I feel like the 80s gets a lot of attention but the 90s was pretty much saying that the 80s was just one big bad joke, full of men wearing short shorts, women with shoulder pads, "rock" groups of men in drag and overly positive music in general.
The 90s brought a touch of realness back to people's lives.
It was great in terms of video games, kids cartoons and a few good movies but the 90s kid in me can see through this nostalgia and be like "dude, the 80s were a joke!"
You forgot mullets. But Yes and No I think. I think any kind of nostalgia is good and sometimes justified. I feel Stranger things is one of the few 80 nostalgia vehicles to get it right. But holy hell I feel we need to pump the brakes just a little bit. It's getting to the point of absurdity.
IMO the 80s had better movies, and the 90s had better music.
The 80s had some good movies but you're right, music was better in the 90s. Compare 80s rap to the likes of 2pac. No comparison! Or 90s R & B like Lauren Hill on 'Killing Me Softly', it really did hit the apex.
90s had some great movies as well that are still fan favorites. Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Home Alone, The Matrix, Terminator 2. I think the 90s was more about getting the balance right between reality and fantasy.
Art is meant to be cathartic (releasing emotion) so when artists like Jewel and Smashing Pumpkins sing about real life and dark emotions people respond.
It's most likely because you grew up in the '90s. Most people seem to believe that the fill-in-the-blank of their teen years was better than that of other eras. Personally, I view the '90s as a cultural wasteland, unable to produce anything new, and instead rehashing the '70s and '80s. You mention 2pac, a one-time friend of mine btw, and he's a great example-- his "music" was just records from the '70s and '80s looped behind him while he rapped, an artform created in the '70s.
Something to consider-- the '70s gave us rap and punk, the '80s reformulated disco into EDM. The '90s gave us... people continuing to do rap, punk, and EDM. Has an entirely new genre of music been created since the early '80s? Even today the pop music is rap, rock, and EDM. Blame the immediacy of the internet, the advent of digital technology, tech companies taking over the music industry, or whatever else you want, but it certainly seems that new scenes and sounds ceased to happen circa 1985.
To me it's exactly the other way around - the 80's had better music (mainly New Wave) and the 90's had better movies. The Usual Suspects, The Devil's Advocate, The Game, The Matrix, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, American Beauty - all came out in the 90's. Movies from the 80's are too corny for the most part.
Oh yeah, if there's one thing the production crew gets right is nailing the 1980s setting. I've never seen such attention to detail for one specific era. I don't think The Goldbergs even comes close. Not a single damn person smokes (that I can recall) because it's on the family-oriented ABC network.
They're gonna ride that nostalgia train until we're sick of it. Now with 2020 approaching, we'll have everything 1990s. Again, ABC already hopped on with shows such as Schooled and Fresh Off the Boat.
90's weren't the best, but any year that was after 2000 was just God awful. There hasn't even been a "MEH" year since 1999 Nothing is good anymore. Life is a terrible struggle, because everyone around us are just so awful. People really suck now and it is probably due to the world ending soon. We can feel that it is close and are instinctively reacting to it, but don't know why we are feeling so weighted down, depressed and angry.
I've seen weirder stuff. Some of it was trolling I'm sure, but not all. This one makes me want to look up the number for the suicide prevention hotline and post it.
There are people who think they know the exact date the world will end. Which they'll revise as soon as it comes and goes without incident. Those damn prophecies, always so vague and cryptic! It's only the religious folks who tend to have that kind of certainty regarding future events. The rest of us are forced to indulge in various degrees of getting it wrong.
Or maybe that poster is one of those fatalistic pessimists who thinks the human race is doomed to self-destruction, that sort of thing. People have been saying throughout recorded history that we're right on the edge of the abyss. All I can say is, if the world's going to hell it's taking its sweet time getting there!
The end is near. The human race cannot continue on its present course. I do think that humans, like animals are in tune with natural phenomena and the fact that our world is being destroyed in so many ways is causing a reaction. Humans are tied to an eco-system and when it is destroyed we slowly destroy ourselves. Part of that destruction has to do with how we treat one another. Humans can't survive without nature. There is no denying that.
A great number of people are going to die one way or another. We were born from the Earth and when humans destroy it, they will destroy themselves. It is going to happen within the next 100 years. The only people who will survive will be the super rich who will be living underground.
The Earth was here billions of years before humans and will be here billions of years after we wipe ourselves out. We are not stronger than nature. The environment has been ravaged more than any other time in Earth's history and with the population at the level it is now, this growing population can not be sustained. Remember the boy who cried wolf, he cried and cried and when people stopped listening, the wolf finally came.
I was tired of the earth will end tomorrow the first time I saw someone carrying one 50 years ago. And it wasn't a new movement. Everything you say has been said thousands of times. Its boring and pessimistic and has no basis.
Yes, the earth existed for billions of years before us and probably will for billions of years after us. But we can only realistically work in smaller numbers of years. And I prefer to be optimistic try to solve actual problems.
