Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

And it's obvious this OP is smokin' CRACK! Christian Bale is a GREAT actor and his performance in The Fighter was amazing!

reply

If you only knew how spot on he was the real Dick Eklund you would be shocked. Quite amazing really.

I don't even care that he didn't like the performance. That's fine and his right. But if you have seen even 30 seconds of Dickie, you know his portrayal of Dickie is pretty spot on.

wow op, you must be absolutely retarded to think that this was an actor giving a "self-conscious performance" whatever the *beep* that means.......christian bale was portraying dicky eklund, a former boxer and crackhead from lowell mass. my hometown. all the actors and actresses brought perfect authenticity to their roles, and all played living people. Bale studied dicky's every move. I watched the making of this and the ward/eklund family were on set for the entirety of the movie. Bale's performance was so spot on that they often mistook him for their actual brother a couple of times. The officer Mickey O'Keefe played himself and said it was so easy to act in the movie cuz he would often have terrible deja vu while interacting with bale on set. In conclusion, you are an idiot, and may god have mercy on your retarded soul.

A friend asked me to come comment on this and I don't know half these movies you're talking about, but I've spent time with Dicky and Mick plenty of times in my life and the Bale guy even made me forget it wasn't Dicky up there.

He didn't have Dicky's nervous ticks, but he was spot on. Wahlberg was pretty good as Mick too, but not as good.

So, that's an opinion from a guy that knows them both a little bit.

I've always thought Bale was a bit overrated, but I actually thought he was pretty damn good in this movie. I mean, go watch interviews of the real Dicky Eklund.. Bale's character of him was spot on, so I don't know what you're talking about.

I guess by now, everyone has told you how ridiculous your comment is. In addition, Bale won best supporting actor for this role. With all that said, all you have to do is watch the credits at the end where the two REAL brothers are talking to the camera, Bale was IDENTICAL to the real character, kind scary to see someone thats that good of an actor huh? Well, not only that, he had actual family members move into his home so he could learn their characteristics. The guy is a role model for great actors. Sorry, if I could make your profile invisible to any more movie comments I would. Total ignorance man...

Just doing it one movie at a time.

The Ward/ Ecklund brothers lived for some time in Mark's house and CB came too. There they trained and spent time together.

Mission accomplished

He received the SAG for best supporting actor (and many others in the same category)....why do you think he was chosen unanimously amongst a league brilliant actors.....was it his year??

reply

I absolutely agree with the original poster.

Most of the populace observe the obvious and think it genius.

I am convinced that some of the people that say Bale's a bad actor are actually haters. You know you just can't see the good in someone once you dislike him/her.

reply

Im not a big fan of Bale but he was amaing in this movie.
