Solid Alien entry let down by woke and misguided fan-service

The plot and world-building are great, then we meet the characters. Spaeny’s Ripley rip-off is likeable and Andy her android brother is sympathetic. The other characters though are all various degrees of annoying, compare this to the memorable characters in Aliens. Even Hudson - an annoying jerk - is awesome.

This lot were obnoxious, and of course the one straight white male was an evil asshole, constantly bullying the loveable negro android 🤦🏻‍♂️

Fede Alvarez also inserts pro-illegal immigration propaganda with our ‘heroes’ a bunch of young people from a miserable ‘third world’ existence who want to make it to the promised planet. Of course, none of them are the violent criminals and rapists that account for all too many contemporary illegal immigrants, and the film doesn’t show how flooding into a better world ends up destroying that world as we’re seeing in the West.

What almost tanks the whole film is the woefully bad CGI used to resurrect a familiar face from the Alien world. In a film that does many things right, especially when it comes to visuals, I cannot believe how badly they dropped the ball here. It rips you right out of the movie.

Forcing in ‘get away from her you bitch!’ is another painfully misjudged attempt at fan ‘service’ (which will likely only irritate fans)

I appreciated some linkage to Prometheus and Covenant as those (better) films needed some kind of bridge to the Alien saga. It was a bit forced but I was happy to see it. Say what you want about Ridley’s prequels, they at least allow for some invention in a franchise whose main beast has been done to death. The hideous new birth at the end was compelling in its horrific novelty.

Action scenes are done really well, and the film finds new ways to make the aliens menacing. Crawling through acid blood globules in zero-G was inspired.

I give the film 6.5/10, it’s better than Resurrection and the awful AvP films. If you’re going to watch it, make sure you don’t pay for it - never fund woke.

reply

6.5/10??? That's way too generous.

reply

Perhaps, but there was some good stuff amongst the slop. You could do a hell of a lot worse (AvP: Requiem?)

It was a competently made slice of space horror.

reply

AVP: REQUIEM had promise, but it was just too damn dark to see anything

reply

I don’t mean to correct you, but I work in a robotics laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, and the proper term for a negro android is “negroid”.

reply

I know, I spotted that opportunity as I wrote it but the review was already getting long. I’ll be referring to Andy as a negroid going forwards.

reply

Lol, poor old Andy.

reply

Yeah, poor Negroid.

reply

Yeah poor racist queers

reply

Andy was a racist, gay android?

reply

In some parts of the world, they call them Anggers.

reply

Not sure what you're on about with the pro-immigration and racial stuff. I guess it's impossible to cast more than a few non-whites without the right labeling it as woke? There was basically zero political bias in this film.

But I agree that the references were the weakest part of the film. I was loving it until they forced in the ‘get away from her you bitch!’ line; that one moment tanked the film for a solid minute or two. I was pissed. Like, yes, we get it, we've seen Aliens, we get it! Additionally, they used Ian Holm robot WAY too often; he's practically a main character by the end, and he should've been used for maybe one brief scene.

🤣 Some of the shittest gaslighting I’ve seen, Skavau-level, very weak.

Skavau, show everyone what I’m talking about (use tons of straw)…

reply

"Fellas, is it woke to depict poor space colonists as anything but would-be murderers and thieves"?

By Melton's logic, any and all films and series that focus on poor immigrants or even just portray them at all that don't have them going on a crime spree are "propaganda".

>Skavau, show everyone what I’m talking about…

Typical childish editing as usual from you as you continue to be too stupid to address any points.

reply

There are no points to address in that mess that stupid incel bitch posted. Butthurt much?

reply

Skavau is always ‘butthurt’ because he’s an insatiable bottom, but can you guys flirt elsewhere? Trying to discuss Alien here…

reply

Fair enough, but I'm so sick of lame, out-of-shape losers who start crying woke every time they see a woman on screen. They are almost always racist too, because they in fact have issues with themselves.

reply

Melton spends most of his life obsessing over 'woke'. It's unbelievably pathetic.

