Chalamet Is Extremely Unconvincing

How are we supposed to take this guy seriously? He’s like a 120 pounds, short, and somehow has hair that looks like he just got out of a beauty salon in the middle of the desert. And this guy is somehow the biggest badass in the world. Also, the times in the movie when he got angry was horrible acting. I almost burst out laughing, it was so bad.

reply

Actually, I thought he did a good job. I could feel his reluctance to become a religious leader while still wanting revenge on the Harkonnens.

Keep in mind, in the book Paul is 15 years old when the Harkonnen's attack the Atreides. He's only a few year's older when the denouement occurs and he kills Feyd Ruatha. He should be slim and small in stature: he is not a grown man.

He was terrible as usual and you’re just proving my point further

This is certainly a non sequitur answer. You are under no obligation to agree with me, nor I with you. De gustibus non disputandem est.

Note: Never waste time talking to Mr Movie. He has no ears and nothing between. See, I can do ad hominem posts as well. And they have as much validity as yours. This discussion is over.

Maybe you like your teen boys to be slender but Luke Littler, the teenage darts sensation - who just turned seventeen, is as portly as any great darts star should be.

Therefore your equation of age and girth is deeply flawed.

reply

I don't believe I said he had to be slim. But that is certainly how I have always pictured him, and I first read Dune more than 40 years ago. In any case, he is not a full grown man. Of the three actors who have portrayed Paul, Chalomet certainly looks closest to the correct age.

That takes a couple of years, here he defeats him within a few months. His baby sister isn't even born yet.

reply

Yes, they compressed the time line. But even under the original, Paul is less than 20 years old at eh end of the novel, Dune. Alia is around 3 or 4 or so at the Dune. Paul is 14 at the beginning. At most, Paul would be 19, more likely 18 at the climax of the novel.

Haven't seen Dune, but from what I have seen him in, this is a pretty good description of his acting overall: unconvincing. I've never been truly convinced that he is the character he's playing in anything he's been in and, the more he's trying in a role, the less convincing he is. I think that's why he didn't totally fail as Wonka - the role didn't call for him to do anything difficult and to let the songs carry the role, and they did.

reply

"Chalamet Is Extremely Unconvincing"

Yep. Here, we're expected to believe that he's not only heterosexual, but appealing enough to get into Zendaya's panties

reply

But today, young women have been taught that traditionally masculine men are "toxic" and are all monstrous rapists and abusers. The young chicks actually prefer the girly-boys.

reply

There's always been a market for androgynous fellas, going all the way back to Rudolpho Valentino

reply

Actually, as someone who is generally disappointed with most of the performances in the movie, I thought Chalamet did well given the material he's got. I mean, it's an impossible role to play: a boy-messiah-god-conqueror. It's rediculous. And I think he did his best, so I'd give him a break. It's Zendaya who's just terrible.

reply

Not a big fan of Chalamet but I agree with your assessment that it's not an easy role to play. That it needs to be someone with a young appearance makes it a hard role to cast someone for as well.

Also in agreement that Zendaya is awful. Seriously the only thing she has going for herself is having a single name that stands out and makes her marketable because she sucks as an actress.

reply

She looks like a 12-year-old southern Californian that was abducted on her way to a Venice film festival and dumped on an alien world against her will. Nothing could convince me she was Chani.

Chani was a human woman born and raised on Dune. She'd never known any other life besides the desert, fighting the Harkonnens, either evading or riding sandworms, conserving water, and a follower of her people's faith. The concept of questioning any of that would have never entered her mind. A life like that causes most Fremen to grow up and mature really fast, simply as a survival trait. (One way this was demonstrated in the '84 film was to show two Fremen boys who looked roughly 12 years old fighting alongside the full-grown men). Chani was supposed to be brave, strong, intelligent, very mature, loyal to those she cared about, and deeply spiritual.

