whod have ever thought a sequel trilogy would be as controversial/reviled as the Prequels!

The PT spilt everyone down the middle (maybe not so much ROTS but that too had its critics with Padme's death, 'NOOOOO!!' etc. Obviously TPM was the big one for controversy and then AOTC had a fair bit too). Now the dream like mythical still can't believe they actually did them ST has unbelievably done the same! (TFA less so but that wasn't exactly without its critics. and hasn't exactly got much in the way of rewatchabilty. TLJ is undoubtedly the biggie in te controversy stakes. and ROTS is getting some for ignoring/overwriting TLJ, Palatines return etc)..

Then again ROTJ managed to do it back in 83.. (ewoks, remake of ANH/another deathstar)

So really there hasn't been a bone fide universally loved truly awesome classic SW film since the ESB in 1980! (and at the time even that too had its critics for its darkness.. at least until a few years later when everyone realised just how much of a masterpiece it was)

So its the almost the same as the likes of Terminator, Alien, Superman - where there hasn't been a truly great universally loved entry since the 2nd film in the series (and coming after the 1st instant classic movie) despite all the numerous entries since, that have been met with 'uhhh..meh. maybe they'll get it right next time' (by contrast Star Trek has been consistently hit and miss with its film entries )

The prequels were mostly bad, but they were still Star Wars. The sequel trilogy is not even Star Wars.

reply

That is how I felt too. Nothing seemed like Star Wars in the trilogy. The funny thing is though, The Last Jedi seemed the most like Star Wars to me(I am a fan since the beginning when I was a kid)so I am confused how people hated that one but loved this one since it never felt like a Star Wars movie to me. Who knows?

reply

I hated TLJ but at least it didn't go overboard with new Force powers like TROS did. What Rey was able to do in TLJ was in line with her abilities as established in TFA.

reply

This is what REALLY drives me up the wall about Star Wars fans who love the OT the most (and even then not all of it), they seem to expect Star Wars to be on a pedestal above ALL other movies, both singles and franchises, and that they should strive for NOTHING but PERFECTION... or ELSE.

Well, FACE IT, hardcore Star Wars fans, ALL movie series have their ups and downs, their classic movies and their awful movies, and STAR WARS IS NO EXCEPTION. DEAL with it!

reply

You're an idiot. Make classics or don't make new SW at all! Stop dumbing it down for the Tide pod eating generation.

reply

No-one can guarantee that the movies they make will be highly-regarded. Like the OT, Lord of the Rings was also highly-regarded, but the Hobbit that followed was bloody awful.

reply

True, there isn't a guarantee they will be highly regarded, but Disney hasn't even tried to make a SW movie that could be highly regarded yet. But when it's animation like "Frozen," they somehow manage to put in some time and effort.

reply

I fully agree with that assessment, they didn't try and just wanted to make a quick buck using the Star Wars name. Truly disgraceful.

You nailed it.

reply

You watched that garbage and say it wasn't disrespectful to the source material? Are you blind?

reply

Who?

Anyone familiar with the hardcore fans. They hate everything that isnt the original trilogy, and LOVE a chance to complain and hate. In was true in 1999, and it's true now.

reply

Absolutely. The creators of the sequel trilogy had to balance between the hardcore fans that don't want anything different but the original Star Wars and the ons wo say please make something new. So the trilogry is a compromise trilogy...We cant blame them for the makers that they tried to please the majority.

reply

I did, I called it back in 2012 that this would be a horrible idea. When 2015 rolled around no one would listen to me but now it seems that I was right the whole time.

reply

OT is Star Wars, 2 Great, 1 Good

PT is Star Wars, 1 meh, 1 crappy, 1 Okay, but still Star Wars.

DT is very big-budget fan-fiction, 1 meh, 2 shit, not real Star Wars

There is no comparison, really.

Rogue One was great though.

reply

In comparison to the new trilogy yes

reply

Just as a Star Wars film in general it was brilliant, easily the best of the Disney canon and one of the best Star Wars films period.
