Why would a woman marry a man she knew was gay?

That is absolutely beyond me. She told Bernstein she knew about his affairs with men when she proposed to him. Did she think that she could change him? As her marriage went on, the movie shows she became depressed. No wonder. She finds him kissing another man, later holding a man's hand during the debut of his Mass. God knows what else went down in that marriage that the movie didn't show. She even tells him he'll wind up "a lonely old queen." But she masochistically stays with him. Why would any sane person do that?

reply

Never underestimate a persons need for money and security. You would be surprised what people are prepared to overlook...

reply

Because of the social expectations of the time. Not being able to tie down a man was considered the biggest failure a woman could have.

reply

The same reason that Cole Porter was married. Watch "DeLovely" with Kevin Kline.

reply

And that reason was?

reply

The woman respected Cole enough to want to help him build a respectable facade.

reply

you mean with Cary Grant

reply

Even today, every woman over 35 who opts to get married to a guy they don't love is in the exact same situation after she had her fun with Chad and Tyrone. She just wants safety and security at that point, and there are plenty of lonely simps around to do so.

In the movie's case, it was the post-wall effect of a bygone era.

"Chad and Tyrone"

HAHA

reply

In addition to everything else, people fall for great artists.

reply

It's very common for people to fall in love with those who don't love them in return. And a lot of people have no limit on what they'll endure for those they love.

reply

As I said, why would any sane person do that?

reply

Marriage isn’t always aways about sexual intimacy, sometimes it’s just out of convenience, mutual respect, and loving who you love, regardless how they feel about you.
There have been many a gay man who married a heterosexual woman, openly being gay that is, with/for similar circumstances, especially before being openly gay was an accepted societal norm.

reply

But I felt that they loved each other. It was just that Lenny loved a lot of people and things.

reply

Like the person above said. love isn't always sexual. You can love your best friend, it doesn't have to include lust.

reply

You may want to look up the definition of sane. You're asking why people marry people who don't love them. You've gotten several valid answers.

reply

You think marrying a man who doesn’t love you, as one poster noted, and having no limit to what you’ll endure, is “valid”? YOU may want to look up the definition of sane.

reply

Valid as in reasons why people do this. I see now you are being purposely obtuse.

reply

Funny - I’m thinking the same about you.

reply

Nearly a month later you are still arguing with people about your post. Thanks for proving you're obtuse.

reply

You can clearly see from the day stamps that my replies to you were the same day. Far from "nearly a month". Plainly it's you who's obtuse. And your comment took you 12 days?

reply

I can clearly see the time stamps you have been arguing with people as recently as an hour go. Two hours after you responded to me. And 55 days is almost a month. You need help.

reply

"55 days is almost a month"? ROTFL!!! If you think that, it's you who needs help.

reply

typo: 25 and that is almost a month

reply

Plus you ignored the fact you have arguing for those 25 days

reply

Oh please. Read the whole thread. Most posts I haven’t even responded to. I’ve only responded to those who’ve attacked my OP. But you’ve been trying to pick a fight with me your last 6 posts. You’re just an angry, pathetic little creep. And I don’t waste my time on thwarted people like you. You’re ignored.

reply

You never heard of bisexuality?
