who is the next Spielberg?

who is the next Spielberg?

yes, he's getting old and a pinch stale, so, who else fills that void?
- many, many, many really successful films
- more PG rated than R? I think? some family stuff, good dramas, action, comedy etc

This list is IMDB, so... meh....

There's nobody particularly close. Maybe Christopher Nolan

Spielberg is known for making quality mainstream movies, which many directors can sort of do, but he's also mainly known for his huge box office success. Very few directors can do both consistently. James Cameron could, but he's old as fuck too

Box office-wise, the closest thing to Spielberg would be not a director, but Kevin Feige. And that demonstrates how the industry has shifted so drastically towards franchises

You can't really have a Spielberg nowadays because audiences are more loyal to franchises than they are to specific directors. So I'd say closest person now would be Nolan, although his similarities to Spielberg are mostly superficial and although I'm not a huge Spielberg fan, his movies are way less clunky than Nolan's

It would take a truly exceptional talent to reach that sort of status, and I don't see anyone like that on the horizon

exactly how I am seeing things too. I love Nolan but didn't want to influence ANY thoughts here.
here's a just okay list: directors with the most films in IMDB top 250, and nolan is #1 beating Speilberg there also

I see Kevin F up high in THE NUMBERS page... but, he doesn't have a single director credit.

Nolan is more like Kubrick. J.J Abrams is the new Spielberg.

reply

JJ tried, but failed.

reply

He's the closest, but that's mostly due to mimicry and trying to cash in on nostalgia.

reply

Yes, J.J has been mimicking Spielberg for years.

reply

Yep.

reply

There is no one. Only Kubrick can be Kubrickian. Only Lynch can be Lynchian. Only Spielberg can be Spielbergian.

reply

No one. And the style that worked in his heyday doesn't fly these days.

reply

He hasn't tried these days. Why wouldn't it fly?

reply

Denis Villeneuve perhaps?

reply

yeah, he's made some really good films, but not so good audience reach

reply

James Mangold maybe. He's done drama, comedy, western, action, mystery...

3:10 to Yuma
Logan
Ford v. Ferrari
Identity
Walk the Line
Girl, Interrupted
Cop Land

He's nowhere near Spielberg but I guess he's the closest and has variety.

reply

Let's see how his Indiana Jones 5 turns out.

reply

I doubt there will ever be another Spielberg

He chose great scripts and stories, he had amazing commercial success, a 40+ year career and he's probably a billionaire by now

His movies are terrific

reply

I agree with you 👍

In addition to what the other posters have said, Spielberg is kind of a child at heart and has a repertoire of animated works to his credit: producer of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Land Before Time, "Were Back! A Dinosaur Story," An American Tail, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons etc. AND he directed that Tintin movie.

Because of his extensive work in animation there is no other director worth mentioning in comparison to Spielberg (maybe Tim Burton, who was once a Disney animator?).

Not to mention the extensive credits Spielberg has in various television shows and mini-series, as well as video games.

I wanna say Peter Jackson or David Fincher, who both have varied filmographies AND have dabbled in animation, but they're nowhere remotely close to being in the same league as Spielberg.

Also, no one else can direct two of the greatest movies of all time at the same time: Jurassic Park (1993) and Schindler's List (1993). That's just nuts!

Robert Zemeckis gave it a go with Cast Away and What Lies Beneath, but one movie was great, the other not so much.

reply

Max Spielberg. He directed Jaws 19.
