Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy

Does anyone want to review a script I wrote titled "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy"?

Here's the plot...
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy"
Length: 120 Pages
Tagline: Fear has a chain reaction…
Plot: The year is 1971. The Vietnam War is starting to slowly come to a close. But on the homeland, strange things are happening, and people are disappearing around the areas of Travis County, Texas. There, six buddies going on one last camping trip for the sake of old memories are lured into Sheriff Hoyt and Thomas Hewitt’s clutches. A terrifying fight for survival ensues that eventually leads to one of the most shocking, depraved, and chilling endings in cinematic history. Can you handle the legacy of fear?
The Skinny: There is some violence (but its not overdone) and all the Hewitt family members are in it (including Henrietta and Jedadiah, where it explains their origins) and there is also a new family member named Edwin (in respect to Edwin Niel, who played the Hitchhiker brother in the original). Also, don't think you know the ending just because its a prequel...

So far over 300 IMDb users have asked to read the script and have had it sent to them!

Here's my review:

Your writing skills are very great, just by reading your script we can tell you have passion for writing. The way you develop the characters is beautiful. I actually felt sympathy when the characters died. Which is what I liked. The torture scenes were also very cool. Your dialouge is also pretty sweet also. This would actually make a decent film. But sometimes it gets really boring. Like Zeke is always being saved and saved. It kind of made it..stupid. Your death scenes are awesome. It gets really boring after a while, try to add in some oringal stuff. Like there was a lot of stuff from The Beginning that just made it seem like it was The Beginning and The Remake mixed together. If you were going for that then good. But it was boring.

CrimReaper13,

I'm really excited that you want to read my scripts but unfortunately the only ones I can currently send over the Internet are "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy", "Friday the 13th: The Homecoming", "The Hills Have Eyes II", and "Madman" because they are all based off other movies characters and are not my own original writing so by copyright laws I do not own any of the characters and do not have to worry about piracy. Unfortunately until I have them copyrighted I cannot post "The Family in the Hills", "Family Feud: The Family in the Hills 2", "Family Reunion: The Family in the Hills III", "April Fool's Day", "The Hook", "Hush Little Baby", "Dust", "Surgical", or "Living Nightmare" because those characters are all created by myself and I would need to own them before sharing the story.

But when I do get them copyrighted I will definately create a website full of information for every script with reviews, character biographies, neat facts, plots, posters, and links.

Ok I just read the script. It was awesome!!! I read it in one sit-in which is really rare for me to do. It kept my interest. As a script writer myself, I think you had great character development and you were very descriptive in your writing while not writing in too much useless detail. Very nice work! The ending was a nice change as well. I was actually nervous for the characters while reading it and I highly enjoyed it.

I emailed you also with some additional comments. SEND IT TO NEW LINE!!!

reply

I wish I could send it to New Line but unfortunately they will not look at any unsolicited scripts so there isn't really a point in trying. I'm glad everyone's enjoying it though!

Unsolicited means that they did not ask to see the script so they will not look at any scripts that they did not personally ask for (that way they won't face law suits and such). I'm really glad you like it enough to see it as a movie. Maybe some kind of massive demanding among fans could get it made into a movie, but who knows...

Here is another review (and very good with few spoilers)

Hey bud, you sent me your TCM script... overall
i was impressed, you did an awesome job of building characters and built
some pretty badass one's...here's what i thought:

Critics:
1. The dialogue between some of the characters (dan and Justin especially) is way to sappy. When they talk about how much they care about each other and back each other up, it's a bit too mushy, these guys are war veterans talking like chicks.
2. I understand your name is Zeke? well from one screenwriter to another, using your own first name in your script isn't the greatest idea (just my opinion)
3. The character of Hoyt is just a little off. In the story, when he is tormenting victims, he refers to Thomas alot which he really never does in the other films. He never uses the word chainsaw either. I know somebody else already mentioned that the "i don't take pleasure in Killin", doesnt work for hoyt, great line, just not for him.
4. If you dropped a character it wouldn't hurt (Sean or chris seem to be like the two expendable ones, maybe make them one character)
5. Aids was still pretty unknown in the 70's, it didn't become common knowledge until the 80's