Just being a smartass. That comment was so depressing I could almost picture the person who made it cutting their own wrists. It's all so pointless, why go on? ☹
Maybe I watch too much television. I just saw a news story about someone pouring gas on a dog and setting it on fire. I see so many horrible things on the news about how people treat one another and how they treat animals. It makes me sad. Sometimes I just internalize all these things and it hurts my heart to know about all this shit. Rant over.
Media presents the distilled awfulness of the whole planet to grab attention. No one cares about the ten million city residents who followed the law today and were basically decent. It's the handful that did really nasty ѕhit who make the news.
It's the biggest loudmouths, the biggest douche bags, who dominate the political landscape - especially these last few years. If you want to raise your blood pressure just watch CNN, MSNBC, or even better The Fox Propaganda Network. But all media gives you a slanted, gloom and doom tinted look at the world. Walk down the street and I guarantee, you're not surrounded by awful people.
You are correct. I just have to stop watching the news. It is slanted and it does sensationalize things. There are bad people in the world, but there are more good. I have to remember that.
I don't see the world ending anytime soon. Even the worst case of climate change wouldn't be the apocalypse. Life will go on.
Ordinary people haven't changed. Human nature is no better or worse than it's ever been. I think maybe you need to disconnect from politics and corporate media a bit. Spend less time sucking up the rage and vitriol, the gloom and doom, that shit wears you down after a while.
I'm actually quite hopeful seeing my kids and their generation becoming far more active than we ever were. The future seems like it's in good hands.
They won't keep destroying it. It's mostly a matter of how long it takes to zero out our emissions. 2030 is probably not feasible, but 2035 or 2040 is. There will be consequences. It's only just beginning now. I'm just saying it won't be The End. Look up a period called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) if you want an idea of how much worse it's been in the past. The polar caps melted completely and the planet was ice free. Sea levels rose almost 200 feet above where they are now. Even if we approach something like that (an outside possibility) human civilization would survive.
We could be. It's not terribly likely though. The universe itself won't be hospitable to life forever. In that sense you're right, but the shorter term pessimism is unwarranted. Once we begin settling beyond this planet the chances of any single disaster wiping us out becomes practically nil.
While the show is set in the 80s, there is only an occasional nod to nostalgia (unlike Ready Player One that was just saturated with it). The show doesn't focus on it.
As far as the 90s being better than the 80s, it is all entirely subjective. I would say as far as music that targets white males, the grunge bands of the 90s were definitely better than the hair bands of the 80s, but as far as pop stars that target both genders and all races, there has never been anyone bigger than Michael Jackson, and he was big in the 80s (not to mention Prince) Thriller and Purple Rain are some of the greatest albums ever and they were in the 80s.
I meant in terms of fame, but I just looked it up, and apparently Jackson's figures are subject to debate, with Wikipedia reporting an estimated 350 million.
Hmm, okay. I always thought of them as pretty much equal on the world stage. If there were any two performers that EVERYONE knew of, in any country, it would be them.
I agree that the 90's grunge bands were better than the 80's hair metal. But they weren't better than the big metal bands of the 80's that were targeted toward guys, like, Ozzy, Metallica, ACDC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Queensryche, and so many more. I agree about MJ and Madonna
I’m a 90’s kid but I definitely think that 80’s toys and cartoons were better than the 90’s I don’t know a ton of 80’s music but the stuff on the show is pretty good. I had siblings that were a lot older than me so I feel like I got to experience the 80’s more than a lot of other 90’s kids. I was obsessed with my little pony, Star Wars and transformers, I don’t think I had a lot of 90’s favorite toys.
The 80s, no doubt, hit the mark for children's entertainment. So much of what is around today (ninja turtles, ghost busters, transformers etc) are 80s creations.
Super Mario came out in the 80s. There was a lot of ground breaking things from the 80s. But at the same time, was it really such a good time to exist?
I think the 80s is special if you grew up during that time. Nothing was online, so everything was tangible. I remember being a small boy and going to a jolly giant(think toys r us, but not as popular). At the time there was toys for pretty much everything. This was the start of serious consumerism aimed at kids. Transformers, heman, gobots, star wars, shera, thundercats, lego, turtles, cabbage patch kids, barbie, sindy, centurions, mask, the list goes on and on. And I walked into this store and the shelves were stacked with everything you could want and shelves were so tall you needed ladders to get to the top. They all had cartoons to go with them too. Even lazer tag had a cartoon.
We watched star wars, we somehow watched terminator, commando and predator and thought arnold was the greatest thing since bacon flavoured microchips. We saw the rebirth of star trek, the dawn of mario and sonic. We travelled through the stars in wireframe games like elite. We all had a crush on Alyssa milano and Tiffany. We got an appetite for destruction when guns n roses welcomed us to the jungle. We watched real shuttles going into space and the idea of actually travelling to the stars in our life time wasnt the fantasy it is today. Our cereals still had sugar in them, our chocolate bars were still full sized. We all sat in bed and listen to peter falk tell us the story of the princess bride. We enjoyed countless B movies that werent actually too bad. We went to video rental stores and choose movies to watch with friends a the weekend. And every single one of us had a friend whose dad didnt give a fuck that we were in the room and would happily watch barbarian queen and see the first naked ladies we would ever see.
