You might be right, I looked it up and there was not a massive spike during that quarter. Probably more reason why Snyder Cut is likely a one and done thing. Justice League. The hype for the snyder cut brought some fantastic attention to HBO Max, however I would be shocked if the loss on that film didnt increase in the process of Snyders spending to update and release it. no the proper term is not murder. It was an accident, murder is intentional. They want HBO Max to be as successful as possible and COVID time seem like a good time to really drive for subscribers. So simultaneous theatrical releases and pumping money into and releasing the Snyder Cut. It will hurt the theatrical films, and they likely created an even larger loss on JL but they seem to be taking the long term view of the potential earnings from HBO Max. It is overused, however its a legitimate critique for a film or show because the elements that make up the simplified woke complaint are things that effect the quality of a project. Casting that doesn't make sense, story elements that don't work and don't fit in overall narrative, changing longstanding characters and/or their behaviors for no logical reason, overpowering characters, tokenism, a push for people to connect on a superficial level rather than anything that characters do on screen, stereotyping, race/gender swapping, etc all fall under the woke complaint. These are things that have been part of general criticism forever. Everything you would find wrong with casting say Cumberbatch as Malcom X you should find wrong with Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne Boleyn. The latter is considered woke casting, a cast choice that doesn't make sense for a historical character, that is more about the creators wanting a certain representation on screen rather than what best serves the story and character. Her casting is a valid criticism for a historical drama. As you can see with one of the responses to your post there are people here that continue to feed the divide on the issue. They don't seem to understand much like actual racists they create a toxic atmosphere of hate when they cant legitimately argue or discuss something and simply default to calling people or their statements racist. Oddly enough I have been watching older movies and tv shows, not real old but 70s and above and I am actually quite surprised at the level of representation. I never noticed much when I was younger because I wasn't raised to prefer content based on skin color or gender. I am 40+ years old and I have never had a point in my life where I couldn't find films/tv shows with non white actors and/or female leads. But listening to people today you would think it didn't exist until twitter came into being. There is no question things have leaned heavily white and racial bias has existed. But white people are still the largest single population in the country, white males have made up the largest viewing demo in most film types since the beginning of films in the US and many other mature western film industries. I think if you were to sit down and follow the demo in the US of many popular films from theater to home sales it would likely still lean heavily white and male. So films even without any racial bias would have leaned this way regardless. The problem today is you have people that over compensate and also mimic the same beliefs they say are wrong. For instance, group specific films. Its either ok or it isn't. Race or gender swapping characters, again it is either ok or it isn't. Personally I believe a film should simply be cast to fit what you are making. If you are doing a film set on a reservation you should look for performers that fit the setting, either actual representatives or at least look correct with merit being the primary focus on hiring talent. There is a point 911 operators can hang up, but generally you have to make an attempt to assist the person unless it becomes clear that its a hoax or there is no more an operator can do. You can get fired and possibly arrested for hanging up on people. https://www.complex.com/life/new-orleans-911-operator-arrest
After 4 weeks, it made $366M. It seems that final box office will be around $380M, more or less, same amount as Black Widow. It was a flop. As usual, I was right.
To be fair, it will outperform BW overall and may slide into the 400 mil range depending on how the rest of its run goes. BW made about another 10 mil from this point on domestically, so you have to figure it will do about the same if not more since it has consistently outperformed BW on daily box office so that will carry it close to 400 mil. a Flop? Really depends on how Disney looks at it. If it factors in COVID and a lack of China release..the film could be considered a success even though it may not profit much if at all coming out of theaters. I agree. It was a nice progression for Daniel while building out the background of Mr Miyagi. They are the two main characters of the first film. Its their relationship that the first film revolves around. Ali and his mother are secondary characters, not bad ones, but not essential. The different setting was a nice change as well. This film, the original and the series make a nice viewing package altogether. Black women are nothing new to Bond. While there are some legitimate concerns with the childish way diversity/representation are handled these days in entertainment, Lashana Lynch just being in the film isn't one of them. There is nothing wrong with her physical appearance, but if it bothers that much, Ana de Armas, is in the film as well. The Numbers has downgraded its expected performance this weekend. However with the holiday weekend opening, no D+ same day release and running virtually unopposed for its first 4 weeks has helped it build a nice COVID domestic take. Its international still isn't good, so overall box office isnt great. It will be interesting to see how Disney looks at these results. I added this to my list, I am not sure when I will get to it. I am pretty backed up on my streaming watch list. Domestic is strong for covid time, but the international is pretty bad. It will surpass BW domestically, but it looks like without a China release and it is running behind in almost every territory internationally compared to BW. It may end up in the high 300s maybe 400. So as an overall release, not good for a MCU movie and possibly have to rely on rental market to profit. I do wonder how BW would have done, at least domestically, if it had not been kneecapped by the D+ same day release. While that is true, he got pretty beat up and he isn't a small woman. There are levels of suspension of disbelief. Female action heroes, which I enjoy usually, push the envelope further than reasonable sized men. Even if a man and woman look of similar size they are not usually of similar strength and speed. Its why I don't enjoy mixed wrestling matches, it pushes envelope too far for me. Well your post about this got a little side tracked lol, but I will be interested to see this weekends drop to tell whether it really will flop. Compared to BW, which was a box office disappointment, Labor Day is the primary reason at this point it is running ahead of BW. You cant deny it did better than most expected in the US. However The Numbers actually predicted it would make a little bit more than it did. The reality is BW was released simultaneously on Disney + a service with a large user base which I believe unquestionably stunted its box office performance overall. So any comparison has to take into account Shang Chi had a advantage since its audience wasnt given an alternative...even if that alternative is an absurd $30 rental fee. The labor day weekend puff pieces aside. The international doesn't look great, it appears to have opened behind BW in most major markets they shared and that film didn't have a great international run. China has become too important for these films and a lack of a timely release or any release at all is killing these films. IF it lands in the same range as BW it will be a theatrical flop even with a lower budget. Before Endgame, I watched all the films in the MCU. Now I may watch a few here and there but I am no longer interested in catching them all. Shangi Chi I will check out eventually, but Eternals I have no interest in nor do I wish to see Black Widow. I have skipped the TV series. Variety didnt care for it either https://variety.com/2021/film/reviews/halloween-kills-review-jamie-lee-curtis-david-gordon-green-1235058590/ To be honest, I believe what soured many people on the 3rd film was the fate of certain key characters at the beginning and the special effects of the creature itself. The cast is good, and it has a great atmosphere, even the humor works and the ending is actually well done and emotionally impactful for a film that appeared to be a series end. It is definitely better than anything that came after it IMO. Plenty of people go to the theater, and while I think it probably wont do well, I doubt a day one release on Disney + will help that. Its worth a watch regardless of whether you see this film or not. Its a good film and Tony Todd is fantastic as Candyman.