Good Stuff:
1. Awesome characters dude, can't say that enough, you did an awesome job of building up their personalities
2. Awesome back story with the hippie's and veterans, I loved how Taylor came to appreciate a soldier's attitude when they saved him...(my favorite part of your script)
3. Great job of bringing jebediah and henrietta into the story, worked great
4. Cool ending, you might be able to throw some more juice on it, but pretty sweet
5. I thought, when i started reading it, that having no females would be bad, but it worked out ten times better...If i ever start something like this I'm not using female leads...
6. Edwin's death was an awesome sequence.
7. Justin's death was great
8. Awesome dinner sequence, way to get back to through roots of TCM

Advice (just as a spectator):
1. I think if you put your mind to it, you could come up with a better ending
2. I think you could come up with a better title maybe, it is a prequel so I don't know how legacy would sound
3. I'd think of something a little better than the rats with Zeke, it kind
of sways from the historical tone of the TCM's...
4. You did a good job with this, but since the "beginning" was already a prequel to the remake, you should maybe do something with the original, if you went back to the original characters from 1974 that be great...people would love reading that

Well that's what i thought, i think you did an awesome job. Great story, great characters, a touch of comedy and even some drama. Keep writing brother, all i could say to you.

Unfortunately the only ones I am able to send at this time are "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy" and "Friday the 13th: The Homecoming". Come March 2007, "The Hills Have Eyes 3" will be finished and ready to send. All the other scripts I cannot send due to copyright laws since I do own the characters to all of those and they are not fan scripts but they have not been copyrighted yet.

If you would like "TCM:TL" or "F13:TH" I will send either, and if you want I will send "THHE3" when it is finished.

Out of the reviews I've recieved for "Texas Chainsaw Legacy" and "Friday the 13th Homecoming" I would give the following ratings...

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy" - 8.5/10
"Friday the 13th: The Homecoming" - 7/10

And here is a review for "The Hook" which I have recieved back from a judge at a screenplay contenst (he gave me permission to use his name when I post here).

“The Hook” is a Rare Catch
By Joe Biggs

When I first began reading “The Hook” I decided that it was going to be exceptionally dark, nihilistic, and disturbing for a horror screenplay. By the time I was finished reading I had discovered that it was not only that but it was a true meaningful allegory decorated with violent situations that aren’t as fabricated as the recent “Saw” movies but more subtly realistic and jolting unlike anything we have seen on the screen. It does for the modern horror movies what “Silence of the Lambs” did over 15 years ago – introduce a villain who you can sympathize with even as they torture their victims both physically and psychologically, leaving you with a dark pit in your stomach.

“The Hook” starts off different than I was expecting, and right from the stylish start you know that it’s not a campy horror or a redundant thriller, but it is something refreshing to the air breathed by Hollywood executives looking to make a quick buck. The story starts in modern times, with two detectives in the middle of a crime investigation which brings the detectives to investigate the infamous urban legend called “The Hook”, which leads them to then discover the legend’s origins. Although this story makes it seem as if a true story inspired the urban legend, nothing true ever came from it. The script digs into 1955, in a small New Jersey town called Sandy Hook where a woman runs a small inn and lives with her invalid brother and abusive boyfriend Ford. Soon enough, we are introduced to her brother Bub who has been in a mental institution since the end of World War II in 1945. So the not-so-well Bub nearly murders Ford after a violent attack.

The story then picks up with a pair of newlyweds who have run from their oppressive homes and gotten hitched, but now have no direction in life. They wind up at Sandy Hook and want to stay in the inn, where Ford is now being held captive and tortured. Soon enough a pair of thieves come to the inn and manipulates everyone inside, but the true story starts when Bub is forced to kill Ford and one of the guests sees. This sets off a chain of terrifying events where Bub, and eventually his siblings, hunts down the guests of the hotel.

