The concepts of apology, mercy, and forgiveness all go out the window when someone is on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Maybe he had these grand plans, but I think it's equally as likely he was just at the end of his ropes, considering the reports about his history/bullying coming out. A school shooter mindset - one destructive act before potential suicide. Instead of taking out a bunch of random people however, he saw an opportunity to up the stakes with Trump visiting his area.
