13 Oscar noms

I think the record is 14, which Lord of the Rings and some other films got

If this wins Best Picture, it would probably have the lowest audience score of any winnner . The RT audience score is 32%

reply

also with the fact that IMDb scores it 6.4 out of 10. This is the most perplexing best picture nominee ever. On top of that, having the record of 2nd most nominations in Oscar history.

reply

And what about Anora?

Yet, everyone has heard of and seen Wicked. A really lousy movie. And there’s a part two.

Btw. Emilia Perez is fantastic.

reply

Fantastically insulting. Read up what Mexicans say about this travesty, then read up on what the trans community fell about this abomination.

Zoey Sardines "Mexican accent" is about as bad as Dick Van Dykes cockney accent.

Hollyweird picked its "token". Picked wrong this year.

Queer, or Challengers would have been the pick. But Hollyweird spent their gay pennies a few years ago with Moonlight, so they picked this one.

reply

I already know about this. It has also offended the LGBTQ community. You didn’t mention that. Ironically, most of the Mexicans I know are from Oaxaca and they did not like Roma. So it takes all kinds.

I loved this movie and so did the Cannes Film Festival. It’s not a token anything. Jacques Audiard is a great director. I love all his movies. Have you seen any of them?

Can I ask - did you see the movie at all? And if not, how do you feel you can comment. And, Zoe Saldana is her name. I think you might have meant Selena Gomez’s Spanish? So, tell me the Mexican films you have liked. What did you think of Y tu mamá también - this is one of my favorites. When you watched Roma - were you able to detect Cleo’s Mixtec accent from the others in the family.

reply

>So, tell me the Mexican films you have liked.

You're deflecting. And using a canned response to misdirect and discredit.

>I think you might have meant Selena Gomez’s Spanish?

No, I meant Zoe Sardine's awful Spanish accent. But glad you highlighted Selena Gomez as well.

It's laughable they gave Zoe Sardine an Oscar nod, but they mocked Tom Cruise for his "Irish" accent in Far, and Away. The performances are comparable.

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/11/16/entertainment/zoe-saldana-spanish-role-emilia-perez/index.html

>Jacques Audiard is a great director.

Most good directors have a misfire every now and then. Maybe it was a bit out of his wheelhouse trying to write and direct a musical in Mexico, about a drug cartel and a trans with a lot of dialogue in Spanish. Especially when he's a cis white man from France. Google translate must have been working overtime the day the script was banged out, I heard the dialogue was weird and woeful as well.

It would have helped if they had a Mexican on set to give pointers to the American actors.

The question is, did the academy even see this movie, or did it merely check the right quota boxes this year?

reply

What are the Mexican films you liked? It’s just a question. This is a movie site.

You didn’t see this movie either. Did you? And you’ve never even seen other Mexican films.

reply

The topic is this movie. Not other movies. Also, this is a Hollwood production.

A European cis white male writer. USA Hollywood cast that speak "beach Spanish" at best.

There's nothing "Mexican" about it other than the setting.

We get you like this misguided movie, and that's ok. I have a soft spot for Weekend at Bernie's and Soul Man, at least I can admit they are misguided.

reply

Also, this is a Hollywood production

No, it isn't. It's an international co-production. Predominantly French. It's the French entry for Best International Picture.

There's some money in it from US indies, along with some Mexican and Belgian money too. But it's not a Hollywood production in any meaningful sense.

reply

aaah yes. But it's not a MEXICAN movie.

The cast being majorly non-Mexican and lead roles Yankee is the key.

It's like saying Far and Away was an Irish film. Except in Far and Away, there were actual Irish actors in it.

At least Tom Cruises Irish accent is a couple of steps above Selena Gomez and Zoe Sardines Mexican accents.

reply

No, it's the French entry for the International category. That means CNC (in France) considers it to be French, and the Academy in the USA accepts it as French. Predominantly French-financed, predominantly French crew, French director, made in France, &c.

I'd say it was French.

But technically, it's an international co-production. So, yeah, as I say it's not a Hollywood film in any meaningful sense. By the same criteria, it's not a Mexican movie in any meaningful sense either.

So: yup.

reply

I'd say it was French.

So not Mexican.

as I say it's not a Hollywood film in any meaningful sense.

Apart from the leads being Yankees speaking beach Spanish, and as you say, some funding coming from the USA.

Like I said. Far and Away is closer to being an Irish movie than this is to being a Mexican movie.

reply

No, I just said it isn't Mexican in any meaningful sense, didn't I?

But casting has nothing whatsoever to do with a film's country of origin, which is determined only on the basis of where the production companies are based. It's about financing.

reply

But casting has nothing whatsoever to do with a film's country of origin

Casting has a lot to do with the reception though. Especially when the actors accents are laughable.

