reasons why it flopped

mad max is a niche franchise
chris hemsworth is box office poison
anya taylor joy is not a star
fans wanted a mad max centered film
joe biden killed cinema
prequels rarely work
it will be streaming in 3 weeks

reply

Hollywood really needs to do something with those streamings. Why do they give their movies to them in 3 weeks is beyond me. This is the main reason movies flop now.

I wanted to go to Fall Guy. But then it flopped and I thought maybe it's not as good. But I was still considering to maybe go. And then bam - it's already on streamings. So that settled my dilemma. Why would I pay when I can watch it for free.

I used to go to movie theaters often. Because it took forever for movie to come to dvd, in like 4 months. All the hype would die down by that time. Now they come 2-3 weeks after and I stopped going. This is why big budget movies flop.

Eventually they will just stop making them. And all movies will be low budget crap with tv like quality. And boring.

reply

You should add Runtime.

I wanted to go to Furiosa. And then I saw Running time is 148 minutes. And it will be exhausting to spend 2.5 hours in that world. So no, thanks.

The Fall Guy 126 minutes. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is 145 minutes.

reply

The two main reasons they make films regardless that they flop.

A.) Write Off
B.) Money Laundering

reply

Fury Road got away with the woke bait-and-switch by marketing as a Mad Max film and then pivoting to girl-boss Furiosa mid-film, and this all happened just when woke was starting to infect cinema.

This time around we’ve seen it all before, and they’re being explicit about it being a Furiosa film, so of course nobody wants to see more tedious woke garbage.

Quality is inversely proportional to woke. As woke goes up, quality goes down, and sure enough we saw lots of CGI in that trailer. Miller and the studio were more interested in woke messaging than making a good film, they got lazy, greedy and dumb.

All Miller had to do was make a proper Mad Max film, and keep Furiosa as a side character, and the studio would be rolling in money. Instead they went woke, so now they’ll go broke 🤷🏻‍♂️

reply

Because people dont want to see a 90lb woman beating the shit out of guys. It isn't even slightly realistic.

reply

Do sci-fi action movies have to be realistic? There have been lots of unrealistic things in movies for years.

reply

Yes, sci-fi action movies have to be realistic to the extent of basic physics and human biology, unless an explanation is given like genetic modifications or super soldier serum.

reply

I don't think most fans of sci-fi action movies care that much about realism. I doubt people avoided seeing this because they thought women can't beat up men.

reply

They do when realism is constantly being sacrificed in service of the same patronising and divisive political ideology.

reply

What political ideology specifically is there in this movie?

reply

So a woman being a "girl boss" is political ideology?

reply

You’re either being wilfully dumb or you’re just plain dumb. Either way re-read the linked post.

reply

I read it. It does not answer my original question: What political ideology specifically is there in this movie?

reply

To be fair Furiosa doesn't beat the shit out of any guys in this. It's not like the Mad Max movies are aiming for 100% realism anyway.

reply

Prequels without the original cast don’t do as well at the box office. Solo: A Star Wars story flopped and the Hunger Games prequel didn’t make anywhere near as much as the Jennifer Lawrence Hunger Games films. Fantastic Beasts had about 5 films planned but they’ve stopped at number 3 as the box office returns weren’t as good as the Harry Potter films.

This was always going to flop but it’s a shame it has done as it’s one of the best film prequels I’ve ever seen.

Hopefully we can still get a Mad Max film with Tom Hardy because the world-building George Miller is doing here is fantastic.

reply

I mentioned this in another post ,but I think spending 168 million on a prequel was bad idea. Road Warrior and Thunderdome was made on shoestring budgets of 4 million and 10 million. I think movies are becoming was too expensive Gladiator 2 costing 310 million, Twisters costing 200 million and Joker 2 costing 200 million when the first one cost 55 million to make. Even Fury Road was too expensive costing 185 million and barely broke even earning 380 million worldwide.

reply

Too much time went by between Fury Road and Furiosa (little over 9 years).