reply

Get a room you two 🤦🏻‍♂️

reply

It's time we stop trying to reason with these incel fundamentalist snowflakes. They will loudly start crying anytime they see someone who is not pink, and male. They think their racist cultist worldview amounts to something but it doesn't.

reply

Come on, dude, you wanna flirt with guys do it elsewhere, this is a movie discussion thread. Capiche?

reply

I'm not the incel who calls women sour grapes smh

reply

What the hell are you talking about?

reply

Yeah, the OP is a weak moron.

reply

No guessing which position you’ll be taking in your threesome with Skavau and mrbnk, your name says it all…

reply

I was loving it until they forced in the ‘get away from her you bitch!’ line
They also borrowed the Ian Holm "You have my sympathies" line.

reply

That was painful. The ‘fan service’ callbacks cost the film a whole star.

reply

the white female heroin and her black male foil IS fucking woke you dumb fuck. that's the trope. it's in so many movies and shows right now.

reply

Because of gender and skin color??? LOL. So if they were two white males, you'd have no issues? Hmm, telling.

reply

Say what you want about Ridley’s prequels, they at least allow for some invention in a franchise whose main beast has been done to death.

Absolutely correct!!

Fede could have tried to explore those areas since anyway this was a standalone movie.

reply

Well he sort of does toward the end.

reply

Oh really?.....Great then!

I'm curiously waiting for 23rd - the day its releasing in my country.

reply

The trick with the way-too-wonky CGI used on the Rook (i.e. Ash duplicate) robot is that, as soon as this comes out on video, deepfake artists will easily be able to do a MUCH better job with it. You can see how well they have done making better versions of Tarkin from "Rogue One," Luke from "The Mandalorian," etc.

reply

Yep. I even wonder if they’ll officially re-do it on home release after enough people complain. It’s distractingly awful.

reply

i concur........

i might download this motherfucker ... some rainy day in the future.

then again, the thought of british cunt accents....... uhhhh, *shivers*

reply

The best characters in Alien had Brit accents (Kane and Ash) but they were ‘well spoken’, this lot are Gen-Z chavs with ‘urban’ London accents which are always annoying.

reply

yes....... the sudden scottish accents in one of the new star wars movies was also so fucking stupid.it takes you right out of the illusion.

how the fuck does a scotsman make it to a galaxy far far away..... facepalm

reply

That sounds ridiculous.

I remember it being weird that Anakin is ‘American’, but when Luke pulls off his Vader mask as he’s dying Anakin has somehow become a crusty old English gent. And of course when he’s in Vader mode he has the voice of a robust African-American man.

reply

here is the clip from force awakens......

man this is so ridiculous !!

reply

Oh yeah, how do they dare have accents in a huge galaxy?

Everyone knows that a galactic civilization with multiple species should talk the same language with zero alterations, aka accents.

reply

To me, the film commits perhaps the greatest sin a movie can commit: It is boring. As the movie droned on in the first and second acts, I kept asking myself, "Why is this film so DULL? Why am I bored during an Alien movie?" A film can have many faults, but still be entertaining. This film, rather, is great on a technical level but fails on the script level. The story is simply not interesting.

You said that it's better than Resurrection and the AvP films. I actually think that Resurrection is an under-appreciated entry in the franchise and is a much more interesting film than A:R is. And furthermore, I find the first AvP movie to be an entertaining popcorn film, even if it's disappointing as the film that finally brings the aliens and predators together in a single movie. I would agree, though, that Romulus is better than Requiem.

reply

Space movies about humans colonizing other planets is about as Pro-Illegal Immigration as one can get. Just because your white ass thinks that all illegal aliens are ONLY POC doesn't change that.

reply

An obnoxious and moronic post, and an interesting self-report with the notion that illegal immigrants are ‘ONLY POC’ - in the film the most irritating migrant is the white male.

Grow a brain before trying to comment.

reply

I stand by my words, you brainless twat!

reply

I’m sure you do.

Welp, looks like we’ve found another Sister…
