Quills is a underrated gem, has a fantastic performance from Geoffrey Rush and anything where Michael Caine plays a bastard is worth a watch. Also Joaquin Phoenix is in it, deserves a watch.
I loved The Libertine, although it's a pretty damn depressing watch. But it probably has Depp's probably last great performance before he become a shadow of himself and started to over act.
DOFP- probably top 10 of the best superhero films of all time
Logan- Another one that will probably be in many top 10 best superhero films
Deadpool- Just a ton of fun and Reynolds is awesome
Deadpool 2- the sequel doesn't get the love it deserves imo
First Class- Underrated by many, and worth it for Fassbender as Magneto.
X2- The best film from the first go around of the X-Men franchise
X1- Worth it for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Apocalypse- Just a passable X-men film
The Wolverine- let down by it's 3rd act. Overall a decent superhero film
Dark Phoenix- just meh
X3- a mess of a film
Origins- A massive disappointment thank god the other Wolverine and Deadpool's redeemed the characters.
On the Mystique thing, that what happens when you hire a up and coming talent at the time who by the time you are into the reboot ends up been the new IT girl of Hollywood. So the studio or producers probably want her front and center and in doing that set's back the remain films in the franchise.
I think Apocalypse problem was it followed probably the best X-men film in the Day's of Future Past. Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse wasn't a very good villain. It dragged in places and just wasn't as awesome as Day's of Future Past. None of the young cast were as interesting as Magneto or Professor X. It probably go down as the third best out of the newer X-Men Franchise, I think the new film is the weakest film.
It be in the middle of the pack in the overall X-Men franchise.
It was a passable film, worth watching for Elle Fanning's performance alone. It probably would have been more interesting if it was more then just a romantic driven film and more just on Mary herself, more on the art and Mary then it been just about her romance with Percy. Haifaa al-Mansour as the director, did try to add some nice touches to the film. You have some nice performances from Douglas Booth as Percy Shelly and the underrated Bel Powley as her step sister. Tom Sturridge had nice turn as Lord Bryon.
I watched it on Netflix and it was a passable watch and nothing that will stay with you. I think it's another very good performance from Fanning to add to her resume. But it won't go down as anyone's greatest work.
Definitely think that has something to do with it, she was his pet project and without him she wouldn't have won that Oscar (he did the same with Gwyneth Paltrow, in how a decent performance but with the right campaign backing can win you a Oscar) and I'm sure he got a lot of her meatier roles for her. I wouldn't put it all down to that but I think it certainly has something to do with it.
The fact her last few films haven't exactly been lighting up the box office, a bit of a blow to her as she's the headlining act. Even the new X-Men has flopped, probably aside from her Hunger Games films were her biggest box office hits. She does make brave choices that weren't going to be big money makers, like Mother and Red Sparrow. So you got to admire her for that.
But I think the major thing is that her time as the golden girl of Hollywood is now gone. I think the likes of Emma Stone have come along and stole it. She hasn't proved to be a success when her films depended on her name alone to bring in audiences, the Hunger Games and X-Men franchises would have been successful with or without her. Also she seems to have a new man in her life and probably wants to just live her life and probably doesn't have the push or desire of her early career.
She's okay, far worst actresses out there and at 22 she's got a lot more time to start showing that early promise she had.
She plays far too safe for me, when she decides to push herself she can deliver a very good performance. I thought Cameron Post was the best thing she's done in years. I just think she got stuck with playing the love interest's in Young Teen films and some other bad choices. After the great one two of Kick Ass and 500 Days of Summer, she's got a ton of potential even at 22. She just needs a performance that will just blow your mind.
I wouldn't put any of those in the same bracket as Ronan imo. I probably give if Wasikowska, she can put in a great performance here and there. She's still very one note thought. Browning and Moretz, have potential but don't show it anywhere near enough to be Ronan's league right now.
The names you mentioned, no to Delevingne (she's just the IT girl of the moment), Waston (she's not a good actress and is still only known cause people fancy her and Potter fanbase), Ridley (besides Star Wars, what else has she done) and Mara (you should have said Rooney as she's the younger and more talented sister imo).
