“But while it clearly aims for Raiders Of The Lost Ark — “When did you decide to become Indiana Jones?” someone says at one point, while our heroes’ trek is depicted by a red dotted line on a map, Indy-style — it lands somewhere around National Treasure 2 instead.”

Sounds about what I expected. I don’t think there’s been a great adventure movie made since the first Pirates of the Caribbean over 20 years ago and before that probably The Mummy (1999)

reply

No great adventure movie in 20 years?

Interstellar?

reply

Is it really an adventure when the characters never smile and the director is a nihilist? I thought adventures we’re supposed to be fun with a few jokes being cracked. Think of movies like “Congo”.

reply

I love Interstellar but it's definitely more a thought-provoking sci-fi movie than it is a fun adventure movie.

Jungle Cruise and National Treasure are all okay but they just offer little return value for me whereas I'm still rewatching The Mummy and the first Pirates of the Caribbean.

reply

Why adventure has to be fun?

The main reason people love adventure is possible danger.

reply

No man, it's because the movies are fun and provide an escapist respite from the drudgery of everyday life.

reply

The first National Treasure is pretty damn good. Great cast, fun adventure, and even a little legitimate history thrown in along the way.

reply

I actually just watched National Treasure again last night for the first time since it came out and had a lot of fun watching it. It's certainly no Indiana Jones trilogy or The Mummy but it's a fun ride.

reply

I think that's a fair summary (though I'd say that National Treasure is easily superior to either of the Mummy sequels).

If Indy and The Mummy are A-level the National Treasure is B-level, but that's still very respectable and puts it well ahead of most other examples in its genre. It's a shame the second film couldn't live up to the first.

reply

Interstellar adventure?

HAHAHAHA

reply

Right?
Ridiculous statement.

reply

Can't say I'm interested in this anyway but it's interesting how people identify "... depicted by a red dotted line on a map ..." as something from Indiana Jones whereas I immediately think Casablanca and the film series of that era - which Indiana Jones was to some extent deliberately referencing.

reply

But.... National Treasure 2 was awesome. I'm confused.

reply

The first was one great but the sequel was disappointing.

reply

Sahara 2005 was pretty good.

reply

That means it's worth seeing since I liked National Treasure franchise, Indy franchise (first 3), and Mummy franchise (first 2).

reply

I like movies like this. A return to fun/adventure movies like Romancing the Stone.
I think The Lost City (Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock) looks like it could be fun as well.

reply

I really enjoyed Jumanji 2 and 3 (2 more than 3) and I think It's a good adventure flick!!!
