Nope. They gave some quick patchy explanation that left LOTS of plot holes and didn't make any sense.
The only explanation that really made sense was the purgatory theory... which only worked for the first half of the series. I think that was probably the original (planned) ending, but then they kept launching even more mystery boxes until they didn't know how to solve the whole thing and gave some 'just because my balls' final.
It reflects the woke church, which is only <i>a part</i> of western society.
Prostitution is a very wide term, it goes from the girl holding the corner to Lindsey Lohan. Does it include porn? Does it include a 20 years old chick marrying a wealthy 70 years old guy? Does it include Femen chicks trying to get media attention?
Prostitution is a blurry concept with blurry boundaries. I'd say porn lies in the near side of it, while Femen chicks and erotic movies would in the far side, and naked models in the very (very) far side.
Well, perhaps you're right about 'night terrors'. But I have a soft spot for horror stories in Doctor Who...
Early feminism was mainly about freedom. Modern woke feminism is a different ideology and freedom is not required anymore. Modern women are not supposed to be free. They're supposed to fill some specific role and no other. The role is different, of course, but it's a defined role nonetheless. Anything but the approved role is "rewarded" with social shame.
Indeed, most modern woke Hollywood movies work as 'educational' tool to teach people their roles. That's very similar to how XVIIIth and XIXth century literature used to be. Books and movies are very effective tools to compel people into their expected social roles. Writers like Jane Austen and Alcott seem to be representative of their century, but (in some ways) they were the exception, not the rule.
That could be an episode of The Twilight Zone. The bitter ending fits. The series had a revival with a few seasons during the 80s. Perhaps it was one of the episodes.

"<i>But the work of chaplains, both North and South, often went beyond just the spiritual needs of their flocks. As Steven Woodworth points out in his book, While God Is Marching On, chaplains fulfilled a variety of duties including that of courier, postal clerk, carpenter, nurse, gunrunner, and soldier.</i>
Because it's not about creating new stories. It's about rewriting the classic ones.
Star Wars was an institution 5 years ago. Now it's a radioactive franchise.
Social prestige is something extremely powerful... until you lose it.
• "<i>Who was going to say a critic was racist?</i>"
The woke parish
• "<i>Why would they be afraid of being called racist now as opposed to any other time?</i>"
Being called 'Racist' right now (with the exception of anti-white racism, of course) is equivalent to be called 'sinner' or 'heretic' a couple of centuries ago. It's basically being labeled as someone who has sinned against the woke commandments.
• "<i>What would have even happened if a critic were called "Racist", or "Sexist", or "Crazy" or "Dumb" or "Misguided", etc, etc?</i>"
Probably he would be fired. Most professional critics work for a magazine.
• "<i>Would a critic lose something for being called anything?</i>"
His job.
Not to say the current Doctor seems to be a religious woke preacher more than an alien traveler.

Mostly Tennant's. One from Eccleston, one from Matt Smith, zero from Capaldi (which is a pity, if he had good scripts, he could have been one of the best Doctors), and zero from Nurse Whoke.
I'd say he was a classic liberal, now he doesn't know where to go. As most classic liberals that don't like wokeness, but don't want to be associated with the right, nowadays he defines himself through what he's <i>against</i> (which is a bit of everything).
<blockquote>The most famous example is Massala in "Ben Hur", where the gay writer deliberately wrote the character as gay and the actor played along, and mainstream audiences assumed the character was straight.</blockquote>
This is how it should be, because this is how it works in real life. If you're straight, unless you know somebody personally, chances are you won't notice he's gay.
If a movie is properly done, I expect some character to be gay (like in real life) but you won't notice it unless you have the 'gay radar' (like in real life) or that character has some romantic subplot.
You'll see that most of the time you'll find them with english subs included (with some very few exceptions, japanese audio is much better than english dub).
In case they don't include subs, check here, best place to look for subs for anything Asian-related: https://subscene.com
Another recommendation that just came to my mind, Tokyo Ghoul. It's a bit battle shounen, but it's a good (and dark) series:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3741634/
Mmm... anime movies are usually more 'good feeling', perhaps sad, but rarely dark. If you wanna go dark, you'll find more material in series. Most of them only have one season and about 10-20 episodes.
Shiki could be a nice option, it's like an anime version of Salem's Lot

Elfen Lied has the best start I have seen. The rest is not that good, though

You have some ones that look childish but turn VERY dark. A couple of examples. If you're going to watch any of them, avoid any spoilers.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (the link is correct and it's not a joke, it turns dark and depressing)

You should be more specific. What are you looking for? Fantasy? Scifi? Thriller? Slice of Life? Relaxing? Anime covers a lot of genres.
A trick with Anime is to look for the japanese name (not in kanji, but in western alphabet). In the case of 'your name', the original japanese is 'Kimi no Na wa'
There's a site called MyAnimeList, you can find the original titles there. The 'Recommendations' tab will give you other movies/series similar to the one you're looking. It's very useful.

He had some really good puns without insulting anybody. He was at his best.
