Would you rank him among comedy legends like Chaplin, Groucho and Peter Sellers?

Also, do you think many years after he's dead, people will put him in the same category of those?

reply

I think he is one of the funniest actors to ever grace the big screen. He made me laugh more than anyone. Just because he has a couple of demons doesn't change that one bit. So yes.

reply

people pretend (because of his political views) that they didn't piss their pants watching his films.

can't say what a legend is etc. i wouldn't put him in a label
but he is definitely one of the greats.

reply

I think too many people look at him as the guy who does funny faces. I think he's great at physical slapstick.

reply

Hell, no. Carrey had a couple of excellent movies (The Truman Show, Man on the Moon), nothing close to Chaplin's filmography. Besides acting, Chaplin also produced, directed and composed.

reply

No. Comedy-wise he’s a one trick pony. He’s decent but not great in serious and semi-comedy roles.

reply

Just like Chaplin, Groucho and Peter Sellers

reply

Closer to Sellers than the other two.

reply

I don't know about Chaplin or Groucho. I haven't seen anything but short clips of them. As much as Carrey turned into a liberal fruitcake, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy him at his comedic best, I do own a few of his movies, he was the top comedic star for several years. Not quite to the level of Sellers, though.

reply

I didn't realize until recently that I owned quite a few of his movies. I don't think I was giving him enough credit.

reply

I don't see him as a legend, but more like Jerry Lewis. He had a strong peak, some great performances, but eventually fizzled out.

reply

Jerry Lewis is a legend

reply

He had some funny skits on In Living Color/SNL but like Carrey, didn't age very well. Ace Ventura/Dumb & Dumber was his peak. His other comedies like The Mask, The Cable Guy, Liar Liar, Man in the Moon, Grinch were worth a "B" grade at the most.

In short, Jim Carrey made some very good funny movies in the mid 90's. However, anything past 1998 have been mostly forgettable. Mr. Poppers is a hate crime for which charges should have been filed.

reply

My favourite film of his is Eternal Sunshine in 2004. But I agree that the last little while he hasn't done many memorable ones.

reply

Man on the Moon doesn't belong to the group of movies you listed.