Zendaya is none of those things. She is a permanently petulant child and it shows.

reply

I concur. She was the worst part of the film for me, both because of the quality of Zendaya's acting and how much the character deviated from the version of Chani in the books.

reply

And if the people who made this film think she would have been a draw for the younger audiences, they are sorely mistaken. She may have been "popular" on social media at one time, but her popularity has been fading fast since the end of her "Spider-Man" films. Plus, this kind of sci-fi genre doesn't appeal to Gen Z or Gen Alpha very much. Most of them are stupid and have the attention span of toddlers, incapable of enjoying this complex a level of storytelling.

reply

I definitely don't see the appeal in her. From what I understand her biggest achievement is finding a marketing team that was able to frame her as "Zendaya" (last name omitted) like she is exotic and interesting and not another walking cliche coming out of California's Bay Area. That gimmick is all she has going for her.

reply

If an exotic name is the only card she has in the game, I suspect that, unless she can get into modeling or become an influencer for companies that sell products, her career is gonna fizzle out fast. Trying to push a brand in Hollyweird with no real talent or work ethic to back it up isn't gonna take you very far. Plus, being female, her shelf life as an actress will fizzle out fast once she hits her late 30s unless she can frown and scowl her way through playing older, background characters.

reply

I wouldn't be surprised to see her transition from movies to being a "social media influencer" celebrity along the lines of someone like Selena Gomez but I certainly wouldn't be sad if she faded from the spotlight completely.

reply

I actually would be happy if she did. Nobody will miss her and I never considered her worth looking into beyond what little she did.

reply

Seeing Chalamet in the role, I have to laugh now when I recall that I thought Kyle MacLachlan was too much of an effeminate prettyboy to play Atreides in the 1984 version.
Chalamet makes MacLachlan look like Charles Bronson.

reply

Actual lol, and oh so true.

reply

Now I see that MacLachlan's casting was perfect one. He was convincing both as an inexperienced novice, and later as the Fremen leader. He had the gravitas.

reply

Yes, he actually did an excellent job, and was very convincing as the son of a ruler turned messiah. Back then, though, he looked kind of wimpy compared to other actors his age. When I saw the film at the theater in 84, I remember thinking someone like Lance Guest from The Last Starfighter or even Tom Cruise would have been better.

reply

LOL, like what? MacLachlan's acting was terrible in Dune, and so were many of his costars. He was stiff as a board and never heard of word subtlety. Plus, he looked as bland as the guy next door getting mail. It is like the producer just said, "Get me the dude that looks like Luke Skywalker." I think people are in denial how bad the 1984 version is. Look at the scene below. After Paul said "silence," Siân Phillips' acting is literally me with 3 months of acting lessons. And don't get me started on the fight scene.

Villeneuve's vision is light years ahead in cinematography, choreography, cast, etc. There is a reason Lynch isn't even willing to talk about his version and Villeneuve happily talks about his all the time.

reply

yeah, but around 1:22 the way he says "silence", and the look in those eyes, wow! that is waaay better than the way the new one does the whole "silence" scene imo.

check this comparison. the new dune is literally nothing compared to the old one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju4cfbL2vao

no comparison. new one doesn't even show Paul's blue eyes. the new one is more of a joke like the adventures of simpman and his sidekick soyboy

reply

The eyes seriously? All I see is stiff acting. "I can kill you with a word..." The forced anger with the rigid script, it was almost like the whole thing was made for stage theater.

Chalamet wasn't the best either, but he at least organically captures both anger and vulnerability. Look at the Gom Jabbar scene in the 1984 version and how forced the pain acting is. MacLachlan is like a computer working with 0s and 1s. There is no subtlety.

reply

Lol Charles Bronson! 😆

reply

He definetly reeks of the edgy theatre kid who thinks he's going for his Oscar but is actually just going for a viral TikTok.

reply

He receives a fair amount of detailed description beginning in the first chapter of the novel, and is described as having a small build, with black hair, "an oval face", "long lashes", "thin nose", and a strong bone structure.

In all of these respects, Paul Atreides looks nearly picture-perfect in the film, looking every bit the offspring of both Lady Jessica with her oval face and Leto I with his sharp features. His stringy lankiness appropriately sets him apart from the heavier set Arrakeen natives.

reply

Literally nothing to do with what I said

reply

I think the only time I found Chalamet truly unconvincing was when he had to deliver his "rousing speech" and he did the usual thing people do when they don't have a commanding presence, merely shout their lines to mask their weakness.

Other than that I felt his performance was in line with the way the character was written for this particular movie.
