looks terrible to one and all. with zero detail, your post is just like your review: terrible