The story gets intense real quick, much more intense than you would think. There is no set cliché survivor and you know that it’s not going to be a happy ending. The ending fifteen pages are the most exciting of the story and take revenge to a whole new level, which is perfect for the story. The whole entire theme of the movie is how innocence is lost to the wicked, with the script beginning with a quote by Ernest Hemmingway which states “All Things Truly Wicked Start from an Innocence.” The characters also mirror events in both the past and present wars dealing with how violence destroys lives and shatters dreams.

If you can make your way past the excessive violence and gripping suspense, than you probably would come to a whole new story within “The Hook” – one that shows that the violence depicted is not something to be copied because in the end the violence will only destroy you. Its actually a very good message being told in “The Hook”, which is unique because most horror films send out the absolute wrong message to people.

After reading about the true art involved you might be thinking that this isn’t really a horror script at all, but even though it has more style than most horror scripts it is still a story about murder, mayhem, and revenge – the basics for a horror. The violence is realistic and brutal, but I would not call it gory. In most perspectives gore is a form of violence which tries to shock and gross people out in the most obscene way possible by using chainsaws and surgical tools to dismember people. “The Hook” makes the kills quick but makes them just as effective and disturbing just without the entertainment value involved. Sane people should not enjoy the death scenes in “The Hook” because they detail the terror running through the victim and not the accomplishment felt by the killer. One scene involves a car, a rope, a person, and a tree while another scene involves falling body parts onto another person.

When reading these scripts I ask myself if I could truly and honestly see this as a movie; I could and I wish it were. While I could picture critics hating it for its violence I could also see them loving it for its messages and allegorical themes. “The Hook” is also a rare gem because it is written for a small budget, but with a script like this a lot of money could be made. If we were someday able to see “The Hook” on a big screen, I would imagine that Bub and his family could join the iconic horror characters such as Freddy and Jason, but at the same time I think that Bub would be rejected because of one huge character flaw – unlike Freddy and Jason, Bub shows human qualities, strengths, and weaknesses, and unlike other horror villains Bub allows you to enter his head, understand him, and ultimately relate to him on a person and truly horrifying level which leaves you in the ultimate terrifying experience.

Another Review (A Good SPOILERLESS Review too)

CHAIN OF GLORY: “The Legacy” will have you buzzing for a movie!

The Skinny: A must read script if you like horror movies – should be the next film.

