Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

I didn't like him either but to fair when we're introduced to him - he is winking to camera - he thinks they're filming a documentary on his come back.

And Mifune is great at playing angry. But he was way over the top in Throne of Blood. Much better in High and Low or Red Beard.

Did the OP not see the slice of documentary film under the end credits showing the real Dickie? Bale's performance was flawless because he was indistinguishable from the real Dickie; if you're playing a crazy, unbalanced individual then you play them as crazy and unbalanced: Acting 101.

Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Distracting??? You mean complete scene stealer in the movie. You're crazy! Bale made this movie and stole it! Oscar well deserved! I bet you wanted Shaquille O'Neal to get an Oscar Nomination for Kazaam! Pssshh ROLLS EYES

@vulpix:

The thing is, I think people LIKE loud, over the top performances. Most of the time they confuse yelling and screaming with good acting. People like performances like Jack Nicholson,Nicolas Cage,Late-period Pacino and currently Leonardo Di Caprio. People just have a habit of confusing it with 'Good Acting' and generally subtelty goes mostly ignored, which is a shame beacause it's a really tough nut to crack.

If you want to watch a masterpiece of a sublte performance, watch Martin Landau in 'Crimes and Misdemeanours'. His work in that smokes every performance nominated this year and it's not even his best performance. Viggo Mortensen in 'A History of Violence' is also stunning.

I really want Christian Bale to win the Oscar. There's NO denying his dedication but I also think that he Overplayed his character to the point where you could see him 'acting'.

Also, Toshiro Mifune was a powerhouse thespian with alarming intensity and almost a theatrical style of acting. His expressions and reactions were STUNNING ,to say the least. People calling him over-the-top are crazy. He was nothing but subtle....in being very loud.

Bale is most definitely a distractingly bad actor. I thought that he was good in Empire of the Sun, when he was what...twelve? He and DiCapri-eh are pretty boys whose good looks sell tickets. Much like Redford and Beatty in the seventies.

Sorry Vulpix you read the movie wrong, badly wrong,
I think Bale could play God quite convincingly at the moment, makeup is gonna be a bugger though.

It's only a movie, it's only a show.

I really can't understand how anyone can call bale a bad actor. But saying that, i have seen a trend lately, and that trend is when an actor comes along who gets praised, and really gets into his ascting, you will get a few, that start saying he is a crap actor. It happened to day lewis.

These people i think know nthing about acting, and they just like to call a highly praised actor a bad actor. It is sad yes because anyone who has a slight interest in movies should be able to see that bale is a very good actor.