Woodley, is very hit and miss and doesn't that stand out performance, Ronan has many of them. Lawrence, she's a bigger star then Ronan, has a Oscar (still don't think she should have won imo), but I think Ronan is the better actress. Olsen, started off pretty well but is now stuck with MCU. Wind River is the last time I've been impressed by her. Vikander, is probably the closet on the list you mentioned that you could put ahead of Ronan as of now. She's got the Oscar and a few amazing performances on her resume.
I add Carey Mullingan and Emma Stone to her contemporaries who at least give her a run for her money.
You couldn't blame them for wanting to act in this project. It's visual's are amazing and the script is well written. Saoirse Ronan does more indie movies then Hollywood ones, just count her last three years of her career Stockholm Pennsylvania, on Chesil Beach, The Seagull and even Brooklyn and Lady Bird were indie films picked up by bigger studios. The only big Hollywood film she did was Mary Queen of Scots. A lot of the actors and actresses in it are mostly well known British TV stars.
I'm sure a lot of them did it cause it's a excellent film.
Chris Evan's I don't think is having a great run outside his Marvel films. Pratt, Jurassic Park Films would be a success with or without him, Passengers and The Magnificent Seven did fine. He does have great work like Zero Dark Thirty and Moneyball behind him . I'd put Scarlett Johansson as someone who's films outside Marvel films aren't massive hits, I'd put her up there with Hemsworth as someone who's not putting up major numbers outside her non Marvel works.
Hemsworth shows he has some talent with his recent Thor turns. He picks some good films like Bad Times At El Royale, Rush, In The Heart of The Sea, 12 Strong, Cabin In The Woods and Blackhat is underrated imo. He's really though got some stinkers especially big box office films like MIB, Ghostbusters and The Huntsman. Sure most of the good ones don't make money but doesn't take away they are good films.
Out of the Marvel cast, Mark Ruffalo C.V speaks for itself, Jeremy Renner has a good career outside the Marvel films, Josh Brolin is a knocking it out of the park recently but is a respected character actor before Marvel came along.
It's up to the viewer really, you could read a ton of things into it.
I think Flemming did it, just the evil smile as he walks away and the look into the camera as he hitches a ride just cemented it for me. I think even Det. Insp. Jackson even though he has to go by the book and knows Det. Steele is right, even he knows Flemming is definitely dodgy. The way he looks in disgust at him and doesn't shake his hand. I did love that slow reveal at the end as he goes from wimpy nervous loner type into a suave cool cold blooded murder in just one swoop. Excellent film.
It's a true story and it's a important subject about the epidemic of the Aids virus of the 80's. Not every gay story ends with someone dying from Aids, Call Me By My Name or Handsome Devil didn't.
Tim could have made himself out to be a saint, seen as he wrote the book. But he was straight out honest about his selfishness and cheating. I wouldn't call him a horrible person, he was just like most of us flawed. Plenty of love stories and relationships (Straight or Gay) that have spouses who cheat or sleep around and they still love their other halves and other halves love them. That's why probably it's such a highly regarded book as he doesn't hold back from his own behavior.
I can see why some might not like him and it's mentioned quite a bit in the review's of the book and film that Tim isn't always likable.
It wasn't bad acting as Mark Duplass is excellent as Jim, as is Sara Paulson as Amanda.
I think he's just a guy who's haunted that he lost the best thing in his life which was Amanda. It's clear they were on the same page and they both understand one another. Plus the abortion, where he feels guilt for been a immature kid and wanting to be there for her and be a father. Those tapes they did as teenagers about been parents and married couple were probably what Jim wanted for him and Amanda. I think he's definitely troubled and it's clearly bought out some anger issues and depression in him. He seems like a guy who probably hasn't had a relationship since Amanda and probably is a bit of a loner.
I think he's just a lonely depressed thirty something guy.
I agree, I don't think Jim is selfish, he's was straight out honest with her about his life and how unhappy he is. He basically admits at the end he messed up and wished he didn't. He's a troubled man and probably letting loose at the end and been forgiven by Amanda will let him go on and live his life and find himself a good woman.