Then rewarded with an Oscar nom. Makes you think the Academy didn't even watch this misguided mess and were handed a sheet of paper with boxes ticked, and one box with a tick and a red circle around where it said TRANS.

Laughable. I won't be watching the Oscars this year, along with many others. It's not based on merit at all. Voting is based on political agenda, ticking boxes and flavour of the year. This year it happens to be TRANS without caring of the quality.

I hope it wins everything, then we can all wash our hands with this Hollyweird back slapping affair once and for all.

It has more Oscar nomations than One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Schindlers list!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It's about financing.

As you said. Some money came from the good old USA.

reply

Well, I wouldn't be voting for it if I were a member of the Academy. As I say in my other post in this thread, I just watched it this afternoon and I thought it was... OK. And really no more than OK.

Makes you think the Academy didn't even watch this misguided mess

Famously, a lot of Academy members really don't watch the movies. You could well be right about that.

There's a reason the Golden Globes is such a good predictor of how the Oscars will go and that's precisely because a lot of the Academy members aren't paying as much attention to their 'For Your Consideration' packages as perhaps they ought to be.

reply

What movie would you be voting for?

reply

Well, I haven't seen all of them. So what I say now is subject to change:

But, in the Best Picture category, probably The Substance. In the Best International Feature category probably The Girl with the Needle. But that may change as I see more of the nominees.

But I'd have liked to have seen Kneecap and Levan Akin's Crossing make the short list.

reply

All the movies nominated for best picture I think are valid except for Wicked. I also liked A Real Pain and The Apprentice and especially Nosferatu better than Dune 2, A Complete Unknown and I’m Still Here. I see Nickel Boys next week. I have, so far, seen ALL movies in a theater.

Emilia Perez is up for both best picture and best international film. France is not making the same mistake they did last year as Anatomy of the Fall could have won over Zone of Interest in the international selection. I think Count of Monte Cristo is an excellent movie and could have easily been a best film selection and should be in the international. Both The Substance and Emilia Perez got quite lengthy standing ovations at Cannes, but Anora won the Palme d’Or. I loved Emilia Perez btw. If it gets best picture, I am happy with that.

reply

I probably won't see Wicked. That's the one on the list I have no interest in. I struggle enough with musicals, which may help to explain my lukewarm response to Emila Perez.

I loved Emilia Perez btw. If it gets best picture, I am happy with that.

I'm not going to get irrationally angry about it if it wins Best Picture. As I say, I only thought it was OK. So I'm slightly baffled by 13 nominations. But I'm at least equally baffled by the online bandwagon that has formed around slating it -- seemingly mostly by people who haven't seen it or by people who've allowed social media to form their view of it and been determined not to like it when they did see it.

At worst, it's fine.

reply

This is not a movie site. I wish there was one. The same people are in some kind of herd. They don’t watch movies and it’s like they get a bulletin on what to like and not to like and they just say the same thing. But it wouldn’t make any difference if they saw it, although movies can cultivate, these people will never be cultivated. But occasionally you get good comments - yours opened my eyes to the two films I never heard of for foreign - Kneecap. I’d really like to see The Crossing.

I hope Demi Moore gets best actress and I hope Emilia Perez gets best picture. Both French directors - both did something so different and magnificent that blasted us out of everyday movies, including those tedious bios (which I think should be a separate category). I want Emilia Perez bc I really think it is excellent. I am hoping it gets it over The Brutalist which I think might be the one. I also thought Conclave was excellent. I think some of the movies this year were just fantastic and there are new things to appreciate - for me, I discovered Sebastian Stan - and I loved The Apprentice and A Different Man. Flow was a different kind of movie without any dialogue. If we can just get away from some of the movies being made that are the same old thing done again and then again - it’s embarrassing. US has the most money and they do the most mediocre stuff.

reply

Oh, yeah. Kneecap and Crossing would both have been worthy selections.

I might like Emilia Perez more on a second viewing. This is often the case for me with Jacques Audiard films.

it’s embarrassing. US has the most money and they do the most mediocre stuff.

That's certainly true of the major Hollywood studios. I think the US indie scene does just fine though.

reply

Audiard - did you not like Read My Lips - the closest movie to Hitchcock. Or Rust and Bone. That Beat That My Heart Skipped. Paris, 13th District. And my all time favorite movie and best movie in recent history, Un Prophete. I didn’t like Dheepan that much, but it still was good.

The indie scene is great here. But there is such a divide. Actually, I think The Substance would be considered an Indie movie if it weren’t for its director. She got her movie to Cannes. I do think you have to see movies in a theater. I never realized that before but because of Covid - I now see it.

