Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

Any of you expressing negative attitudes towards Bale's acting in this film needs to get familiar with who Dickie Eklund really is. Watch him in an interview for a minute or read about him. The cast has stated MULTIPLE times that they actually had to turn Dickie's character down a few notches because that's just how the guy is. You think Christian Bale is so pompous that he will hang out with a guy for 6 months straight and pick up on his mannerisms then decide "you know what, I think that I'm just gonna do this for an Oscar." absolutely not. Christian respects Dickey and wanted to give an accurate portrayal and try to show him in as positive as a light as possible with the material he was given.

Bale was great in this movie and deserves the oscar.

lol, this got to bea joke of the day , hah ! otherwise you are the one who acts crackhead better

So you would ratherhis eye catching performance be more subtle? The reason it's distracting is because it's so much better than everyone else on the screen with him. It would be that subtle performance you wish you saw if he wasn't better than everyone else. What you'reaaying kind of contradicts itself.

see you later

C'mon this must be a joke. Bale stole the whole show. The quality of the movie decreased every time he was off screen.

I saw this film tonight and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's great to see Christian Bale finally back on form. The last role of his with which I was very impressed was "Batman Begins". I thought he was overshadowed by Heath Ledger in the sequel and the films he had done just before and since were not engaging and I think were disappointing. Compare his performance in "The Fighter" to the one in "The Dark Knight" and simply the difference in intensity between the two roles is incredible. The good thing about Bale is when he's seriously interested by a role he will invest himself wholeheartedly into that role. Whether it be through some physical transformation or changes in his mannerisms, voice etc. I think it must be the case that in recent times he simply was not stimulated enough by the material to give an arresting performance.

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?

His CHARACTER was loud, self-conscious and totally distracting. His whole ethos was "look at meeeeee!!" For Bale to play the role in a subtle way would be dramatic malpractice.

I stated earlier in this thread that my problem was not with the loud character. I've edited my original post to clarify this.
