The Great Silence
The Vanishing
Great call for The Year my Voice Broke, also it's follow up "Flirting" based on Noah Taylor's character Danny, also starring a young Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Thandie Newton who delivers one of her best performances in this film. I actually prefer Flirting to The Year My Voice Broke but only just. Both films have a downbeat feel to them but god the scripts are so poetic and cinematography is fantastic.
A Nos Amours is fantastic. Diary of a Teenage Girl is really underrated.
I think the film is fantastic, but it does rely on it's central performance and Keisha Castle-Hughes definitely knocks it out of the park. All the performances are great. It's saving grace is that it have gone down the route of been too sweet, but nope it's got a toughness that leads to Keisha's soft sweet performance.
A shame she never really went on to bigger things, she did a part in one of the Star Wars prequel's and her biggest main role was probably The Nativity Story. She had a few rough years, she had a child when she was only 17, got into drugs and married pretty young. Also she found out she had bipolar disorder. But it seems she's fine now, and she's recently done Games of Thrones and Walking Dead. So hopefully she find a role as great as Whale Rider down the road.
I don't think Fight Club would be considered a Coming of Age, would it?. The Basketball Diaries is still Di Capio's best performance imo.
Whale Rider is a fantastic choice, great performance from Keisha Castle- Hughes (wasn't she Oscar nommed for it), shame she didn't go onto a better film career (although she sadly had Bipolar Disorder, also had a child as a teenager, fell into drugs and got married young and is now divorced. But she seems to got her thing together is doing well and was in Games of Thrones and Walking Dead). But if she does nothing else she always has that performance in Whale Rider.
Fucking Amal is the total opposite of Warmest Colour. It's just a sweet coming of age lesbian comedy/drama. No 10 minute lesbian sex scenes. The film is under 85 minutes and I'd put it in my top 5 coming of age films. A must see imo. In most countries they changed the title to "Show Me Love".
American Graffiti is a classic. 16 Candles isn't my favorite John Hughes film. City of God is a masterpiece, and definitely would be in any top 50 coming of age film list, and any best film ever list.
Almost Famous is fantastic, the last great Cameron Crowe film imo. School Ties is underrated especially when you consider the top cast it has (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon been two most famous). Breaking Away is awesome, another one that doesn't get enough love.
Totally forgot Lucas, what a sweet coming of age film that was. It get's lost in the whole Brat Pack or teen comedies from the 80's. But I love it for the fact that all the characters are likeable. Winona Ryder is probably at her sweetest in this. Sure it's cliched but the heart to the film is great. I'd put it right up there in the top 50 Coming of age films ever.
Some Kind of Wonderful, get's overshadowed by other John Hughes works but it's the one that's aged better then most of the others. Ghost World is sweet. Adventureland, I think is a awesome film. Doesn't get the love it deserves really. Great soundtrack too.
Bend it Like Beckham and Dirty Dancing, not a fan of either. Juno, I think cast aside is massively overrated.
But that's a great list CKid.
What ones haven't you see Somecodhopper?
thanks for some of the recommendations. Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger, I haven't seen although it has a great cast with Toni collette, Keisha Castle Hughes (from Whale Rider), and Essie Davis (the Badadook and Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries). Seems well worth checking out.
I wasn't a big fan of Lost And Delirious. Housekeeping is so underrated, another call out from the same director (Bill Forsyth) is the even better coming of age Gregory's Girl. I check out the rest thanks.
Film is fantastic but is let down by it's ending really. Personally would have been better ending if Raphina told Cosmo, that it was better for both of them to not be together as they both had different dreams. Just let Cosmo move on with the band to do their thing.
My problem with the ending is I never got Raphina was that in love with Cosmo, even throughout the film it felt more on Cosmo's side then her's, sure she liked him but it would have been a lot better if they didn't get together but thats just me. The film came off more a love story about making music with mates then a love story. A bunch of loners and miscast trying to live the rock star dream.
The ending did feel a bit bleak cause it's clear neither have the slightest clue what they are doing. I don't think the relationship will last, it seems like Raphina is pretty flaky. Poor Cosmo is very in the moment kind of guy. I always got the ending was a dream of Cosmo's once Raphina walks in during the last song they do at the gig. I think the last time Cosmo really saw her was in the park when she turned him down. Everything to the end was just a dream.
I'm not a big of her offscreen, but she's a solid actress and has made some interesting choices. I think she get's crapped on for the Twilight Films but take them out and you have a decent film career.
For me personally her best work, Personal Shopper, Panic Room, Into The Wild, On The Road (tough to follow a famous book, but still better then many give it credit for), Adventureland, Clouds of Sil Maria, The Runaways, Still Alice, Camp X Ray, Welcome to the Rileys, Speak, Certain Women, The Safety of Objects. The Cake Eaters, Cafe Society and The Yellow Handkerchief.
Not everything she's done is great, stuff like Lizzie, Equals, American Ultra, The Messengers, Anesthesia and Twilight Films. I can understand why she went for stuff like Billy Lynn's Halftime Walk, it's directed by Ang Lee. It didn't work but she's not bad in it.