They are showing Emilia Perez next week (again) at the theater I always go to and there’s a Q&A with Zoe Saldana - it was sold out in 10 minutes. A few weeks ago, they showed it with a Q&A with Audiard and I missed that one. It kills me. It just kills me - I am five minutes away and I still can’t get in to see him. I did manage to see The Substance there and it was the most - the best - viewing experience I have ever had. And then afterward the French director Coralie Fargeat spoke on how she got Demi Moore on board - how Ray Liotta was originally cast in Dennis Quaid part - and just how they made it all in France.

reply

Yeah, I like most Audiard films, but they usually take a second viewing for me to fully appreciate them. And, even then, I don't think I like most of them as much as other people do. You're evidently a lot more of a fan that I am.

The indie scene is great. But there is such a divide.

And it appears to be increasing. I'm going to assume from what you say about Q&As at your local theatre that you live in a fairly big metropolitan area.

And that's part of that divide, isn't it? Those films don't necessarily make it out on general release any more. The multiplexes are full of Disney and Disney subsidiary stuff. And not everyone is in easy reach of an arthouse, unfortunately.

And no video stores. So when those films stream, which is how the majority of people will have access, they're often streaming on Mubi or somewhere like that, so there's less opportunity for them to crossover to a mainstream audience who are on Netflix and Paramount Plus or whatever.

It's a shame. But it is what it is. It does sometimes feel like the arthouse crowd and the multiplex crowd occupy different universes though. And that really doesn't have to be the case.

reply

I live in LA and there are a few small theaters that are bringing in the people - in droves - with the Q&A - it is phenomenal. It is the reason I am not leaving. The AMC theaters are empty. Ironically, there are three theaters located throughout the city owned by Netflix. And most of these screenings - they are often free btw and sometimes the popcorn and soda are free - are provided by Neon and A24 and Netflix. The Indie awards are near here as well. They will be happening on Feb 22 - Anora and The Substance are nominees. I just checked.

So just now at 2:01 they released free screening of Heart Eyes (Q&A with makers and cast members) for Valentine’s Day and I log on to accept at 2:07 and it’s sold out.

But yes - the divide is there. I saw more great movies at video stores than I ever did streaming. Streaming has been great for foreign TV. But there is a video rental store right near me I go to. But I belong to a lot of other stuff - like Criterion, Kanopy, all others. MHz PBS. But just going to this theater I have seen the old classics that I never bothered to see like M, The Seven Samurai, La Strada. On the actual screen for once.

reply

Did you see THIS movie?

reply

I saw it. Misguided, songs are awful, laughably bad.

Then I hear it's laughed at by every community the French straight cis white male is attempting to depict.

And I hear the dialogue in Spanish sounds like it's been put through Google translate. The yankee actresses have awful accents, as bad a Keanue Reeves English accent in Bram Stokers Dracula.

reply

Misguided? What a strange thing to say. Divisive maybe. But never misguided. .

Well, now I hope it wins just to make you crazier.

Apologies - you are not cis and this movie offends you. But it does have a transgender female in the lead - actually TWO leads, also playing a cartel boss, and no other film to date has or will come close to this achievement. IMO.

And, apologies to your ears not being able to tolerate the Spanish you are used to. It now makes sense as I can see English is your second language. And many of us, even if we can speak Spanish, are not aurally tutored to detect the accents. But just know there are many Mexican film auteurs, like Guillermo del Toro, who really liked the movie.

reply

Divisive maybe. But never misguided

It was written by a straight white cis male from France who had no background in writing a musical. In writing dialogue in Spanish. In telling a Mexican story. In telling a transgender story.

It was misguided as well as divisive.

apologies to your ears not being able to tolerate the Spanish you are used to. It now makes sense as I can see English is your second language.

Mexicans are laughing at this movie.

Guillermo del Toro, who really liked the movie.

One lovie darling ass kissing another lovie darling. They were in the same room together where he was wined and dined before a screening. He's hardly going to say it was hot dogsh!t. I wouldn't put much stock into what one lovie darling living in a high castle says to another. I'll let the real people do the talking.

https://www.netflix.com/tudum/features/guillermo-del-toro-and-jacques-audiard

You LOVE this misguided movie, and that's ok. Time to get over the fact that it's receiving backlash and just deal with it instead of trying to pick fights with random people for pointing it out.

Go fight with the Mexican community, or the trans community.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaChl7eJoEk

Awfull movie . Let us sing the lyrics:

"man to woman, from penis to vagina, Vaginoplastia! Vaginoplastia "

reply

What are you going to do with your head if this wins. Will you be ok.

