Would you rank him among comedy legends like Chaplin, Groucho and Peter Sellers?

Also, do you think many years after he's dead, people will put him in the same category of those?

reply

Yes I would. A very talented actor with his own unique style of comedy. As well as being an accomplished dramatic actor, which is not unusual for comedians.

I like Jim Carrey, but I often find myself not thinking he's at the level of the other guys, but I don't know why I feel that way. Eternal Sunshine is a near masterpiece, Dumb & Dumber is a comedy classic. Maybe he needs to create his own character like Austin Powers.

reply

Your post is funnier than anything Carrey did!

Now that is comedy!

reply

No. He had his moments but personally never someone I'd watch a film for.

reply

Yes for sure . Im having so much fun watching him in the sonic movies with my kid. I cant wait till hes a bit older to show him ace, cable guy, dumb and dumber. Heck im gonna watch batman forever see if my boy regonizes him. Love jim carrey. We also enjoy chaplin films for much of the same reasons , the physicality they bring to any performance

reply

I feel his politics get in the way of how people feel about him.

reply

Agreed. Time will rember him for the laughs and smiles he brought to the millions of people. Just read a book on chaplin and he also had a lot of things going on that did not sit well with lots of groups and people. But life is full of soo many crazy events , can be hard to judge a man/women with out walkin in their shoes. Just to make laughter and smiles , is such a wonderful thing to do for a mass of people . I dunno, its like magic

reply

According to people, being a crazy liberal = "booooo!". Being a pedo = "well, we can push that aside".

reply

Not quite - he’s in the next tier down.

reply

Canadianist!

reply

Nope. I think the only films of his I'd bother watching again would be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show - and I'm in no particular hurry to do so.
I don't like him as a comedian though I did watch The Mask fairly recently and it was better than I remembered.

reply

I don't find Groucho's movies rewatchable either. Sellers has 3 bangers for me: Dr. Strangelove, Being There and Murder by Death.

reply

Yes he is a comedy legend. Chaplin and Groucho were a totally different type of comedy IMO.
