At its heart Zodiac is about The Boogeyman - the mysterious monster who lives on the fringes of our collective imagination, the dark figure you see in the shadows in the hallway at night but when you turn on the light there’s nothing there, it’s the blank space that your mind has evolved to fill with horrors to protect you from a potential threat.
It’s called The Hurdy Gurdy Man in the film, brilliantly captured in that haunting song.
The genius of the film is that it draws you in with the real life case of the Zodiac killer, it’s a realistic nuts and bolts police procedural, but it’s really about the endless failure of that investigation to find the killer, and how the persistent lack of closure drives various men to madness and ruin.
We’re so close at the end, the first victim is 8/10 certain it’s Lee, Graysmith is convinced, but Lee has since died and subsequent DNA tests let him off the hook. The Boogeyman lives in that space between 8/10 and 10/10 and it looks like we’ll never be able to close that gap and lock him away.

Yeah it’s a very entertaining latter-day Friedkin, with his trademark cold, cruel universe full of shocking moments and a typically blistering third act. It also had a great sense of black humour.
Worked just fine for me. I saw it as a twisted black comedy. Didn’t mind that it occasionally stretched credulity to go down some absurd alleyways.
