yes, he's getting old and a pinch stale, so, who else fills that void?
- many, many, many really successful films
- more PG rated than R? I think? some family stuff, good dramas, action, comedy etc
I don't think there will ever be another filmmaker who will fill his shoes in the same way. The man has been defining, and redefining, and redefining again, the art of movie-making since he started. He's been a director whose every project has been an "event film" for over 45 years, and he's still just as relevant as he ever was.
If James Cameron put out more than one film every 200 years, he might be close.
Personally, I think the closest would be between Nolan and Abrams. Nolan is the better filmmaker. Abrams is the better producer. Spielberg was BOTH.
I can't see how Abrams would be in the conversation. The guy barely directs anything other than established franchises that aren't good and while I really like the Cloververse and wish it would expand, Abrams' projects aren't nearly as established or good as most films that Nolan or Spielberg create, for the most part.
Nolan is the only one who is close, but he lacks the box office success of Spielberg. I am in the minority, but I think Spielberg has gone stale for quite some time. That being said he is obviously still one of the best directors of all time.
I don't think you're in the minority. Most critics agree. I agree. Realistically, he's already a has-been and he HAS BEEN (hehe) for almost 20 years. His last masterpiece was Saving Private Ryan
Ever since War of the Worlds he's been just another director, nothing particularly special. The Post and Ready Player One were both terrible IMO
Haha too funny, but I really like his War of the Worlds and I thought Ready Player One was actually not bad, but maybe it was because I came in with such low expectations for Player. I agree his last truly outstanding movie was Ryan, but I think after that he majorly digresses and is a hit or miss.
