So shocking it flopped...NOT! It's free on the Internet....

This wasn't a remake/reboot/sequel anyone ever asked for.

It's free and not some one adware scary website...but Peacock (NBC/Universal).

It's right here:

Nothing wrong with that! lol

reply

Pinch your tongue between your thumb and forefinger and say "I was born on a pirate ship"! Do it. It's neato!

reply

Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

reply

It's not even a pirate site, it's the official streaming service for Universal films.

Has anyone ever asked for a reboot or remake? Sequels, yes, sometimes. But never remakes and reboots.

$12 million budget and $5.9 million at box office. In the old days it probably would have recouped it's money on video rentals but not anymore.

reply

The DVD and Blu-Ray markets are definitely lesser than back in the VHS rental boom of the 80s.

I do wonder how successful films are on digital V.O.D. (stuff like Amazon prime). I've never really researched it, but I do wonder if the studios are genuinely raking in tens or even hundreds of millions from it...I doubt it but who knows. That's how it's going now though, people are forgoing physical media in favor for streaming/digital. There's no going back.

reply

I still buy movies on physical formats and I encourage others to do so as well. I started with VHS, then moved on to DVD, then Blu-Ray, and now 4K Blu-Ray. I think that physical ownership is still the way to go if it's a movie you actually care about.

I also still rent DVDs from Redbox.

I wouldn't mind seeing a GOOD adaptation that had some real money underneath it and real talent behind the camera.

The book is damn good and it could be turned into a good movie but instead of doing that they just wasted this opportunity by making a very mediocre film.

reply

I feel like they really didn't care about what they were making. I know I didn't care about any of the characters and especially the main character I just didn't feel like I should be cheering for. I actually didn't like anyone in the film at all. Even the old man who gives them a ride, he starts off sympathetic than it's like he is hiding his wife away or so it appeared to me and so he becomes unlikable as well. Come to think of it, what happened to that woman once everyone was killed around the house?

A depressing movie!

reply

It definitely feels like they were just churning something out for a small amount of money to cash in on Stephen King's name. The only thing that felt inspired was the John Carpenter soundtrack. I'm surprised that Jason Blum was involved because he usually puts out a better product than this.

You make a point about none of the characters being particularly sympathetic or likable. I hadn't really thought of it like that, but you're right.

reply

I liked the soundtrack. It reminded me of better days film wise. I don't know if there is any technical terms for it but back in the 80's they could make a horror film and yet still keep it light entertainment. Now they make horror and they want to send you into a deep depression or worse, bore you senseless!

Never? The original version of "The Last House on the Left" desperately needed a remake to fix its glaring flaws and got it with the excellent 2009 film.

reply

Yeah, THAT was a great remake. Took a good idea that wasn't really executed very well, and improved on virtually every level.

reply

Well said.

Sometimes remakes/reboots are asked for and needed. Sometimes a dated classic simply needs done again with improved filmmaking technology, etc.

“It’s” = “it is.”

reply

Unfortunately it was merely just OK, Ephron was pretty good but the little girl was just mediocre…

Drew Barrymore was way better.

reply

I do wonder if she was being directed to act in an unlikable/cold manner. Not sure how much you can direct a child actor of that age or how much of it was just poor acting.

reply

Does it have another cool Tangerine Dream-like synth soundtrack or some forgettable stuff?

reply

I think I read somewhere that John Carpenter did the music for this flick.

reply

Tangerine Dream epitomizes forgettable.

reply

Universal knew this was shit so they just dumped it on Peacock the same day as theaters. It should've just gone to Peacock and skipped theaters it's so awful.

reply

It's a beat to death concept. King was on to something 40 years ago. But the super powered angry girl is out of gas. It only works now as the addition to a scifi show.