I think she's missing what her ex and co star of Twilight franchise Robert Pattinson, that stand out career defining role like he put in with Good Time (how he never got a Oscar nod for that I never know). A role that made him a must watch actor, to be fair to him he's chosen great art house directors and hasn't touch a commercial film since Twilight Films. Something Kristen hasn't done, a lot of her worse work are from those films.
I'd go for Actors in their late 30's early 40's.
Sarah (Glenn Close) Amy Adams
Harold (Kevin Kline) Chiwetel Ejiofor
Nick (William Hurt) Michael Fassbender
Meg (Mary Kay Place) Emily Blunt
Sam (Tom Berenger) Oscar Issac
Michael (Jeff Goldbulm) Adam Driver
Karen (JoBeth Williams) Rachel McAdams
Tough one to cast Meg Tilly Chloe, probably go for a unknown or up and comer.
If it was made today it would still be hard to cast Irish actresses, they would probably go for British actresses like they did with Minnie Driver and Saffron Burrows. Only Geraldine O'Rawe was the only Irish one out of the three females. We're not as blessed at churning out Actress in Ireland like we are with Actors. During that time no one really was there to cast in those roles that the rest of world would have known.
Over the years we have had some fine actresses and in the case of Saoirse Ronan, one of the best. Some great talent like Ruth Negga, Sarah Bolger, Kerry Condon, Caitriona Balfe, Sarah Greene, Elaine Cassidy (she's one I thought should have gone on to bigger things), Seana Kerslake (she's one to watch out for), Charlie Murphy and Jessie Buckley (another one who's set for big things).
You had some Irish actors in Circle of Friends, Colin Firth character was supposed to be English. Today you could cast a Irish actor for Chris o' Donnell's role as well as Alan Cummings. But I can understand why they cast outside Ireland for the main parts at the time.
Definitely the cast is the high spot for the film. Some of the accents waver here or there but it's the type of film if done now, they would cast a whole Irish cast now but back in the 90's we weren't churning out young talent like we are now.
But it's a film that considering it has Jared Leto, Christina Ricci, Gabriel Bryne (who wrote the script for this), Colm Meaney, Stephen Rea, Catherine o hara, Emily Mortimer. That's a pretty cool cast alright. The film is a fine coming of age film, Leto accent is a bit dodgy but you forgive him as he puts in a good performance. Not a classic, but well worth checking it out it's on YouTube.
Probably 3 days, I'm not a great sleeper ever since I worked night work in my early 20's. I'm lucky to get 6 hours really.
But what did you expect from her Career?. If you were expecting her to become a A-List Hollywood actress then yeah she probably failed. But in term's of been a reliable TV Actress she's done pretty well. She was doing Chuck and Dexter back to back was probably the height of her fame, and has a role in the popular The Handmaids Tale. She was in 24: Live Another Day. She has a pretty damn good TV career. Her Movie career is rubbish, and she's been in some horrible films.
For her looks and talent, she is probably someone who should have been a bigger star then she is. But she's done four great TV shows in Dexter (up to a certain point), Chuck, 24 and A Handmaids Tale. I wouldn't call that a bad career.
Well in my opinion of course.
The Dreamers (2003) Bernardo Bertolucci last great film, Eva Green definitely stands out and this is before she went with her black hair and white make up look of recent years. But she's really good in this, her debut performance. Put her on the map.
Kingdom of Heaven (2005) Get the directors cut, she has a much bigger part in it and delivers a very good performance.
Cracks (2009) probably her best performance to date for me. Sadly underseen by many.
Womb (2010) and Perfect Sense (2011) both little seen British indie films and both have two of Green's better roles. Especially Womb.
300: Rise of The Empire and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), both films aren't great compared to the first films. But Green is the best thing in both, probably more so in 300. She gets naked in both which helps lol.
She's not come close to the performance in Cracks in her film career, and her most iconic role is probably Casino Royale. Her best work has probably been on TV with Camelot and Penny Dreadful. Her film career has been patchy at best. She seems happy to do co starring roles in Indies and her odd roles in blockbusters haven't done well in the box office.
That's what stood out for me when I first saw it, at how much heart and sweetness it had especially dealing with the porn industry. The first half of the film is just a sweet coming of age comedy, and then once Tim Olyphant it took a darker turn into a different film almost. It helps the film that it had a top cast, you have Olyphant, Paul Dano and Emile Hirsch in it. I think Elisha Cuthbert delivers her best performance, also helps that she was at her cutest at this time. The soundtrack is fantastic.
Sure it has some of the sex comedy tropes there but it has a heart to it that makes it stand out.
Definitely Ex Machina without a shadow of a doubt imo. She deserved the Oscar for that performance rather then The Danish Girl.
She's mostly a TV actress now, she did the Netflix show The Ranch with Sam Elliot and Ashton Kutcher. Her most famous roles outside 24 was probably The Girl Next Door and Love Actually. Let's be honest here, she was all about her looks rather then her talent. She's at her level now, wasn't a good enough actress to go beyond playing the young hottie. Simple as really.