Full Review:
In 1974 Tobe Hooper released a little horror film called “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” which would eventually blow up into being one of the most successful and popular horror films of all time. Upon its initial release, the film established one of the most gruesome stories ever told and introduced the world to Leatherface and his demented family of inbred psychopaths. Leatherface and his family would go onto murdering people, torturing them, and eating them, while using their spare parts for other needed things. It would not be for twelve years that Hooper would once again bring Leatherface to the screen, this time opposite Dennis Hopper, in the overly-campy and colorful sequel “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2”. Fans did not react well to “Chainsaw 2”, mainly due to the fact that its storyline was so different, and wanted a return to what made the classic a classic – pure terror. Neither of the following sequels, “Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III” or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation” would go onto pleasing fans either (despite the fact that they starred modern day celebrities Viggo Mortensen, Renee Zellwegger, and Matthew McConaughey. It would not be until 2003 that “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” would be a terrifying ride and not a humorous joke with the Michael Bay produced “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake, which was so successful upon its release that it even spawned a moderately successful prequel “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” in 2006. Now the time has come again to try and figure out what Leatherface and his family will be doing next, and we may have found the perfect story here.
This story is “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy”, which is an ‘interquel’ which takes place between the 2006 and 2003 versions, where all the loose ends are tied up with chilling results. We are first introduced to a group of six buddies on a camping trip. They are the stoic Dan and the traumatized Justin, both of whom have returned from Vietnam, peacekeeper Sean who is engaged and soon to married, tactless Zeke who is the youngest and heading off to college, bossy Chris who already is in college, and drug addict Taylor who’s bitter attitude towards his soldier friends is nothing more than his overwhelming fears for them. Of course, Taylor and Chris have points of view that ultimately conflict with Dan and Justin’s to create a very interesting sub-plot.
The six boys soon befriend a sick looking hitchhiker named Henrietta and her good hearted son Jedediah, but their kindness would lead them to their doom. When the group splits up, Sean, Taylor, and Chris drive Henrietta and Jedediah to a farmhouse owned by the Hewitt family, where the evil Sheriff Hoyt soon comes into play. Dan, Justin, and Zeke find themselves harassed by a local war veteran named Edwin who also happens to be a member of the Hewitt clan. Before long the story picks up, and eventually Leatherface (referred to as Thomas in the script) bursts out with his trusty chainsaw.
What makes this so different from the other “Chainsaw” films is that you really care for the characters, even more so than in the remake or “The Beginning”. Dan, Justin, Zeke, Sean, Chris, and Taylor all have character flaws but they also are humans, very well written humans. They drive the story, which doesn’t focus on the Hewitt family but simply shows the friend’s struggle for survival. It’s almost heartbreaking at times, and you really do care for the characters. One excellent scene is when one of the boys is with his friend, who is dieing near a stream. There’s also a great sense of accomplishment for the hero of the story because they too inflict pain upon their enemy, the Hewitt clan.
“The Legacy” does not succeed from excessive gore like in “The Beginning” or “Leatherface” or “Chainsaw 2”. There is certainly violence, including another pushup scene where one character must do pushups on glass to save his friend, and another character is nearly mauled by rats – however the story would be the same with implied violence. We get the dinner scene which in my opinion is the best since the original and even brings back the ‘hammer to the head over the bucket’ scenario. And the chainsaw does slice through people, into heads – you name it! But the gore does not take over the plot, the six friends do.
The writing is very good and professional, and there are creative chase scenes. For instance, a chase scene in a church is suspenseful, and we are brought through the whole town during chases, from the Old Crawford Mill to the Hewitt House to abandoned buildings to the Meat House to the rest stop, etc. The ending is even creative and very well done, leaving you with mixed feelings of victory or defeat for the characters. The story is disturbing but not in the usual “Chainsaw Massacre” way – it is not disturbing because you are grossed out but because you feel a sense of loss.
Hopefully some day we’ll be able to remember “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” movies. We’ll have Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic that started it all. There will be his follow up in 1986 titled “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” with Dennis Hopper. Viggio Mortensen will have the title for “Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III”, with Renee Zellwegger and Matthew McConoughey buzzing in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation”. Jessica Biel and R. Lee Ermey will be remembered for Michael Bay’s 2003 remake, while Ermey will also be remembered with Jordana Brewster and Matthew Bomer for the 2006 prequel “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”. And if it were up to me, I would have a group of six boys go down in history for playing Dan, Justin, Zeke, Sean, Chris, and Taylor in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy”.

My Score: 10/10

Since a lot seem to be interested in my other scripts, here's the lowdown on the horror selection...

“Alone”
Tagline - No one can save you when you’re alone…
Plot - In 1984 three of her friends were murdered in what happened to be one of the most infamous murders in New York City history. It has been over twenty years and Caitlin is still dealing with the terrifying memories. Now, as a movie detailing the events that changed her life forever gets ready for release, Caitlin is forced to relive that long weekend in 1984, where her carefree, free spirited life became one of the most tragic stories in history.

