Why would a woman marry a man she knew was gay?

That is absolutely beyond me. She told Bernstein she knew about his affairs with men when she proposed to him. Did she think that she could change him? As her marriage went on, the movie shows she became depressed. No wonder. She finds him kissing another man, later holding a man's hand during the debut of his Mass. God knows what else went down in that marriage that the movie didn't show. She even tells him he'll wind up "a lonely old queen." But she masochistically stays with him. Why would any sane person do that?

It used to happen all the time. Still does to some extent. People marry for all kinds of reasons and love others for all kinds of reasons. I think Lenny really loved her, but he loved everyone and that was part of what made him so complicated.

You don't seem to understand the times and the way it was for gay or bisexual people in that era. Being gay was such a taboo that people didn't talk about it or were programmed to think they would grow out of it. There also was no indication that she was aware of his affairs with men when they got married.
