Did it feel cringy in some places, campy, and overly cheezy to you?

It had some decent moments and some decent jokes but it felt more geared towards children and young teens than teens to young adults. Taika Waititi went off the rails with this one imo than compared to Ragnarok (which I thoroughly enjoyed).

The villain Gorr felt bland if not dismal compared to Hela and Surtr, not to forget that he needs to keep plunging his Necrosword in order to call upon the shadows which is slow in itself. So the sword is only a god slayer but not a godly weapon breaker? The fact that Mjolnir could shatter it into dust is disappointing.

I guess some may find the woke parts with Valkyrie and Korg gaying it up in the bar while Jane and Thor kiss outside with Stormbreaker watching on in contempt. Yeah, that whole bit on the relationship with their weapons was amusing to some degree but later felt dragged on with Stormbreaker going through some PMS phase. Speaking of which, now that Jane is in Valhalla, does Mjolnir return to Thor now or is it shattered once more?

One cringy part (there were others) were the kids easily kicking shadow monster butt with their little Asgardian charged weapons was a bit much for me although I did find it funny when the kid with the super charged bunny rabbit was blasting away Doom-style.

Another was the goats. Yes, it was funny at the beginning but god damn did it get annoying hearing them again and again as if pushing a overstretched joke (similar to what Family Guy does) around like a dead horse.

I expected more from Zeus's thunderbolt. Felt underpowered and underwhelming. You'd think it'd be more flash or have equal play style seeing that it can break apart into two but we didn't get to see much of it. Maybe we'll see it in the next movie with Hercules as the main antagonist.

reply

Yes and it always looked like it was going to be - pretty sure it's meant to be that way.

reply

It’s weird that the current defense of this movie seems to be “it’s supposed to be terrible”.

reply

And criticism from people who, for reasons unknown, thought it WASN'T going to be a Waititi style movie lol 🤦🏿‍♂️

reply

I haven’t seen it yet so I don't know if it’s bad or good. I’m just remarking on the defense essentially boiling down to a weird admission that it isn’t good.

reply

It's not as good as Ragnarok if you liked that.

Expect sillyness if you do watch it.

reply

Ragnarok was the perfect balance of humor and seriousness. Love and Thunder goes way over the edge and is just dumb in many spots.

You didn't watch to the end? Thor is back using Mjolnir, while Stormbreaker is used by Gorr's daughter (or should I say, Gorrdóttir.)

reply

Ah, right. For some reason I forgot that part as I was writing this, lol.

reply

Felt that way everywhere except with Bale’s performance. It’s like he was acting in a totally different— and better — movie and story.

My guy acted his heart out, that's what being a professional means.

reply

Agreed. Bale was good, even though sympathetic villains get boring.

reply

Not to me.

Loved it and I’m planning on going again to see it in the cinema.

Second best film of the summer after Top Gun: Maverick. This was funny and had a lot of emotional depth. Taika Waititi is one of my favourite writers/directors working at the moment.

reply

Sure, it felt cringy, campy, and cheezy lots of times and it was awesome! It was also sad and emotional. It's another excellent chapter in the MCU and my second favorite bit (behind Shang Chi) of the current phase. I saw it Thursday evening and again this afternoon.

There's apparently a lot of unused scenes and I bet they'll do an extended length re-release like the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home re-release.

And the movie answers your question about the status of the hammer.

reply

Campy and cheezy could be awesome, but the cringy parts are just pure cringe.

reply

but the cringy parts are just pure cringe.

OOOH...THAT'S EMBARRASSING.😐

reply

Yes. It reminded me of Age of Ultron where they tried way too hard to be funny and kept cracking jokes every minute.

reply

That shit with Ultron cracking jokes pissed me off so hard, especially in comparion to what was promised in the trailer. I wanted an emotionless, unhinged and genocidal Ultron and not the shit that we got.

reply

Ugh, that totally killed me too. Fantastic trailer too...

reply

True.
Age of Ultron has an amazing trailer.
Thor Love and Thunder also had a great trailer.

Disappointing.

reply

I sort of made my peace with funny Ultron cause he's like Tony Stark's diary come to life. But it's still annoying.

reply

I largely agree with your take — too campy and silly. However, I liked Bale’s portrayal of Gorr more than you did.

reply

In my opinion, this wasn't as bad as Ragnarok was when it came to the over use of cringe humor.
