whod have ever thought a sequel trilogy would be as controversial/reviled as the Prequels!
The PT spilt everyone down the middle (maybe not so much ROTS but that too had its critics with Padme's death, 'NOOOOO!!' etc. Obviously TPM was the big one for controversy and then AOTC had a fair bit too). Now the dream like mythical still can't believe they actually did them ST has unbelievably done the same! (TFA less so but that wasn't exactly without its critics. and hasn't exactly got much in the way of rewatchabilty. TLJ is undoubtedly the biggie in te controversy stakes. and ROTS is getting some for ignoring/overwriting TLJ, Palatines return etc)..
Then again ROTJ managed to do it back in 83.. (ewoks, remake of ANH/another deathstar)
So really there hasn't been a bone fide universally loved truly awesome classic SW film since the ESB in 1980! (and at the time even that too had its critics for its darkness.. at least until a few years later when everyone realised just how much of a masterpiece it was)
So its the almost the same as the likes of Terminator, Alien, Superman - where there hasn't been a truly great universally loved entry since the 2nd film in the series (and coming after the 1st instant classic movie) despite all the numerous entries since, that have been met with 'uhhh..meh. maybe they'll get it right next time' (by contrast Star Trek has been consistently hit and miss with its film entries )
