Actors' IQs

I've been seeing these websites telling us how incredibly high some of these actor's IQs are. Then I ran into one that said Sylvester Stallone's IQ was 160, and I said..... HOLD UP.

Anyway, can't find any verification for this assertion. I guess they're just making at least some of this up.

Not to say that some of these folks don't appear to be super sharp. But that one was just a bridge too far.

reply

HE DOES HAVE AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR SCREENWRITING.

reply

Yeah. That was a great acheivement. Not just the screenplay, but his heart about making it all happen. But 160 ? C'mon, man.

reply

They say Dolph's is 160 as well.

reply

THAT ONE IS VERIFIED.

reply

And that's the IQ of the dumb dolphin that got itself trapped and tested.

reply

Dolph Lundgren had a stellar academic record in chemical engineering, had at least one advanced degree and a prestigious scholarhip to MIT. For real.

A career in showbiz doesn't mean that a person is unfit for academia or other demanding professions, people like Mayim Bialik and Brian May have doctorates in the hard sciences, and still choose showbiz over careers as scientists.

reply

Oh, I know. I followed Dolph for many, many years.

reply

Apparently since his 1980s heyday, he's spent most of his adult life making direct-to-video/PPV/streaming action movies, instead of going back to school and finishing his degree. And if that's what he wanted, more power to him for following his dreams, instead of doing what was expected.

And if Mayim Bialyk would rather be a game show host than a scientist, that's also up to her. Still, it's a strange world we live in, where a game show host is better off than a scientist.

reply

Truman Capote famously said that the better the actor, the dumber they are. He pointed to Marlon Brando. I would update that by adding Robert De Niro, I believe it's an open Hollywood secret that he is not the brightest star in the sky.

reply

Tom Cruse - shit human being, dumb as dirt - fine actor.

reply

There are some fine actors with high IQs, someone pointed out Janes Woods. I'll note Robert Vaughn and Peter Weller, both with earned (as opposed to honorary) PhDs.

reply

Peter Weller was a guy, to me, who was obviously brilliant. Some others that strike me, just at face value, as extremely schmart :

Kevin Spacey
James Spader
John Cusack
Jody Foster
Natalie Portman
Gary Oldman
Tim Roth
Matthew Broderick
Fred Armisen

reply

"Matthew Broderick"

So smart that he didn't know what side of the road to drive on in Ireland and killed two people.

reply

Says the guy who never did anything dumb in his life. I would very much resist driving in the UK, because all my instincts & muscle memory are wrong. When I first got to London a double-decker bus came maybe 1.5 foot from my nose, I was looking left when I should have been looking right. That was a wake up call.

reply

Brando, at least by the 70s, couldn't memorize his lines, or was too lazy to. The had to put notes everywhere for him to read from. :)

reply

hmm , so how are we rating D Trumps performance in Home alone 2 , and what IQ can we extrapolate from that?

reply

An armchair rating - 110-115. Not quite officer material. But very, very clever & manipulative. Not all cognitive/social skills show up on such a test.

Alii scored low. There is speculation he threw the test because he didn't want to go into the service & his education was not exactly great. Clearly he was highly intelligent by any real-world standard.

reply

I've read several times that versatile actor James Woods is in the 160 neighborhood. The story I got was that, he was studying at MIT when he suddenly decided to do an about face and pursue acting. It obviously turned out to be the right decision as he's had a prolific career.

reply

He brags about how smart he is. I think he said on Letterman that he maxed the math sat. Him its not hard to see as very bright. But I thought Stalone at 160 was just laughable.

reply

Max Baer Jr. couldn't make it in Hollywood as an actor because he was unable to shake the iconic image of the dumb character of Jethro from The Beverly Hillbillies he had created in the mind of the viewing public. He did later produce, direct and star in a movie, Macon County Line (1974), which became somewhat of a cult classic. Behind the scenes, he developed a reputation as a very savvy businessman and became successful, wealthy in that arena.

reply

That was a memorable film. I saw it, I think, at a drive-in.

reply

Yeah, definitely a drive-in type of flick.

reply

Sounds like Lundgren's story.

Hedy Lamarr

Legit

Co-invented frequency hopping technology and was the inspiration for Catwoman. Every geek and nerd in the world should have a poster of her on their wall.

reply

she had no formal training whatsoever.

Watch Celebrity Jeopardy sometime. The clues are all on the same level as the teen tournament and the lack of correct answers is plainly embarrassing.... yet people are so fast to quote these dorks like they're an authority on, well, anything at all.

reply

My favorite example of this is Joe Rogan and his guests. They gather up these nuggets of believe-it-or-not surprising facts from their deep internet youtube 'research', such as how horrible it is to be eaten by a bear because they are omnivores and therefore just start chomping on you anywhere, as opposed to, say, a leopard - presented like mini Ted Talks. He's such a smug weed-addled goober - and his audience is in the gazillions.

One of my all-time favorite SNL skits (not just this one, all of them!)

reply

I watched in amazement once...I mean news people like Chris Matthews, not actors, people who come across as smart, only to fall on their faces. They know a lot about politics and Washington D.C. scene, but their general knowledge can be poor.

reply

I have an IQ of 10,532!

See? Anyone can claim anything about their IQ, and believe me actors do! I don't mean to say that they're all stupid, some are dumb and some are highly intelligent, I just mean that their publicists can claim absolutely anything on that front without fear of being fact-checked.

reply

I don't believe you!

reply

But if my publicist had managed to get that number published in all the mainstream press outlets, you probably would.

reply

Hey, I'm no sheep.

reply

Sharon Stone's iq is supposed to be 152. I don't see it myself.

reply

Me neither. Never got her appeal, at all.