Amanda is the more interesting character, I don't get the feeling her marriage to her older husband is as great as she portray's to Jim. I definitely think their are feelings there but I think by the end I think Amanda probably snaps out of it and is ready to move on. I think she cares for Jim and is probably deeply worried for him. She's troubled herself.
That's what I took from the ending, I don't see Amanda and Jim getting back together and that probably be the last time in the car park they ever see of one another. But at least it's a burden off both Jim and Amanda's chest's as both have clearly been emotional damaged by the loss of a child and their relationship. I get the vibe that Jim probably never had a relationship since Amanda and was beaten down by guilt and loss for Amanda and their unborn child. I think Amanda loves her husband and her step kids, but probably needed something like the night with Jim just to let the emotional baggage go. Both will probably be somewhat better for it going forward.
I wouldn't call it a happy or sad ending, it's a honest ending for two damaged people. I don't see them getting back together and living happily ever after. I think both probably need some help and keeping apart from one another will be for the better.
It's up to the audience Interpretation really.
I'm not thinking she's leaving her husband, even with the kiss I didn't get the vibe her marriage was loveless. My take on the ending is I think Jim probably has healed a few wounds as has Amanda and both can move on now. He seemed like the whole loss of his child with Amanda and their relationship breaking up had an massive effect on his well being, I got the feeling he probably never had another relationship or let anyone get close to him since Amanda. He probably had a few one night stands but I think Amanda was his only serious girlfriend in 22 years. Amanda, who thought Jim was a bit of childish heartless teenager, finds out with the letter that he cared deeply for during that time. I think that probably be the last time they probably meet up.
For a good part of the film I was expecting a twist of Amanda not been married and the food not been for her sister but for her and that like Jim, she was a lonely soul.
They could have cut it down a little and let it flow a bit better, that's the problem I have with Heaven's Gate is the pacing with a little smoother editing it could have been a all time classic imo. Some scenes drag in places.
The Harvard scene is a case in point, also Hurt and Kristofferson were way too old for those parts as students. Both very good actors especially late great Hurt but neither early 20 something years old lol. But it's always great to see Joesph Cotton and as I said some of the set design is fantastic. That huge dance scene in the middle of the court yard is fantastic. David Lean would have been proud.
She's not going to be troubling any most beautiful women in the world lists. But she's got that cute girl next door look to her. She's probably a little too skinny for my tastes but she's cute.
In terms of looks she was way hotter then she is now. She's lost far too much weight. For a while there she would have been up there as one of the most beautiful actresses around.
In terms of her acting, she had a good acting career as a young actress. some great films in there, Once Upon a Time in America is probably the best film she's been in. Not bad for a debut film is it. Phenomena is campy fun. Labyrinth is a children's classic and is probably one of her most famous films. The Hot Spot is the film where she went from child actress to been a adult, her first nude scene and she was only 19. That definitely moved her on from been known as a child actress.
After for a while in the 90's she got stuck with the girlfriend roles in many films, I loved The Rocketeer and Connelly was at her hottest in that. Higher Learning is a guilty pleasure. The late 90's got a little better for her, she's very good in a small role in Inventing The Abbots, Dark City is one of the cult films of the 90's.
Then the early 00's hit, Connelly went from sex siren into a serious Actress. Requiem of a Dream changed her career overnight. Then followed Pollack, then her Oscar winning role in A Beautiful Mind. Great performances in Little Children (2006) Reservation Road (2007) and House of Sand And Fog (2003) followed. She was wasted in Blockbusters. After around 2007, her career hasn't been up the same standards of her early 00's to mind 00's peak.
I think she was a good solid child actress, easily slipped away into Adult roles and became a sex symbol form the late 80's until late 90's but was typecast in girlfriend roles. Reinvented herself as a serious award winning actress for a good 7 years in the early 00's. Slipped into pay cheque Jobs since then and is moving into TV roles.
She's had a very good career for a while she was a top notch actress.
