I Am Sorry For You?

I didn't understand why Amelie was sorry for Edward. Does anyone know?

reply

She was sorry for him because he was set up by the Masons to marry Antoinetta/Bertha. They knew that she was crazy, and by the time Amelie says this phrase Antoinetta/Bertha has poisoned him. Amelie knows that if Antoinetta/Bertha is not contained (sent away, locked up, etc.) she will become even more mentally ill than her mother and probably kill Edward. Edward is in a a lose-lose situation until Antoinetta/Bertha dies, although he has her money to live well on.

Amelie was also competing for his affection.

How could they know she was crazy when she wasn't crazy in the least when Edward married her and they had their loving honeymoon? The Mason family only knew Antoinette's mother went crazy.

As for the "poison," it wasn't a fatal poisoning (obviously), but rather some kind of obeah (voodoo) drug concocted by Antoinette's witch-nurse.

Everything would've been fine if Edward hadn't turned on Antoinette (with unconvincing justification, I might add). In other words, Edward was the cause of Antoinette's forthcoming mental illness, not anything hereditary.

Probably, but the Masons knew the mother was crazy, and they likely (as everyone seemed to) believed it would be hereditary. Sometimes mental illness is.

But I think her "I am sorry for you" was due to her knowing that he was somewhat set up, and her recognition that he would never really be happy there in Jamaica with his Creole wife.

Thanks for the input. I need to give it a rewatch since I haven't seen it for like five years and such details are foggy.
