have you had anything cancelled yet because of corona

two things today - my annual physical on march 24 was pushed back two months which is fine because i really don't want to hang out in a doctor's office and a two day work seminar scheduled for april 6th and 7th has been cancelled - no great loss.

also, i may be working from home if this continues. the sky is falling.

Minnesota's governor closed schools statewide for at least two weeks.

We have 8 confirmed cases in my town. A lot of things are shut down for 2 weeks. The town 5 miles from me is under "self-quarantine". They've had 19 confirmed cases. Residents from my town shop at the same supermarket as that town. It's just a matter of time. My local CVS was empty on a Sunday morning. That never happens -- even in extreme weather.

reply

Damn, that’s close to home. What state are you in?

reply

NJ nearest to NYC

reply

Stay safe. Hope you and your loved ones can avoid it.

thx

Wow. Strange times we're living in.

I know you're a smart guy, so you're going to have been taking all possible precautions. Stay safe, be well.

I'm more worried about my elderly mother who has some of the underlying health conditions that can't handle this. I do too but I don't care. She lives not too far from me and it's creeping closer to that area. And I can't go there b/c I might be bringing it with me. It's a bit of a conundrum.

reply

I'm sorry to hear you're both in the at-risk categories. Does she need anything? Anything that can't be gotten or done over the phone, including just some company?

Don't forget, not all people in at-risk categories who even get it necessarily get a serious, let alone fatal, case of it. Just like not all young, healthy people only get mild cases, or don't get it at all.

Thinking of you and your mom.

She food shops like she still has a family in the house, so she'll have enough for a while. But I'm really depending on the neighbors and her church circle to check in-person. It's a tiny, close-knit town, and she's only one block from the ambulance, fire dept, boro hall facilities -- so that helps. And the county has also opened a testing facility about 10 minutes from her.

It's just about her being honest about how she feels. As an old Finnish woman, that's always an issue. Her inclination is always to suck it up rather than complain. You have to pull the truth out of her.

reply

This is all good, except for the part about her being a stiff upper lip sort who's disinclined to say if they're not feeling well. Even in a situation such as this. My father was the same way.

You can call and check up on her though, right? Nothing prevents that?

reply

I call 3x a day. Siblings who live far away call as well.

She has something right now but congestion/runny nose is the only symptom or so she says after a prolonged interrogation. But she's 92 and diabetic so anything puts you on edge.

reply

Great. You're lucky you've got siblings who help too.

I'm sure you already know, but a runny nose is rare with this. But sure, at that age and being diabetic, it's normal to worry, especially now.

Nothing major, but the Melbourne comedy festival was scheduled soon (I'm from Melbourne) and several shows I was set to attend have been cancelled - the entire festival is cancelled.

My side business has been getting cancellations left and right. I don't work, I don't get paid.

The local schools are closed for two weeks. There have been cancellations of a lot of local events. They've even closed the local food pantries. One thing that hurt me was that the library is closed until March 30. Oh well, a small price to pay.

Every winter during the height of the cold and flu season, in church we don't offer each other "the sign of peace" with a handshake or hug. Oddly enough, it wasn't suspended this winter. But last week we were told to offer it "carefully" and most people just nodded to each other. Our church must really be taking this seriously though. They cancelled bingo!

My Mayor set up a 2nd conference call tonight with residents (the first was only this past Fri) to announce more measures and closings. My county, most likely due to its proximity to NYC, has been the hardest hit in NJ.

Bergen?

reply

Yup.

Yes, my husband sadly canceled our trip to Colorado (we were going to a friend's wedding) because he was terrified that we were going to get the coronavirus. Believe me, I was not happy with his decision because he really pissed me off and I don't really believe that we were going to get the illness. I feel bad for our friends because I feel like we should have been there for them on their very special day. I think one day, my husband will regret making that decision....

8pm curfew now. I feel like a kid again.