“April Fool’s Day”
Tagline - Don't let the joke be on your life!
Plot - The original film was a campy horror film which told the story of a group of college kids stranded on an island with a killer in a sort of And Then There Were None styled thriller. The remake, or re-imagining, features a small town terrorized by a killer. A reporter’s death in the town movie theater stirs up controversy surrounding two different murder cases. However the strangest thing is that a high school girl begins to notice that all the puzzle pieces lead back to her, and that she is the center of this killer’s deadly game. No one is safe and everyone is a suspect in this film that proves you don’t want to have the trick played on you on April fool’s Day; it may end your life. Like the original film, this is a mystery thriller with some light humor.

However, their new life turns out to be more dangerous than they could have expected when a missing persons case leads Colin to suspect that their new neighbors are actually kidnapping people. This proves to be terrifyingly true when Taylor and Katie find themselves being watched by someone who they believe is inside their house, and who could have dangerous plans in store.

But her recovery session soon turns to terror when a man arrives in town claiming to be Dr. Elias Voorhees, Jason’s long lost scientist father, who also claims that he has revived his son from a near death experience and nursed him back to health. But Elias also brings horrifying news with him – Jason is alive, and he’s come home. With the high school homecoming dance taking place at the newly renovated Camp Crystal Lake and Chris’ son among those attending the dance, the terror starts up and the body count continues. Will anyone be able to stop the hockey masked killer as the screen’s most maniacal mass murderer’s deadly secrets are finally revealed?

“The Hills Have Eyes II”
Tagline - That feeling you're being watched... its real.
Plot - The date is June 2006, and summer has finally arrived. For a bus full of eight military students that news couldn’t sound better. But when a distressed man crossing the road inadvertently causes their bus to crash in the middle of the desert, the military students believe that the worst has come. “The Hook” (Original Which Was Made into a Student Film)
Tagline - Get Hooked into Fear!
Plot (As on Brochure) - A young man (Miller) must save his girlfriend (Raywood) from two vicious killers (Shindel, DeCanio) who have kidnapped her with torturous plans in mind. Greta Reo steals the show as the killer’s demented invalid sister. The film has a strong political view and includes classic rock songs from Fleetwood Mac, Donovan, The Rolling Stones, Terry Reid, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Although this film is indeed a horror film, it shows little violence and should be appropriate for all teens.

I just recieved this well written and spoilerless review

Before i start i wanna say i loved it. lol. zeke was my favorite charachter.

" When i first started to read "the legacy" i was upset there was no female lead, i though ''horror movie, and no hot chicks? hells no" But as i started plunging into the script, i couldnt put it down. Thumbing threw the pages, as if they were my own fantasies, i fell in love with all of the charachters, Zeke, in particular. The way these guys were all seperated and standing on the last leg of the clique. but when the guys encounter the Family, and things get out of control. in the most horrifying haroowing way, they attempt to come together and help one another, the script left me with feeling of disgust, emotional uncontrolment, and overall sadness, it was like reading the obitchuaries of my best friends, exactly how a horror movie should be. While reading the script, i even found my self jumping at moments, which was funny, because it was simply a peice of paper, I say; "The original Texas chainsaw massacre Started the Trend, Legacy Will Perfect it."

I thought you sript was great, it would be a perfect way to end the new trilogy, all the thins from the previous movies gives the feeling of remebering before the end, the only thing I would criticize was some of the dialogue ended up being waay to cheesy, specially between Dan and Justin adn the n with Zeke, but don't get me wrong I loved the relatinship but I think you could accomplish it in a more subtle way. And by the way i loved Justin's final scene it was really touching, i liked how you introduce brotherhood and soul to what usually is a pretty plain story. You really accomplished something here, of course it could use some rewriting in some areas but the overall result was great. You have 200 replies to this point you should really find a way to push your story to be done, really if you need a petitionm or something let me know I would love to help. this is a really good story, but I read your casting choices and I strongly disagree in most of them, some of them look way too old and you can really notice a large age difference among them they don't look like childhood friends, besides any of them didn't cross my mind while reading it, this would be my recommendations if you don't mind:
Dan- Channing Tatum (Jesse Metcalfe has the acting skills of a dog and doesn't have the personality or looks you describe)
Taylor- Chris Evans (Tom Weeling, again no personlaity or actin skills or even a little charm he only has a nice face, besides i don't think the relationship would work between Metcalfe and Welling)
Zeke- Actually here is a good choice but I would go with Asthon Holmes(A history of violence) but Zac Efron could pull it off but he seems to nice and innocent to play Zeke.
Chris- Matt Lanter (looks more age appropiate with the rest of them and I pictured him as Chris since the beginning)
Sean- Julian Morris (he has the good guy looks and definitely pictured him while I was reading and again more age appropiate)
Taylor- Adam Brody (he can definitely pull the hippie look and the personality fits exceptionally)
Edwin- i couldn't think of another option here yours was great but I only have one problem, probably I'm not sure guys as old as him didn't went to the war he is a little bit too old but the looks are great.

