It's another one of those films that is voted way too low on IMDB, it's on 6.8 but I'd have it at 7.5 at the most. Great performances all round especially from James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom, The Drop, Adore) for a Aussie actor, to pull off a Galway accent, while also speaking in Gaelic (as a Irishman, it's a tough Language to pull off) is pretty damn impressive. He also looked pretty bad ass during the whole film and I bought him as a top Solider.
Hugo Weaving is always great. Also great to see Stephen Rea in a small role. Barry Keoghan who's Ireland's next big thing is a bit wasted in a small role as a British Solider. Freddie Fox, Moe Dunford and Jim Broadbent play the bad guys perfectly. But overall it had the feel of the Aussie classic The Proposition for me. It's pretty bleak in places and rightly so when dealing with Famine. I loved the use of Gaelic for most of the film too.
Overall a very good watchable 100 minute film, not a classic or anything but a lot better then it's 6.8 on IMDB.
On the top of my head, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Bisset, Ann Margret, Ava Gardener, Isabelle Adjani, Catherine Deneuve, Pam Grier, Julie Christie, Nastassja Kinski, Juliette Binoche for me would be in the same category as Robbie/Belluci. I think Kinski for a time in the 80's and early 90's was the sexiest actress that I've ever seen. Stone was attractive during her peak, never got the Pamela Anderson thing if i'm been honest.
I do agree that ScarJo is attractive, but I find it mind boggling when it comes to these sexiest women alive lists that she's always in the top 3. I don't know, it's someone's opinion of cause but I have a dozen women over her as the most beautiful around. I think it's cause she's got that curvy look to her that's pretty rare these days that probably gets her all the love. But for me take away the fancy make up, all the expensive fashions and top notch photographers and I just wouldn't see her turning heads on the street. That's just me.
He's no Alex Lawther, who I think is a special talent in the waiting. Butterfield has done a few films that really impressed me a lot like Journey's End, X&Y, The Boy In The Stripped Pajamas, The House of Tomorrow and Hugo. But he's done a lot of crap even this early into his career, stuff like The Space between us, Time Freak, Slaughterhouse Rulez.
If he starts taking more risks with his roles then he could be in for the long run.
1. Sicario (the sequel is massively underrated imo)
2. The Drop (underrated imo, Hardy and Gandolfini are both awesome. Better then 7.1 rating it's got on IMDB)
3. Prisoners (Jackman best performance for me. Great thriller)
4. The Gift (another film that's underrated. Jason Bateman is fantastic in it)
5. Gone Girl (not Fincher's best film, but worth it for Pike's performance alone)
6. The Place beyond the Pines (for me the weakest film on the list, still very good. Just the film isn't as Strong once Ryan Gosling isn't around)
Depends what you want answered. If it's a Superhero, blockbuster or Indie film that's got a ton of hype you will likely get a lot of answers. But anything else sure it's tough but it was on IMDB too.
I don't, prefer this place as it's not full of trolls which sadly ruined IMDB message boards.
Unlike say her co-star in Never Let Me Go, Carey Mulligan. Keira never quite had the range as a actress to carry her forward. Mulligan even if she's not the lead in films. She usually steals the film anyway. I can't remember Keira ever stealing a film. That's why today Carey is the more respected actress. It's nothing to do with her having a child or been married, a lot of actresses have become mothers and wives and still keep up been great actress or keeping themselves in the limelight.
Also outside the POTC franchise, she's never really had super big hit films. Love Actually would be the closet. Most of her work is usually little seen or just not very good. Atonement aside, she's never been blown away Oscar worthy in films either. She's a solid actress, that's been helped that she was highly rated by the studios and she's easy on the eyes.
Not saying she's not done good work, Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Anna Karenina, Begin Again, The Imitation Game, A Dangerous Method, Never Let Me Go. She's a good solid actress and I think once she gets older and slips into supporting work, she probably be a better actress for it.
To Die For or Dogville for me
Besides Casino Royale, I think this film is where she's at her hottest. She's yet to overdose on the white make up and the gothy look, she has now. It helped she was only 23 at the time and she left her mark on this film and it pretty much put her on the map. Great debut, besides her looks she's actually the best thing acting wise in this.
Not everything she acts in is usually a winner, but when the script is right and Julianne is bringing her A game, she's one of the best around. She's got a few stinkers and not good acting performances in her C.V, Non Stop, Carrie, The Lost World, The Forgotten, Law of Attraction, Seventh Son and a few others.
But when she has Still Alice, Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, The Hours, The Kids are Alright, Maps To The Stars, Magnolia, A Single Man, Short Cuts, Children of Men, Safe, Vanya on 42nd Street, An Ideal Husband (one of her underrated gems) under her belt. She's one of the best actresses around.
She's one of those actresses that with good stylists and make up team, and who the media tells you is way hotter then she is, is consider one of the hottest women in the world. Beauty of course is the eye of the beholder, but for me she's got a rocking body and cute face if she wasn't famous and hadn't all the best of beauty care in the world. She'd be a solid 7. I would put someone like Jennifer Lawerance, Eva Green, Saoirse Ronan, Sophie Turner, Rachel McAdams, Emilia Clarke in the same boat as Johansson. If they weren't famous and hadn't all the best beauty teams on hand, they wouldn't stand out at all. That's not saying their not attractive.
For me someone like a Margot Robbie and Monica Bellucci would be natural beauties for me. No matter if they weren't famous or not they'd be 10/10 if they were famous or not.
She's definitely a top actress, and deserves a mention when it comes to Actress of her generation. Dr Who role put her on the map seen as it's considered one of the greatest episodes.
Different Strokes for Different Folks, I always say she's a actress you either like or dislike, no in the middle with her. Her style of acting can leave some cold. I agree that those two movies probably aren't the best to see her, she's outshined in Crimson Peak by Jessica Chastin or just not given a really meaty role in The Double. She hasn't done anything for me that's been award worthy but she's far better then many give her credit for.
She definitely deserves a mention for it that's for sure.
Looking at the films she's done, she's knocked up quite a C.V at just 34 years of age. Drive, Wildlife, An Education, Far from The Madding Crowd, Shame, Never Let Me Go, Suffragette, Mudbound, Inside Llewyn Davis. I'm not a big fan of Great Gatsby, Wall Street sequel, Brothers (she's excellent in it but the film isn't great compared to Danish version)
She's yet to do a role for me, that is really Oscar winning worthy. Some might disagree with that. I thought her performance in Shame was possibly the closet she's done one.
Jessica Chastin, Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander would probably challenge Mulligan for that spot. Rooney Mara is very good but is very hit and miss imo. Emma Stone, many would disagree with me but is a fine young actress but I don't see her as a actress of a generation. Natalie Portman could be in the list for that discussion but she can be awesome in one thing then look bang average in something else. Felicity Jones, has a bit of the Mulligan's about her, but again she's far more miss then hit then Mulligan is. Elizabeth Olsen had a ton of potential but seemed to piss it away starring in blockbusters. One to watch out for right now that could challenge Mulligan and other 3 i mentioned could be Florence Pugh. She's been knocking it out of the park recently and is only 23. If she continues on the way she is could be in for been a actress of her generation.
Definitely could have done with a little editing to make it flow a bit better. But well worth it for the performances alone especially from Garrett Hedlund,Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Mary J Blige and Jonathan Banks. It does take it's time at telling it's story, and that could put a lot of people off. But it's a solid 7 film.
