Cut the guy some slack. He at least got the correct number of unnecessary ellipsis.
I do like the way the guards dress, though.
Prisons (like Franco movies) run on a tight budget. SHIRTS AREN'T CHEAP! ;) I watched that scene today. You'd probably need a lip reader to figure what he said, but I expect it is something like "there are stairs". There's actually another scene about a minute later where the same thing happens. After they climb down and then find the engraved name of Father Thomas on the wall, you again see his lips move and that he is saying something, but there is nothing audible on either the English or Italian audio.
I randomly remembered a scene which bugs me a little. I think it's near the beginning where Bob? starts messing around with that blow-up doll and then suddenly he spots something on the ground which makes him groan with terror. It looks to me like some sort of... baby corpse covered in maggots?
Yes, I think it was supposed to be a rotting baby corpse. I think she looked very beautiful in this. I like her figure more voluptuous compared to her early films when she was rail thin. I think when people look at older movies, they often feel people (particularly actresses) looked older because they are comparing to now, when all stars have done so much with fillers, surgery, and other "light" touch ups.
I just watched it. The transfer is good. Sound is Mono. Transfer is not 1:85 to 1 as stated on IMDb. It fills the top and bottom of my 16x9 screen with little black bars on the side. It looks like 3:2 to me.
1.85 was the original theatrical aspect ratio, maybe. On the Blue Underground DVD it's 1.66:1, which was a more common theatrical AR for European productions. It is a pretty good looking transfer. I like the interview with Jess Franco on the disc at as well. Yeah man. You two have really blown the lid on the lack of realism in this women in prison exploitation flick. Probably, but the Masons knew the mother was crazy, and they likely (as everyone seemed to) believed it would be hereditary. Sometimes mental illness is. But I think her "I am sorry for you" was due to her knowing that he was somewhat set up, and her recognition that he would never really be happy there in Jamaica with his Creole wife. Same here. I just watched this and when that scene came up, I kept thinking she looked like Naomi Watts. Are there different sketches, or is it just a different connecting storyline? I've only seen it with what I guess is "The Pitch" (Dennis Quad trying to sell a movie to Greg Kinnear). Ha, now you have me unsure! But given that they were both asian, it makes more sense that is what he said. She was just sitting at the computer working, not doing anything or in any pose that would make a djinn comment fit. Yeah, I love her in that one (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) too. But when I think back to the some of her earlier English roles (Captain Corelli's Mandolin, for instance) I don't think she came off near as good as she did in her Spanish roles. And then look at something like Vanilla Sky. She was much better playing the same part in the earlier Spanish version Abre Los Ojos. What did you think about the scene where Jacque rapes Carolien? From a story standpoint, I almost got the feeling it was meant as a sort of warning or punishment for her character. The movie mostly took a non-judgemental tone about the relationship between Carolien and Hugo, but then I wondered if the assault by Jacque was meant in a "see girls? If you slut around with an old man, you'll get a reputation and guys will assume you're free pickings. This will happen". With it being a Dutch movie in the 70's I don't know if that was the intent or not.
But don’t you think it was because it was in English - a second language for Adjani or maybe a third.
Possibly. I did think about Penelope Cruz and how she was much better in Spanish movies that English ones. She's gotten better in English over the years and I think she's great either way now. In this, Isabelle Adjani didn't seem like she struggled with English at all. I just don't know if that was really the issue here or not.
And stick with Adjani for Queen Margot, One Deadly Summer, Story of Adele H., Camille Claudel, Deadly Circuit, Quartet. And call it a day.
Yeah, I've seen all of those but Adele H, which I'll get to eventually.
I think that Sharon was surprisingly good and Adjani surprisingly bad and her character was botched in terms of writing. Palminteri's character was nothing more than a caricature.
I have to agree. I saw this because I have recently seen some fantastic performances from Isabelle Adjani in much better movies. I didn't like this at all, but of the leads, I'd have to say Sharon Stone was the best. I didn't like Isabelle's wide-eyed performance, but I know she's capable of more. It seems like a badly written character she had. That was where the movie really lost me - the so obviously not Barbara body double they were using in that scene. Really annoying. Barbara was a great looking woman who had done nudity in the past. Barbara would have only been in her early 40's when this was made and surely her own body would have looked better than that stand in for the scene. So I don't know if the producers wanted the fake tits, or if Barbara didn't want to do the scene. But they should have cast someone who would do the scene herself and had that all set up ahead of time. Credit to Peggy Trentini playing Karina and Melissa Stone playing the daughter Darla for at least doing their own nude scenes. Watched this on Tubi where it is under the title "Midnight Vendetta". Add that to the IMDB title of "Poison" and the original title of "Thy Neighbor's Wife". I watched this today and liked it well enough. Far more than the other movie I had seen (A Woman Like Eve) from the same director. Marina de Graaf did pretty well with a not easy part. She doesn't look the 14 she's supposedly playing, but not all girls look the same at that age. And the fact that she looks a bit older (was 17-18 when this was made) makes it more believable the 41 year old Hugo goes for her. A few scenes I found funn: - the performance by Tanja and Carolien at the school where they are the pregnant angels and do the song about abortion. Tanja was cute. - Carolien's parents arguing after the dad finds her trying to take the birth control pills Shoot 'Em Up is hella fun! I loved every second of it. Why? Some of those guys were very lucky. You're some extra Italian dude who goes to set, and you get to have a couple Penthouse Pets double-team you? Poor, poor man... I like that in your fantasy where some family innocently rents Caligula from a video store to watch a historical film together, it takes over two hours into this movie (the blow job you reference) for them to figure out something is amiss.