Fury Road was not a huge success to begin with (380M worldwide), nor did it leave any loose stuff that had to be resolved/explained in another installment.

Trailers looked too similar to Fury Road and initial critics-word of mouth said it was a solid movie, but also mentioned Fury Road was superior... Dementus looks (exactly) like a less ugly version of Immortan Joe

Fury Road also barely had any story though... it's a 2 hour chase (masterpiece).

I know its a prequel and Miller said he doesn't like the deaging effect, but Charlize IS Furiosa.

reply

I think it's easy to write off Fury Road as just a long chase scene with no story....but the story-telling builds throughout the movie, as does the world-building. We learn about new places (like The Green Place)....new communities....new characters...who they are and why. We learn a little about what drives Furiosa, but need more (hence, it's nice to get the Furiosa movie). George Miller is all about world-building....and that is what he's doing.

As great as The Road Warrior was (to me, it's still the best)....we get far less story, world-building or even dialogue in that one than we do with the latest 2 films in the franchise. Story isn't the issue....and people need to quit whining about CGI (there was plenty in The Lord of the Rings and The Avengers...parts 1-10, but people never whine about those). The issue is that lazy, cheap assholes refuse to leave their homes and do something social, like patronize a theater...and that is why a great film like Furiosa will underperform. That is also why....in 5 years, you probably won't ever again have a movie theater to go to.

People can just stay in their houses and never go out for anything.

reply

Malarkey. People aren't going to the theater because it is expensive and they have better things to spend money on. Furiosa is another Sequel, Prequel, remake, reboot, flick surrounded by others. It's very long. At 148 minutes, that's a massive time commitment, especially for parents.

It's not laziness, it's a lack of interest and economics. Shit, I went to a movie every week this year and gave up. It's been a terrible year for movies... again.

reply

"Shit, I went to a movie every week this year and gave up. It's been a terrible year for movies... again."

Don't you want to still have that OPTION...to go catch a great flick at the theater, maybe for date night....maybe after a good meal somewhere? Eventually....(it's dying FAST)....you won't even have the option. I give it 3-5 years, before movie theaters die off the way record stores did.

And people who stay home to stream will be the reason.

And stop blaming the quality of films. There are plenty of quality films coming out....but to empty fucking movie houses.

"In the Land of Saints and Sinners"......."Land of Bad"....."Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes"....."Oppenheimer"....heck, even the latest Mission Impossible movie was really good. But people just shrug when these movies hit the theater and say they'll wait to watch it at home. The Friday opening of a movie is no longer an event at all.

Home.

People do college from home....shop from home....get their meals delivered to their home....watch their movies from home....download music from home....play games and sports online, from home....exercise at home.....

Fuck progress. People are regressing into pasty little hermits.

Yeah I think a lot of cinemas will close down in the next few years unfortunately, I want to stay optimistic but it’s not looking good.

I saw Dune Part Two in IMAX and it was one of the best cinema experiences of my life. I fear by the time Dune Part Three comes out the cinemas will all be gone and I’ll be watching it on my TV instead.

reply

No there aren’t, entire genres have died like the mid-budget thriller, and comedies (thanks to woke). In the 90’s Hollywood would churn out several classics every year, now you’d be hard pressed to find one classic film in a decade.

The theater industry will change. I have a theater I built in my basement. I can easily recreate the experience. You may not like that, but I do. It doesn't stop me from going out. I just don't need the theater.

As quality, yes the quality has dropped. You bring up a few exceptions, but they don't make up for months of awful movies like ISS, Founder's Day, Argyle, The First Imen (the writing g failed that one), etc... I waded through a lot of bad movies this year. Some even called amazing by critics only to be awful experiences. I Don blame people for not going because everything looks great... but there's very little soul due to poor writing.

I don't care if it ends all together. I can walk in the park instead. Movies are a passtime, not life.

Cinema may go the way of opera, theater, and poetry... into the dustbin of history (except for MAYBE an ever shrinking urban elite).

reply

It already is.
