It was big at the time of it's release. It grossed $214 million, which adjusted for inflation to 2021 standards, equates to $403 million.
It's just one of those films that's of it's time. It's an erotic thriller like other Michael Douglas films (Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction). Those were huge films too back when they were released. Fatal Attraction earned the equivalent of $785 million and Basic Instinct $701 million. Fatal Attraction was the second highest grossing domestic release in 1987 with Basic Instinct being the fourth highest domestic release in 1992.
This sub-genre is dead in the water. Not many care for them any more. With Disclosure being eclipsed by the two aforementioned Douglas films, especially Basic Instinct which endures due to Sharon Stone's famous scene.
It is a good film, I agree. Just one of those things that was big once upon a time but doesn't resonate with modern audiences. Not many younger film fans seek it out.
