Part that had me rolling my eyes - SPOILERS

When Roy leaves the Neptune space station, he detaches a hatch from the ship and uses it as a shield to make his way thru the debris of Neptunes rings and make it back to his ship orbiting above. Click, eyes rolling around in my head. How could he even find the orbiting ship in the vastness of space, and how the hell was he propelling himself toward his ship? And then ramming onto the surface of his ship, tumbling ass over teakettle and somehow making a grab for a handhold before he bounces off into space. Couldn't the writer come up with something better than that? It was moments like this, among other silliness, that pulled the film down to a mediocre level for me.

To be honest, the movie did have a few moments that seemed to be leading to something interesting. Ultimately, though, it failed, at least for me.

At least Brad Pitt had one film this year that succeeded (One Upon a Time...), and oh how it did. So he's batting 50% for 2019.

This movie is dumb.

-How could he survive collision with the asteroids? They would turn him and that puny sheet of metal into a Swiss cheese.
-Why do you need a tall antena on earth to listen to aliens, when an array of radio telescopes does all the job you need? Had they brainstormed a little more, they would have came up with a space elevator, which is an interesting concept. Actually, in the trailer I thought, "oh cool, there's going to be a space elevator." Duh.
-Why do you need to go all the way to Neptune to search for E.T.I.? You could do the same thing from Earth's orbit, with satellites such as Hubble etc. The Sun's magnetic radiation does not affect the ability to survey the universe, and even if it did, Neptune still is no way near the boundary of the heliosphere.
-A hard Sci Fi movie would not allow an interplanetary spaceship casually stop en route to Mars. You don't get to stop, because you run out of fuel.

The whole "pirates on the Moon" part is what convinced me NOT to see it. Up until I saw that spoiler on a podcast, I had been genuinely interested. That's simply stupid.

The whole notion of using moon buggys to get to the other side of the moon, knowing full well that there are pirates out there never made any sense.

Why moon buggys? Was there no other form of flying shuttle available?

It simply seemed a shoehorned action sequence to give audiences something cool to look at, and to sell the movie in the trailer.

Well, it's almost impossible these days to get a higher-budget movie made without getting action into it. Yeah, I had the same basic reaction. But, I guess that's the kind of sequence that gets the movie past financiers.

The ridiculous moon Pirate scene put me off the whole rest of the movie. It didn't even make sense to have all this advanced tech, all this industry and teraforming on the moon, but we're still driving around in dune buggies and space suits exposed to space? They have rockets that fly around like star ships. At the very least they would have some bad ass Armageddon style spacepod rollers to get around the moon in. They definitely just wanted to make a really cool space fantasy sequence. Which is exactly what happened later with the animal research vessel. This whole movie was just pages of scifi comics stitched together.

Homage to Mad Max.
And what's with the fucking Space Monkey. What a garbage fucking movie. I almost turned if off when people were free falling in zero gravity the first 5 min. Then was wondering if it was a space elevator ..why else would they have parachutes? Stupid. Made "Gravity" seem believable.

Utterly forgettable movie with drab characters. My pulse remained below 45 the entire movie.

Ever notice all these space movies have lots of pointless empty hallways? And a fucking Acoustic room on Mars with LOTS of empty hallways and safe spaces...LMFAO. Who writes this shit>?

They're always too lazy to obey the laws of physics. Takes me right out of the movie.

reply

must agree, i am still puzzled by: who are the pirates and how did they get there, why did they stay?

reply

Where did they live? Some abandoned moon rock refinery? They would have had to design their own life support systems without help from the military or government. Or maybe they are part of the moon black market underground, and were able to smuggle in enough materials to design their own habitats.

How did they support themselves? There appeared to quite a few of them. Were they stealing food from the Subway restaurant in the moon mall?

reply

all good questions

The idea is that countries are fighting for territory on the Moon because of the valuable minerals. So those pirates are say French or Russian or Chinese guerrillas attacking Americans. Or actually Americans might be intruding into their territory.

That scene certainly felt very tacked on. The film didn't need but it feels like some executive felt that there needed to be an action scene. Very strange part of the film.

reply

Looked like they were still trying to get over the air HDTV with that antenna.

reply

It was sabotaged by Comcast. At least that makes sense.

"How could he survive collision with the asteroids? They would turn him and that puny sheet of metal into a Swiss cheese."

why? they're in a geostationary orbit and so is pretty much he, meaning their relative speed is very low (only the speed he managed to create jumping off the ship and maybe utilizing his boosters)

the rings are at most 1km thick so clearing them would only take a few minutes

sorry, I don't understand your post

He’s explaining in technical terms just how dumb this film is.

reply

Yeah I really wanted to like this movie, but there were so many parts of this movie that just had me rolling my eyes also. A little disappointed for sure.

reply

I just watched it and my eyes are sore from constant eye rolling. I think I might have injured my ocular nerves. Never again.

reply

Yeah it was silly. Plus the literal hole in 1 shot to even make it to the ship in the first place. This is after finding out the main motivation for the film was naught.

Plus they could have relayed a message from Earth to Mars to Neptune not requiring travel. And they could have just shot a missile to Neptune instead of a manned crew too...

Also WHY a nuke? It was 1 space station. A tiny missile would have been enough.

(Then there is the riding the nuke shockwave for propulsion home BS as well).

reply

Sounds like typical brain dead science fiction. Things in space are traveling at such high speed that you cannot defend with a shield. If it hits you you are dead. Among other things. I saw the previews to this and I wonder why they keep making just stupid movies like this? It explains why it came and went so fast.

reply

The speed impact of him hitting his ship would have destroyed his legs, and killed him instantly. That scene was retarded.

reply

Yeah I am with ya. A few of those moments.

reply

That had to be some of the cheesiest BS I've seen in a movie this year.

Even if you could see your ship, not have to worry about debris in the way, and have the means to propel yourself, the odds of hitting a target in space from that distance would be the equivalent of getting struck by lightening.

Add factors like small belt rocks, a "tin-foil" shield to protect you, a correct angle of jump from a rotating....whatever it was, now you're talking about getting struck by lightening on a clear day.
