Action, nonstop action, slow paced?
How can anybody compare this classic with Cobbbrrrraaaa.
It’s not on Criterion now.
I first saw her in Jamon Jamon. I loved Volver. I did see the strange one called Don’t Move that was in Italian actually. That one was kind of haunting.
But maybe you’re right because there have been very few people who are able to make the same movie twice in the same role - in her case, one in Spanish and one in English so you can compare. I don’t think I liked Vanilla Sky. I am not sure this was a movie to measure any performance as it just wasn’t really that good. Woman On Top was okay. I guess I just never really noticed that there was a disparity between a performance she did in either Spanish, English, or Italian. Whereas I have noticed this for a lot of other international stars when they make American movies. Some just don’t translate. Isabelle Huppert for example. One of the greatest actresses living and some of her movies where she speaks English aren’t that good. Earlier ones with Catherine Deneuve as well (Hustle in particular) - and this is the actress I most love. There’s a beginning, middle and now with Deneuve.
You’ll go crazy over Adele H., no pun intended. It’s a great movie. Adjani is mesmerizing.
Penelope Cruz was great in both Spanish and English movies. One of my favorites was Vicky Cristina Barcelona where she speaks both languages in the same breath.
Ashley was one of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the screen. And an unbelievable and fearless actress. When I think of how many say Demi Moore was brave to do The Substance, I think Judd (and Michael Shannon) were brave to do Bug. And then sometimes I wonder if Judd had been able to make the movies I heard about where she was being considered and wonder if Weinstein did screw up her career and even her chance for an Oscar.
But don’t you think it was because it was in English - a second language for Adjani or maybe a third.
Honestly, why even watch this one. Watch the real one by Clouzot. Les Diaboliques, released as Diabolique - 1955. With Simone Signoret and wife Vera. Hitchcock lost out to Clouzot on this one. He really wanted to make it.
And stick with Adjani for Queen Margot, One Deadly Summer, Story of Adele H., Camille Claudel, Deadly Circuit, Quartet. And call it a day.
I loved Boogie Nights.
If all you saw was that HBO documentary and never read the court case files, and interviews with the other adopted children (especially Moses), not to mention the comprehensive investigation with Dylan’s teachers, psychologists, police and especially the statements of the Farrow staff and NY Times reporting and Dylan herself AT the time, then yes to what you say.
She’s an excellent British actress. She was in Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and The Town and Red Riding Hood: 1983 - and so many more really good films.
I know. I was being facetious. Ashley was great in this btw. Sorvino was also in Replacement Killers. So those two movies after the, poof, Oscar movie.
