I saw Tail Gunner Joe a long time ago. It took some dramatic liberties but was generally an accurate portrayal of McCarthy and that period.
Peter Boyle was very good. So was John Forsyth.

I remember Edward Andrews was very good The Phenix City Story in a villainous role. He looked avuncular. He usually portrayed genial characters. He was a big man, about 6 foot 2 or 3 with broad shoulders. He was really menacing in this movie.
