Yes, he was the best written character and the most intersting/multi-layered of the film, which was quite unexpected.

Exactly. What worked in the 80s doesn't necessarily work today. Prosthetic noses worked back in the day. But in modern day they just come across hoaky. But if we're being honest ever since Marvel made the choice to turn Thor goofy, I feel this is just how Hemsworth plays every character.
It's also a bit of a contrast that Joy is playing her role super serious while Chris is tapping into his goofy Thor schtick.
Yes, there's a tonal clash. These 2 new Mad Max movies are not made tongue in cheek.
It's a performance that would work better in Deadpool.

That's what was so great about it. The Mad Max franchise in general has been a bit ham fisted.

We're talking about a movie with characters like Scarbrous Scrotus and Rictus Erectus.

He was fantastic. The makeup and costume rendered him unrecognizable, and he played the part so differently than any he has in the past. He's clearly capable of a lot more than he's been given to date.
