It's a solid theory and I agree that if they made it to land he was intelligent enough to evade authorities and stay a ghost for the rest of his life.
But........ it's the making it to land part I have doubts about. I've been to Alcatraz. Those currents are no joke and would be very difficult to beat, smart or not. It would have been very hard to stay on course with a life raft, especially a makeshift one made out of raincoats and held together with rubber cement. The city looks so close from the island, it's right there! Once you get in the water though, it's a different story.
They were all physically fit and intelligent, but they were also desperate and willing to die trying. It's nice to think they made it, but I just don't know.
It's a cool story and a great movie either way.
