Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

Has the TS seen actual footage of Dickie? Bale was superb, you're in the minority but your opinion is wrong its just a bad one.

Did you think that maybe when he was looking at or winking at the camera, it was because he was playing the part of a crack head who didn't realize the documentary they were filming wasn't being filmed so he could look good on camera? After the documentary is done, you don't see him doing that. The same thing went for the girls who were his sisters and his mother, they were playing it up for the documentary, too. I thought he did a great job. The character was loud, self-conscious, and distracting all the attention toward himself as a former semi-successful fighter turned addict.

The character in The Fighter was meant to be loud, senf-conciuos and distracting. That was the point. And Bale delivered, for you aswell it seems. Bale has been perfect in every movie he was in, and he deserved an Oscar way before the Fighter.

I was actually very impressed by his performance, he really transformed himself. It was even more remarkable when I saw the footage at the end of the real Dicky and he had the exact same mannerisms and speech that Bale portrayed in the movie.

WOW. This thread won't die because you called an amazing actor a really bad one.

The defining characteristic, to me, of a good actor is being able to play different roles and seem like completely different people. For example: I like Bruce Willis, but he's pretty much always playing Bruce Willis in his movies. Christian Bale, on the other other, is amazingly different in, say, American Psycho than he is in, well, just about any other movie. Look at him in equilibrium versus The Machinist. He did indeed steal the show in The Fighter, but I think that was intended.

He is pretty amazing, so in any context, you saying he is a bad actor just sounds ludicrous.

I think you must just not like Christian Bale.

Well Vulpix, just exactly how did you want Bale to act in this role? I have worked with drug addicts in the past in my line of work, and many put on this bravado and "self-conscious" act to hide the fear and anger that is inside them. They're also constantly moving....in motion....like live wires. Bale NAILED this.

Sorry his performance was too "busy" for you. It was basically perfection.

I thought Bale was also incredibly convincing because of what he was able to project and suggest about his character.

First of all, his physical transformation and shocking weight loss is remarkable in and of itself. Then add to it his tremendous performance, accent, and his insecurities and you have an acting role for the ages.

Of course, film is so subjective and everyone's entitled to their opinion.

But I don't think he won the Oscar for nothing, eh?