I hope you don't get offended by this I know is your script and sometimes when you write something you picture those people but I don't think that the six guys you chose could trnsalate to screen well, i mean you put a 30 year old that looks 30 years old with a 18 year old that looks like 16 year oldand the other guys look like they're in there late 20's not early 20's. Agaian is just a reccomendation so don't take it the bad way. Again brilliant script.

Tell me what you don't like about yourself?

reply

Thanks for the review Mon19! I'm glad you enjoyed the script, and I like your casting choices. As a writer it feels nice to have your audience picture characters differently than you did in your head - it means I did my job. I really appreciate all the reviews so far, and please keep them coming.

I would love to make a movie out of this but I believe the chances are slim to none - I don't even know how I would go about it.

That is a really cool title.
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE LEGACY.
I hope they chose that for their next title.
can you e-mail me a copy of that?
I hope you take into consideration
the hitch hiker girl from the remake
b/c she did survive something.
They should definitely make one more
to tie this all up especially with Henrietta
not being in the last one.

So umm, yeah I read it. Stayed up until 2 AM to do it, but I still read it.

I liked it. I thought it was really good and suspensful and it obviousley kept me interested if I stayed up til' 2 AM because I refused to go to sleep before I finished reading it.

A few flaws for me:

Sometimes I felt like there was too much...if that makes sense. Like there was too many, "The chainsaw came crashing through the wall and almost hit his face" etc. There was too many "the chainsaw almost got me" moments for me. It got kind of repititious and happened almost everytime the boys encountered Leatherface.

Also, too many chase scenes. I will be the first to say that I LOVE chase scenes and that is one of the biggest things that makes a good horror movie/story. But I felt like there was too many that lasted too long. Zeke had like 3 chase scenes and managed to escape all of them? There was just too much of it, if you understand what I'm trying to say.

The dialogue was really good though. I thought it was very realistic and sounded like a real conversation people would be having. Maybe cut back a little on the constant "JUSTIN!", "ZEKE!", DAN! HELP ME!" moments, because that too got repititious. They all kind of just randomly shouted out eachother's names when they were in trouble and it wasn't very (and I really hate to say this word cuz I hate that stupid Macho Man crap but...) manly.

But aside from a few flaws (which every story/movie/script has anyway) it was good. Interesting. Unique. I like how you really went back to the original TCM with the Edwin character, and the meat hook, and the dinner table scene followed by the attempted bucket/hammer kill.

I liked the ending too. I hate it when they all die! So I'm glad that Dan didn't cuz he was a great character.

One question though, what exactly happened to Sean? Maybe I missed it cuz I was trying hard to stay awake, but did you ever really mention what happens to him? He gets hit in the face by Tea Lady, then goes to the rest stop, then Leatherface carries him into the house with Zeke and next thing I know Justin says he's dead. So WTF happened to him?

Sorry for the lengthy post, but overall good job. 8/10.

reply

FutureFLIM, I really liked your review. The lengthier the review the better, and I really like both your appraises and criticisism . I'm really glad you enjoyed it... and as for Sean, it is left up to the imagination.
