For those of you that have seen the movie?
What would you give it on a scale of 1-10 and why?
share7.5. I absolutely loved this movie. Had a total blast. But I still rank it behind 1-3. Ponied up for the IMAX and this was just a visual feast of space stuff. Thought it was far, far better than it had any right to be. Was quite surprised by a good chunk of it. But i gotta knock off .5 for some unnecessary callbacks. I didn't mind the nods along the way, but toward the end we're just full on aping stuff. And the movie was good enough it simply didn't need that stuff. I really appreciate how they worked the young cast into the story. Actually felt like a proper cyberpunk crew of misfits that would band together. Truly had a great time. This was so much better than Twisters.
shareAgreed. I made the mistake of watching Twisters after this and it was so boring in comparison.
shareNice Review sounds like you really liked it. Seems like you enjoyed it more than rating that you gave.

⦁ Used old-school tech that very much fit into the 1979 Alien movie
⦁ Great special effects, no fake looking CGI (except 1 below)
⦁ Perfectly captured the tone, look and feel of Alien 1 (ship close quarters, chest bursting, face huggers) while also integrating elements from 2 (action/guns), 4 (baby) and Prometheus (bioweapon/pregnancy)
⦁ Great twists and turns, especially at the end
⦁ The robot guy was awesome - loved the duality of both a gentle/slow/retarded version and the cunning/fast/sharp version
⦁ Great pacing and mix of action and slow, terrifying scenes (baby being born, face hugger attack in room, etc)
⦁ Cool use of tech/new ideas (robot rebooting/chip, gravity, auto-aim gun, etc)
⦁ See how the miners live and how the company treats them
⦁ Great cinematography
-
⦁ Rook (1979 Synthetic) deaging/CGI tech horrible at first
⦁ The get away from her you b**** felt VERY FORCED
⦁ Much of the cast was forgettable
3/10
shareSoft 5/10 from me.
Romulus has its moments, but they’re few and far between. The characters are empty vessels and the script is designed to elicit jump scares rather than tell a story.
The visuals are great but that’s about the only thing that works imo.
Remember how in Alien, we’re just observing the crew in their natural environment, and somehow you connect with Brett or Parker simply because their authentic selves pull you in, that’s not the case in Romulus, we get some sad-sack travesty of a story, right from the jump and that’s the lure that’s supposed to connect you with our protagonist, it’s boring and insulting and lazily written.
I would rate 7/10 for it's thrills, cinematography, art direction, concepts (Ring Planet), acting by David Jonsson, body horror.
Whereas it had cliches like that of a character who turns against his fellow friends after getting controlled by the bad guy and then snaps out at the end to fight back the bad guy (Toy Story 3, The Avengers, IJ & the Temple of the Doom etc.), typical Elevator shaft & ladder chase (Hollow Man, Alien: Resurrection).
Whereas also had some 'not so good' areas such as out of the way rapid & quick growth of Aliens especially the hybrid baby which grew into a 10 ft. giant within not more than 5 minutes. Rook, 'the know it all' convenient contrivance character introduced by the writers just to have things which they wanted.
At the end of the day, in one line....this is a sophisticated version of Alien: Resurrection
I would say it’s a more accessible version of Alien: Resurrection, which is another way of saying it’s nothing more
than a soon to be forgotten, radio friendly one hit wonder of a film, imo of course.
6/10...I MIGHT BE BEING GENEROUS...I FOUND IT BORING AND UNNECESSARY.
shareIt's easily the third best movie in the Alien universe. But it's still just a 7/10 at best. I rate Alien a 10/10 and Aliens a 9/10, generously.
The biggest problems for me are:
- The Drone seems underpowered somehow, not like a threat as it did in Alien
- Same sort of thing with the Facehuggers. In Aliens, just 2 were something you could barely survive with the help of your team mates. In here, the have never seen them before and automatically know what to do. And only token infections happen.
- The story itself is okay, but in the sense "I didn't leave pissed off because the story was bad". It does not have the "Goddamn, this was a great story! Can't wait to share and talk about it!"
- The last section felt really tacked on, and totally unnecessary. Even worse, it felt like: If they did cut it off, the movie would be very underwhelming story-wise. But with it, it felt like two different movies/scripts combined with some skill (it wasn't a total disaster - but hardly something that felt designed), but with a total lack of planning and time.
- A large part - too large! - was just like a reboot of the first two movies, combined into one. The oneliners from the original movies were nearly cringe. The best part was the Save station from Alien Isolation, and only because it was just a "cameo", not a trailer thing to show that "wowowo this is the thing from the first movie!"
So overall, it's only a decent movie in the series because aside from the first two, the other movies are total suck.
The main problem is, this doesn't have anything of its own. Everything in it has been seen before in the Alien universe. And what it does is not well-enough written to be good out of sheer quality.
From your review seems like you were is leaning towards giving it a 6/10 rather than a 7/10 ,but its was an interesting review though.
share4/10
Bland cast , no suspense, disbelief suspendied a mile up for the duration. But the set designs looked great. The director obviously worships Alien 1979
