Disaster movie recommendations

I've always liked disaster movies. Volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, meteorites, movies depicting disasters in outer space, etc, I like them all.

Although I prefer ones that attempt to be realistic and well made, I really would be willing to watch any disaster movie even those bordering on campy and ridiculous. For example, I would prefer something like Twister to Sharknado but will accept any recommendations.

What disaster movie would you recommend?

reply

Yeah I like them too. I like the 70s, lots of classics there. All the Airport films, posseidon, towering inferno, earthquake and more that I'm forgetting.

More recent ones would be volcano or dantes peak, the day after tomorrow.

Not sure they fall into the disaster genre, but films like air force one or olympus has fallen are good to watch too. I always loved true lies. But I'm veering off into action films I think.

A really good miniseries is Chernobyl. It's available to rent/buy it on YouTube.

I remember seeing Earthquake when I was a kid in Miami that had “Sensurround”. We lived in Key West but my dad wanted to see it there on one of our regular shopping trips because of the “Sensurround” that our local theater didn’t have.

reply

What is Sensurround? Sounds like the seats would shake during the quake or something.

reply

I can't believe I forgot the best one of the all! ... Threads. It is terrifying.

It's on Internet Archive if you want to watch it.

reply

Thank you for the recommendations! I have seen Chernobyl and agree that it is excellent. I've never seen Threads, though, and will try to check it out.

reply

I watched Threads when it came out; I still get night terrors now because of it.

reply

I love horror movies, but that one wrecked me. Can't believe it was a TV movie.

reply

I have to admit, y'all are scaring me a little bit about this one.

reply

It’s actually a documentary style film about Britain under a nuclear attack. It came out in 1984 when we were living in fear of nuclear war. There’s no hope or happy ending; it’s bleak and depressing.

reply

Sounds like it was a bit ahead of its time as far as lack of happy ending. At least I'll be going into it with the right mindset. Interestingly enough, there was an ad on Facebook for this movie just last night saying it was going to be aired for only the fourth time since it was released. I thought that was an interesting coincidence! Unfortunately I missed the airing but I will search for it.

As an aside, I once visited a decommissioned nuclear bunker - The Secret Bunker in Essex http://www.secretnuclearbunker.com/ I found it absolutely fascinating.

It’s on tonight!

I just looked and I can't get that channel. 😞 I was wrong thinking it was on last night and that I had missed it. But I'll still keep trying to find a way to watch it!

And how coincidental that it's going to be aired tonight when we started talking about it!

This came to mind

Burning bright (2010)

A woman and her autistic brother are trapped in a house with a tiger and there's a tornado outside.

reply

Either one of those conditions by itself would be disastrous enough. That's what I call a double disaster! And it has Wyatt from Ozark and Meat Loaf! I'll put it on my list. Thanks!

reply

Good movie! Have seen it a couple of times. The scene where the young woman first discovers she's trapped with a tiger in the house stands out in my memory.

reply

The Day After Tomorrow is a very fun, stupid disaster movie.
The principal cast are great and the lesser known actors are just fine.

*warning, this is a very silly movie.

reply

Thank you! That is one of an embarrassingly long list of movies I've heard of but never watched. I will watch it on your recommendation!

Would a typhoon disabling a small boat in piranha infested waters qualify? If so, you’ll love the cast and late 70s vibe of Killer Fish (1979), with an Italian director who LOVED using miniature models for his special effects.

This looks like one where I won't want to have a mouth full of drink at the wrong time. I will certainly consider it. 😁

The Impossible, 2012

reply

Yes, this is the one that came immediately to my mind.

Dante's Peak

Twister
Night of the Twisters (the two movies are not related)
The Abyss (involves a hurricane)
Armageddon
Deep Impact
The Core
A Crack In The World (old 60s film, very iffy, but still entertaining)
When Worlds Collide (another old 60s film)