The 80s was a time of wonder. It sparked imagination and allowed even the weirdest of us to find a place in the light. You had to be there to really know it, and even everything I just said is barely scratching the surface.
I was there, there were some good times no doubt. A great decade to be a kid. But I wouldn't trade now for then, no way. I like to live with technology.
We're at an awkward time for technology. 30-50 years from now wouldn't be too bad. I'd rather go back to 80s/90s (maybe earlier), or have some real awesome technology.
I guess, I see the benefits of no internet and the simpler life. I also, stay far away from social media. No Facebook, Instagram or twitter. It’s nice being able to shop online, or get movies and tv at the tough of a button. But I do miss the having to get up, go out way of life.
Look at what technology has turned us into. Rabid arseholes in search of “like” to fuel our self esteem. Back then, bullying was limited to “that prick at school”, now it’s any clown with keyboard to hide behind. Everything is watching us, looking to make money. Our phones, our handy dandy Star Trek influenced voice assistants, our TVs, our computers all watching, listening logging every second so they can sell us crap we don’t need.
Before you could get away with not really knowing what was going on in the world, now we know all it. And it’s horrible. We allow ourselves to run by psychopaths and sociopaths and bound helpless to watch as buffoons are re elected over and over on this same false promises and baby kissing photo ops while wearing shit eating grins like badges of honour. And while we had all these assholes back them too, we at least had a much better blanket of ignorance. Now we are just indifferent and jaded. That’s what technology has brought us. There’s no flying car, there’s no special medical device that treats you by waving a hand held device over you. We never got that date with Alyssa Milano. Transformers became a shit movie franchise and val Kilmer just doesn’t look like val Kilmer anymore. Video games take longer to load. Most of the children’s entertainers are in jail for raping kids. The future sucks.
Great post! One of the reasons I'm here is because I can't cope with posting on political sites like I used to. It's just too depressing. So I come here for a bit of escapism and movie chat.
The 80's was the last decade before the age of mass mobile communications and the internet. Kids were still on a relatively long leash too. There are a number of things that separate it from the period after. Early 90's should probably be included with it, mid-90's onward had a different feel. I actually liked the "overly positive" eighties music. Grunge was pretty good too but I was never a fan of the clothing that went with it. Maybe if I grew up in Seattle it would've seemed logical for my outfits to be as depressing as the sky.
Of course, the 80's did give us the culture of unbridled corporate greed that's still ravaging our society to this day. Which decade was better or more fun to live through, I guess that's a matter of perspective. People tend to idealize their formative years and everything associated with them.
Lol, I visited Seattle just two months ago (they have good weather already in late April/early May), and found it peculiar when the guide on one of the tours of the city I took mentioned all the famous musicians from Seattle except any of the grunge bands. I asked her after the tour why that was, she replied because their music is too much of a downer to include in her montage for the tour. I was like, well at least it's something to be proud of unlike friggin Kenny G! 😄
Chris, I submit to you that World War II and its profits ushered in corporate greed in the US long before the 80s. Witness Ike’s “Military/Industrial Complex” farewell speech.
Since the beginning of this country the rich elite have been trying to take over. The previous major power grab spawned the labor movement which ended it. In the 1980's changes to laws and policies began which have ushered in the latest cycle. We're going to have to revise such fundamental things as the definition of fiduciary responsibility in corporations and forbid all private money in elections - except perhaps for small donations by individuals. Not to mention banning lobbyists. Otherwise even if we stop them this time around, they'll be back to try again.
The beginning of African slavery 400 years ago was all about corporate greed. Hardly a new phenomenon. Capitalism can be a powerful force for economic prosperity, but only if it's properly regulated. It can be incredibly destructive otherwise. Like a nuclear reactor - a source of beneficial power, but at the same time a threat you have to be shielded from. We've drifted too far in the direction of not regulating. And that trend started in earnest during Ronald Reagan's tenure.
But I think the point was whether or not the 80's as a time is worthy of nostalgia. Every period in history had its charms, some more than others. Nothing wrong with reminiscing about the good stuff. As long as you don't fall into the old fogey's trap - things were so much better then, not like now, and the kids today I tell you! 😒
The actual meaning of “nostalgia” is “a longing for home,” and home is a place, not an era; so, yes, nostalgia is justified and is usually a part of being human. The word is improperly used in this topic, as it usually is. The topic headline should be something like Is 80s Glorification Justified?
Speaking as a fan of action movies, 80s glorification is justified. Speaking as someone who lived through the whole decade, if you love kitsch, you glorify the 80s. I don’t.
Be gone with you! The 80s gave you far more than you realise. For starters it heralded the birth of electronic music, the personal computer, CD's, a thriving film industry that wasn't afraid to take risks, an eclectic music scene with many different genres of music. Give me the 80's any day. What we have now is a pathetically timid music scene, there is no individualism despite so called 'pop stars' claiming to celebrate the individual and to 'go your own way' yet they all sound the same, they all rearrange the same old song and life in general is way more pressurised and don't get me started on the political landscape!
