Romulus or Covenant sequel or Blomkamp's Aliens sequel?

Theoretical question (as the choice already been made for you) but what would you haven chosen for this years Alien movie ?

-Alien Romulus that we getting from Evil Dead remake guy starring Gen Zs

-The 3rd Alien prequel (directed by Ridley instead of Gladiator 2, starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterstone. full on HR Giger, Planet of the Aliens, David as xenomorph king vs Waterstones Ripley-esque survivor, potential space marine stuff, potential tie in to the Derelict LV426, etc)

-Blomkamp's Aliens sequel/alt Alien3 titled 'Alien Awakening' (starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, and Juno Temple as Newt) With A3/4 explained away either as cryo dreams, alternate timeline, or just ignored Halloween style (maybe 'Awakening' suggests dreams?)

id have gone with Ridleys prequel #3 (then Blomkamps Aliens sequel, and lastly Romulus)

1. Covenant Sequel will be the most anticipated one, because it's intriguing & fresh new storyline which also offers different Xeno variations, themes & explores the Space-jockey universe.

2. Alien: Romulus, because it's from Fede after all!

3. Blomkamp's Aliens Sequel could have been my No.2 because it could offer much more creativity than just outright horror/action, but we don't know much details.

I thought one of the most fascinating takes on aliens and predators alike was the rage wars trilogy - https://avp.fandom.com/wiki/The_Rage_War_trilogy

It was genuinely unique - provided many answers - was hard to put down (though I was listening to the audiobook version).
Time and time again, I find the unofficial sequels or spin-offs to be by far superior to the 'canon' BS they keep filming. It all tells me that there are some great writers out there - same goes for Star Wars and Star Trek next gen (I read sequel novels for both), but for whichever reason, hollywood keeps picking the worst of the worst for the 'canon' shit. Perhaps those hollywood writers are related to the producers?

These days, you can and probably should ignore all of the 'canon' sequels and head straight for the sequel novels, if you want quality and a genuine return to the characters from the original films/series.

Change a few things and Romulus couldve probably been prequel #3 (and same cast and cost the same)

Spoilers - Gen Z crew finding the Covenant in deep space instead of Romulus station, Fassbender/David instead of Holm, add some Engineers

yeah. that was back of my brain the whole time watching this. since Scott was involved i wondered if these wernt some of his unused ideas.

Alien: Romulus 100%. Finally a great Alien film again, it’s only taken Hollywood nearly 40 years to achieve that.

Prometheus didn’t live up to the hype, I was so excited for it especially with Ridley returning. Covenant is even worse and one of the worst films in the franchise so another film with David is a big no from me.

Blomkamp’s films after District 9 have all ranged from mediocre to bad so I don’t know if he’s got it in him to make a great Aliens sequel. Also I don’t want to see old woman Ripley same as I don’t want to see old man Indiana Jones, these characters aren’t Rocky, I don’t want to see them in their twilight years.

She doesn't look that old, actually

Indiana jones, on the other hand - lol - that was pretty fucking embarrassing.

Otherwise, yes, Blomkamp's record has been rather dodgy in the writing department - though I do appreciate him always trying to message how corporations always fuck things up - and this series is kinda all about that - so right up his alley.

Blomkamp's Alien 3.

Given how awesome his short "Rakka" was I would vote for Blomkamp, if he can manage to not fuck it up.

Romulus is really the only direction this franchise needs to go in. Ridley Scott has no idea what he’s doing with his own property. Blompkamp’s Alien ideas sounded really interesting and he’s a great visual director with a style that would fit Alien well, but I’m SICK of “direct sequels” where the filmmakers cherry pick and choose which films are now canon and which aren’t. Look how it’s fucked up the Terminator movies. So Romulus is definitely the best choice.

Itd be a risk going with Blomkamp but like someone said here he does specialise in doing Company/Alien type universe stuff well (and looks good) so maybe it'd have been OK (and not killed off Hicks/Newt this time, until the end anyway)

reply

exactly. retconning previous films is no way forward. terminator made that clear. and hey, how bout them highlander films lmao. if ya bungled the timeline, just stay the hell away from those story threads. there's no need to ever address what came of the events of Alien 3 & 4. that said, there was definitely a window for Blomphamp's ideas, but that ship is long sailed.

as much as i'd like to see Ridley finish his new trilogy, i don't think we need it. ya can pretty much guess what plays out in the story by the closing scenes of Covenant. david's going to continue his experiments until he seeds the universe with the xenos. all that's left to wonder is if it's by design or accident that they escape.

Romulus was the right direction at the right time and functions perfectly as a soft reboot. celebrate the franchise for what its done, reset the status quo for moving forward.
