I felt the same when he was at the firing range, that it was the first time -- but Schrader has answered this question over and over without confirming or denying. He simply says that Vietnam -- if he was there -- didn't create what you see -- i.e., it's no commentary about the effects of war on this character. I think part of his response has to do with the difference between his view and Scorsese's.
Tom Hardy/Darren Aronofsky
Miles Teller/Safdie Bros
Rosamund Pike/David Lynch
Carey Mulligan/Robert Eggers
Anne Hathaway/Damien Chazelle

The voice may present problems.
If you've already watched that scene, you've seen most of the "war" portion. It's much more about depicting the impact and residue of war on a group of people from a PA steel town.
And for my money, it's really Walken and Savage who deliver the goods in that sequence.
No, but Spaeny has chops for days. She'll be the highlight, like Rapace was for Prometheus.
Lame broadcast. Should've tried to come back with a roar instead of this clunky crap.
Let RDJ host the rest of the way. Koy is cringe.
People prefer the safety of the same old thing, and this phenomenon extends to film as well. Plenty of original content, but they won't bother to dig in and take that modest risk of not finding said content enjoyable or compelling.
To make an interesting film? Joker and Nolan's Batman are surely not the work of purists, but they succeeded with audiences, b/c most who buy tix are not purists, but more likely oblivious to the details of the source material. What I don't get is the mindset that thinks faithful adaptations work best for a compelling 2-hour movie. And let's face it, you wind up drawing the purists to the theater as well, if only out of curiosity, so it's at least partially pre-sold.
Glenn Close - Fatal Attraction

Sally Field - Norma Rae
Sean Penn - Dead Man Walking, Mystic River
Jane Fonda - Cat Ballou, Klute
Helen Mirren - your best example
Michael Douglas - Wall Street, Fatal Attraction
The Falcon and the Snowman

Overrated.
The Exorcist -- and it's a better film as well.
7 is my line, unless it's the rare viewing of a so-bad-it's-good cult classic kinda thing
Door-to-door alone, with a can in my hand. Old school.
Not a myth. I sang Deck the Halls solo. Just a more aggressive form of busking.
Oh, so he is your favorite celeb. I thought you'd say you wouldn't ask him anything b/c he's not actually your favorite.