Lots of straight writers/directors write/direct stories about gay love affairs (Brokeback Mountain) and vice versa. And a lot of white writers/directors write/direct movies about other people who are not white and vice versa. No one has a claim to a story.

Audiard a few years ago did a movie held in high regard called Dheepan - maybe you saw with it, hopefully not with the the same brain as you saw this movie - about a Sri Lankan refugee family living in a housing project in Paris. Any objections to that one.

reply

I'll be so happy if it wins all 13.

Then we can all wash our hands with the Oscars. It will be the final nail in the coffin.

Lots of straight writers/directors write/direct stories about gay love affairs (Brokeback Mountain) and vice versa. And a lot of white writers/directors write/direct movies about other people who are not white and vice versa. No one has a claim to a story.

But the difference is, they did it well. This cis straight white French man filming in France with Yankee actresses didn't do it well. He missed the mark.

Audiard a few years ago did a movie held in high regard called Dheepan

Now you're talking about another movie? Stay on topic.

This god awful movie his being heavily criticised from all angles. I'm just pointing it out.

Go argue with the trans, or Mexican community.

reply

European "cis" white men are allowed to make films in and about Mexico, sorry. If you don't like it, feel free to petition the Mexican government to only allow films made by gay black Mexicans.

reply

So you're complaining that they nominated this film simply because it's gay, and your solution is to nominate a different film simply because its gay? LMAO. Talk about drawing the wrong conclusions.

reply

You're jumping to conclusions without asking questions.

I said:

"Queer, or Challengers would have been the pick."

And my opinion is they are far superior movies to "Emilio Estevez" or whatever it's called.

2 films that could definitely sit with the best of the year, gay or not.

But they were both snubbed for this travesty.

Except, this travesty pulled the trans card out, and Hollyweird love to give token votes.

And they gave it 13 Oscar noms!!!!!!!

reply

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/movies/oscar-nominations-emilia-perez-brutalist-wicked.html

Even the New York Times leads off their article with, "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences showered little-seen movies rooted in progressive politics with nominations for the 97th Oscars on Thursday."

reply

😆👍

reply

RT does NOT rate movies!

reply

So what does the 27% refer to? Just a number they put on there for style or something?

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/emilia_perez

reply

27% of people would recommend watching it.

The numbers on rotten tomatoes are based on recommendations, if 10 critics review and rate it and 9 of those rate it positively it will get a recommendation score of 90%. It’s not like IMDb where films are given scores on a 1 to 10 rating based system and you see the actual average.

reply

The 27% recommendation rate is still a score

reply

If 10 people review it positively and recommend it, but they all give it a 6 out of 10. It will get still get a 100% recommendation score.

It doesn’t use a traditional grading scale like IMDb where if those same 10 people gave it a 6 out of 10, it would have a 6 out of 10 rating.

reply

OK, so you can say that you don't like the way that RT creates those scores. But it's still a score

Some reviewers will review movies and rate them on a scale of 1-10, others will give a 0-5 star rating, and some will just give a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. The RT score is the equivalent of aggregating the percentage of people who give a thumbs up to a movie

reply

the Oscars have been a joke for so many years,
don't they nom like 10 movies for best pic nowadays?
how big of a pool of contenders need there be? dilution overkill
remember you cannot even be considered for a nomination unless the production qualifies with a minimum amount of women, blacks, gays

reply

Wait, I thought the awards were all based on merit??!!

reply

😆

reply

you cannot even be considered for a nomination unless the production qualifies with a minimum amount of women, blacks, gays

This one is nothing but.

I don't think the Oscar these days is about being a good movie or not, it is more about being the "right" sort of movie, so I think this movie will win at least a few.

reply

The RT number has dropped down to 27 ... roughly the same number of viewers who will be watching the Oscars this year.

reply

That is spooky! 😧

reply

I just watched it. I was mostly entertained, although it runs a little long. Worthy of 13 Oscar nominations? Nah.

Do the Mexican and transgender communities have a point? Possibly. Although I'd suggest it's no more supposed to be set in a realistic Mexico than The Sound of Music is really about Austria or Dancer in the Dark is really supposed to be the USA. They're movies. Made by outsiders. As Guillermo del Toro says of Emila Perez, it creates its own universe. That's what movies can do. However, I accept the complaints may be valid when viewed through a certain prism.

Is it worthy of the bandwagon-jumping social media criticism it has been subjected to (in part, by people who either haven't seen it or made up their mind about it before seeing it so that they could have the 'right' opinion on Twitter)?

Also: nah.

It's OK. But it's only OK.

reply

The Academy Awards have meant nothing for several years. This is the final nail in their coffin, although they will undoubtedly keep staggering along like a zombie.

reply

It probably got that many nominations because the Academy wanted to troll President Trump.

reply
